Hello what you need to do is reconfigure the boot priority to boot from the external dvd drive.

The first step should be getting into the BIOS. When you turn on the laptop you need to press a key like del or F10 to enter the BIOS.

Then you need to find the boot order and ensure that USB CD/DVD drive is at the top. Instructions for navigation and selection should be on the screen.

Ultimatley what you need is the BIOS configured to boot from the external drive.

- Let us know if you need any help.

If you are uncertain about anything you have done in BIOS exit without saving changes otherwise save changes and exit.

If you have a different problem in the future create a new thread.

As for your problem have you tried an external monitor?

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Hey

Thanks for the advice, I think that's what i'm gonna do.
I have spent countless, pointless hours with this wretched machine so it will be my pleasure to throw it out :)

Okay whatever you decide it maybe worthwhile keeping certain components, say the hard drive you can use it as external storage or second hard drive in another comp.

- If you don't want the hard drive format it at least before binin it.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

I don't know how to solve your problem but until you have a solution why not download GIMP and resize the image to the size you want. This should avoid the blur for now.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Could you expand a bit on your question?

Are you unable to access some site because of a program blocking them or is there parts of the site missing etc.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

You could also try removing the graphics card if it has onboard graphics.

If you motherboard has a VGA connection you should be able to boot without a dedicated graphics card.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

...I agree. Get a better graphics card. If this were an onboard Nvidia or ATI it may have work but not Intel. Get a Nvidia or ATI graphics card, you can get decent graphics cards fairly cheap.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Okay then, If you are just after running XP boot using the linux or windows CD.

Then format the entire drive delete everything ie partitions.

Then try installing windows.

This is assuming there is nothing on the drive you want to keep. If there is use your linux cd to get the data you want then format the drive.

- let us know how it goes.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

You could get a linux live CD and possibly transfer the files to an external source e.g external hard drive.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Did you try formatting via prompt?

The windows disk management should tell you the size of the drive and should be able to format from there.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Have you had linux on this computer?

If you have a linux disc try reinstalling that on a different partition that should detect windows.

I don't think the grub has been removed correctly or at all. By installing linux along side windows you maybe able to select it from the grub boot selection when it is rewritten.

A linux CD should let you view the windows partition aswell.

- Let us know how it goes.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

can you eject the CD/DVD tray whilst it is turned on?
You could try a bootable cd/dvd.

No system beeps are anything?

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Hi,

What are you after doing? upgrading or building a system from scratch?

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

How about your old hard drive does it say which type it is on that?

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Hello thomasms,

If I were you I would shrink the windows partition down a bit.

I am assuming the partitions needed are 1 ext3 and a swap one.

Shrink your windows partition by about 10 Gig in case you need more space.

Try 1GiB swap and about 8GiB for ext3.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Can you give us a full spec of your system?

Does nothing at all happen when you press the power button?

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Did the disc need to be finalised?

Have you tried DVD+R?

I would recommend getting some DVD+RW and copy them onto your PC. Then you can edit the movie cut ads etc and burn to disk after.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

I have also had this problem. With me I can't burn bootable cd's with 'phillps' brand yet can burn movies.

Have you tried lowering the burn speed?

- let us know how it goes.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Did you burn your own dvd like from here?

If you are after one particular part say Visual C++ have you tried downloading that individual component?

Has any other software failed to install?

Are you running a firewall or antivirus?

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Hello,

How old is this laptop?

When you put the battery in and plug it in does a light come on and show the battery is charging?

Does it fail to turn on when unplugged from the mains? - does a light flash or anything when trying to turn it on?

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

1. For the HP laptop does the screen not come on at all? if so try another monitor if possible.

2. For the dell does the message appear as windows is loading?

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Is there no restore partition?

Does you computer crash at a specific moment? does it fail to boot?

Please let us know what the problem is, we maybe able to fix it. You should be able to create restore disks from windows if you did not recieve one when buying it.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Try removing the graphics cards and see if the beeps persist.

let us know what happens.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Hello,

Have you tried each module individually?

Have you tried alternating the slots used?

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

You could try stopping any startup programs running that aren't needed.

Go to run and type in msconfig press enter. Untick any process that you don't want to run and select ok and restart.

- hope this helps.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Hi,

Do you have any other monitors to test the picture with this graphics card?

Have you tried lowering the resolution?

Was the one you were using before with the same monitor?

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

have you tried entering safe mode? Let us know if it is the same.

It could be corrupt files and not startup programs.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Hmm...

Okay then, Have you tried removing the small hard drive and installing XP on the bigger one?

Also try setting both hard drives to auto select or master and anything else on the same cable as slave. Then set boot priority.

Does each hard drive work separately?

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Quick question did you have both drives set as slave?

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Well if you can get both drives working I would install XP on the bigger drive and leave ME on the smaller one.

if you cable to the CD drive has a spare connection put the smaller one on that and put the bigger hard drive on another cable.

Could you tell us what you ultimately want ie, ME on 3gig drive XP on the other and dual boot etc...

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Locked up as in you can't open the cd tray?

can you enter BIOS?

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

which operating do you have? which did you have?

Is 1394 the name of your home network?
Do you know if the drivers are installed for your wireless card?

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Hi,

Have you tried increasing the resolution?

Which graphics card are you using?

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

There are no jumper settings on a sata hard drive. Just set the boot order correctly in your bios and you should be good.

Rik from RCE is right.

Each SATA drive has is own cable so there is no master or slave for that cable.

Go into BIOS and set the segate drive as the second in the boot and the other drive after it; the CD/DVD drive should be first incase you need to boot from CD/DVD.

Hope this helps.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

I suggest trying a linux live cd to see if system still works.

Or try a windows installation disc and see if it recognises the hard drive don't reinstall windows yet you will lose your data.

let us know how it goes.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

This may not solve the problem but instead of having two hard drives on one cable try putting one on the same cable of the cd/dvd drive, or have you done this?

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

There is no "good" free virus scan. You should pay for a virus scan. You have to think you spend around 600 bucks on a new computer and a virus scan is around 20-50 bucks a year that can save a computer. Its worth paying for one than have a virus eat your pc up. I use PC security shield. Its one of the best virus scans out there i got it for 20 bucks you can get it from pc security shields website or search for it on pc magazine thats how i got it for 20.

I disagree I think that there is nothing wrong with free virus scanners I have used AVG and Comodo, I have never have had a virus problem. I don't know about Avast I have never used it but many people think it is pretty good.

I you want to think about it a bit more why not download a free trial of a paid for product like norton, or mcafee. I cycled through a few trial until I decided to use a free anti-virus.

Personnaly I hate paying for software especially if their is a similar free one around.

I would say either get a free one or download a free trial for a paid version then get it if you like it.

- Hope this helps.

How much hotter?

I have just felt my screen and it is a bit hotter at the top than elsewhere- if it is a slight difference then it probably doesn't matter.

I wouldn't leave it on whilst I go out though - you never know.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Which avast are you talking about the free one or paid for?

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Is this a laptop or desktop?

I don't think viewing illegal videos would damage the card but I could be wrong. - I still wouldn't be happy that that person viewed illegal movies as you would be held liable, after all your computer is yours and could be stored on your computer. If you get it running run anti virus and spyware etc...

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

You may also want to try powering the laptop off the cord whilst the battery is removed. This will test if the cable is working.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

some Memory modules are design too run together. If you would have mentioned earlier about the colour differences you problem would have been solved earlier but never mind...

Too run together the modules must be of the same type(size & speed). Mother boards usually have different coloured slots for memory if they are to run together.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

I like Ubuntu too. Its my favorite flavor of Linux.#

Try MPlayer.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

I prefer Firefox above all others.

How does a web browser make a difference to screen shots?

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Could you tell us what the problem is?

No internet connection, problem launching the web browser etc...

I'm using firefox 3.0.10, and it does it every time for that ad only.

Is it something to do with the fact that it is a roll over ad?

All I have to say is get rid off it or fix it. It is very annoying.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

They don't make dreamweaver or photoshop for linux.

But you can use them using Wine or find an alternative.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Hello,

It looks as if some drivers are missing or corrupt for the drive.

Can you go into device manager and see if the drive is listed and if there are any exclamation marks next to it.

I suggest giving this a read.

- Let us know what you see.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

It may seem to run flawlessly but if something essential is stored in memory it could crash. Something like an internet browser may use a bad part of memory and it glitches for a second but if system critical program uses a bad part it may crash.

If it is under warranty give em a ring and see what they say. Really they should't be that many errors.
