Is there any way someone can improve searching for this site?

I often find myself using Google to search this site.

Like offering a drop down list containing something like search Hardware/Software, current forum etc... A bit like quick searches on some sales sites like play.com or amazon.

To get the BSOD message press Windows key+break. that should bring up system properties. Then click on the Advanced tab then settings in startup and recovery. Untick automatically restart.

Whilst your in the system properties how much RAM does it say you have?

Also, can users submit tutorials and code snippets? I think we'd have a lot more tutorials if we let users write some and have them reviewed by moderators. I've seen other websites do this, and I think it'd be great if Daniweb did too!

I <3 daniweb!

Have a look at my Thread. I agree they could make tutorial submissions a lot simpler.

If all you are trying to do is transfer data I suggest using a linux live CD. You maybe able to assign the drive letter using this aswell.

Have you tried manually selecting the drive to boot from?

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Hello,

Usually when this happens to me I only unplug the modem power and Ethernet. Leaving the router on.

I suggest unplugging the router for a few mins then plug it in leave it until only the power light is on. Then reconnect the ethernet for the internet wait a minute and then plug in the rest of the cables.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Could you please provide us with a screenshot of what happens. The control panel when you click on the item and the error message.

Do you have the original XP CD and have you tried using system restore to a point before the installation of the labeling software?

Have you run a virus scanner and anti-malware ?

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

You could do with seeing what the problem is, I would connect an external monitor and see if there is any error messages.

Have I misunderstood? Does the machine sound as if it is booting up without displaying anything or is the machine not turning on at all?

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Do you have any Idea what the error is? Does it display an error and then turn off?

What OS are you using?

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Hello Markzyyy,

I suggest you read the read me's Here. You may also have better look posting this in the virus forum - you are more likely to get a better response rate.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

I would suggest re running the anti-virus and this time watch it as it scans. This will take a while so I suggest doing something else on the computer while it scans.

Also if no viruses are found you can try CCleaner and Registry Defrag.

Have you made any changes or installed an updates?

Have you tried restarting the computer to see if the error is consistant?

I've just bought an external monitor for my laptop and use an external mouse and keyboard but because of problems which may be unrelated I'm wondering whether it is okay to have the laptop closed while it is operating? It takes up much less space that way when I don't need access to the keyboard.

I agree with m54071. Don't forget to make sure the laptop isn't set to go into standby/sleep or hibernate when you close the lid.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

ok, well then how do you know if the CHKDSK passed or not? Will it tell you if there are errors somehow?

I have no idea may tell you. I would expect it to report any bad sectors though, I have heard that it reports the error in hex but there is only one way to find out. searh for that 'wininit' file it can't harm to just look at it.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

If you have made no changes to hardware configuration you don't need to worry about them. If you want you can update them one windows is reinstalled. Don't forget to update windows either and install the necessary security apps.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Hello.

Try Comodo its free for home use. This has antivirus and firewall software so you may have to replace your current one. It comes up with messages like say if your installing firefox it will say firefox.exe is trying to alter the registry allow deny.

-hope this helps

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

I think there is a log file in the event viewer called 'wininit' but I am not sure if it will be useful.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Do you know what these files are?

If you really know you don't need them you could go to the extreme of creating an extra partition moving the folder there and format that.

do you think this would work?

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

I am not too sure on what is wrong. The only thing I can suggest is testing your components perhaps check connections.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Hello.

I would have to ask how big is the room?

If the left-center-right speakers are going to be right next to each other you may as well go for 4.1.

5.1 would be better surround sound though but is better to have the speakers at equal distance away from you to have better effect.

I believe both would good enough for games. Then again if you get the 4.1 are you going to be thinking 'Hmm... I wonder if the 5.1 would have been better?'.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Is their no recovery partition on the hard drive?

A complete format of the disk should get rid of whatever is on their.

What are you trying to do a complete system restore or just a repair?

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Thinkin on it, isn't there a memory test in the GRUB at boot up?

I know mine does.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Hi deepesh911,

Honestly I am not too sure. Restoring the computer may just do a quick format.

But for the purpose you want to format, it would be acceptable. All files would be lost so back up ones you want.

- go ahead.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

I would expect the monitor to automatically adapt to resolutions in it's range.
Have you tried reducing the resolution to 800 X 600 just to test if the monitor resizes the screen to fit?

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

It doesn't seem likely. The internal interface is SATA, and I doubt there's any way to adapt it.

I agree, SATA is Serial transmission and ATA is parallel transmission you would need a converter. This would be okay for a PC but a for a laptop I don't think so.

Sorry you are going to have to buy another HDD. You can use the other hard drive in a PC though.

- SATA
- Laptop hard drive (2.5 inch)

work, yes maybe but did they perform !
download and burn iso image making a bootable disk of memtest86 and and run the test for a few hrs . get the first one in the list . Nero will burn iso's but if you need iso burning tool get free one [ http://www.freeisoburner.com/ ]
http://www.memtest86.com/download.html

Yes if you still have your ubuntu installation CD I believe this has a memory test on it before loading ubuntu up.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

My 2 cents:

Try loading the failsafe defaults in your BIOS. Maybe the optimised defaults.

Yes try this if you can, but if you can't boot up at all; even into bios clear CMOS.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Okay have you tried cleaning the printer cartridges?
The Printer software should have an option to clean the printer heads or something like that.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Have you tried to reinstall the operating system yet?

Seems to me that windows can't load because it isn't configured for your system.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Hello

Maybe you have an overheating issue if you are waiting some time before being able to turn it back on.

And this thread shouldn't be here maybe in XP forum or Virus forum.
But I am sure someone will move it

- Continue to post to this thread don't create another.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

I think if Kaspersky internet security 2009 has anti-spyware and anti-malware components then I think your computer should still be reasonably secure.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Could be a number of problems. Could you give us the specification of your system?

Have you tried pressing the power button for about 4 secs?

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Did you remove all the plastic covering from the cartridges? Take them out and check there are no bits of plastic left and make sure you don't touch any of the print nozzles.

Does the HP printer software show the ink levels?

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Yes it will show as 100% so does mine because it can hold very little charge.

I don't know how to recalibrate batteries, but I did unplug the battery leave it for a few days for it to lose some charge and it did last a little longer, but nothing worthwhile.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Hello

Do you have any other psu to test the system with?

Is there a power switch at the back of the computer?

You said has stopped functioning, was it working previously?

Have any changes to hardware been made?

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Hello

Have you recently installed any new print cartridges?
Have you not used the printer for quite some time?
Have you got the correct drivers installed?

Try printing a test page

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Is this a old laptop? My laptop about 3 years old has a dead battery, if I remove the power lead it goes of almost instantly. Batteries lose their zero point if they are constantly recharged with some charge already in it.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

How much RAM and modules do you have?

Try reseating them if that doesn't work try using one module.

you did apply thermal paste when you installed the new processor didn't you?

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Okay try this website Softpedia drivers. Apparently it is the driver for Gigabit LAN ABIT-IP35-PRO-Realtek.

Let us know how it goes.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

I have used EasyBCD many times and have never had a problem with it; I'd say is you best option.

After installing open it up goto Add/Remove entries > select type XP and then set the name of it to that what you want to see in the boot menu then select the drive XP is installed on.

Then go to Manage bootloader, Back up settings, then click reinstall vista boot loader and write MBR. Now try rebooting...

- There job done, let us know how it goes.

If you do have a network card then it will automatically assign itself ip addresses. for example 127.0.0.1 is a loop back address. An IP it not important if your not connected to a network and if you do connect to a network you will most likely be assigned one automatically.

Put simply don't worry about an IP address.

Does this help?

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

All you have to do is double click the installer and the installation should begin automatically. The biggest problem is getting the right ones, if you have them login to windows and double click on the driver download.

- Hope this helps.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Hello, have you got the option show filename extension selected?

have a look under tools > folder options >view (tab) and select the 'Hide file extension for know files'.

I suspect that when you enter the new filename it you don't include the extension, probably .mp3.

Has this helped?

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Are you sure it isn't blank or user Admin password admin. The password and user maybe on the back of the router.

You can reset the router to it's factory settings to regain access.

However it doesn't prove you connections are working.

Is your internet connection via ethernet?

Ethernet is what will be connected between your computer and the router.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

No. I install the WINDOWS 2000 whilst the the hard disk was in another PC ?

Windows was installed on a different computer. We are better off waiting a reply before suggesting ram issues.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

You can try deleting it from there.

Use DEL filename (include the path eg C:\myfolder\somefile) to delete files.

Use RMDIR foldername (include the path) to remove folders.

I think you can only delete empty folders. So try DEL foldername to delete the contents and then RMDIR foldername.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Hello I suggest trying EasyBCD. It will allow you to add the XP entry to the boot loader.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

What software are you trying to install?

Have you tried it on a different computer?

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Did you install 2000 whilst it was in this computer?

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

I think a network drive is seen as an actual hard drive by the computer. These can be used at organizations.

A network place I think is places available on the network that you can connect to.

A network folder is a folder that can be view and/or accessed across the network.

I know that a network drive can be useful if you have many users, then they can have their own space that belongs only to them.

Or a network folder could be useful at home for sharing files across the network.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Tell you what can you take a picture of the cd drive for us?

It could prove most useful.
