I just discovered Dial-a-Fix after going through the entire 'softwares worth downloading' thread and it fixed the problem I was having. It reloads system dll files. Give it a try.

GrimJack 1,414 Posting Maven Featured Poster

I had a similar problem - it turned out to be a bad memory chip. Check your manual to make sure that you have your memory in the correct pair of dimm sockets and then check which socket to use if you only have one memory chip.

I am looking at a picture of your board and I see a yellow pair and a red pair. On my board, A1 and A2 are the closest to the cpu slot and B1 and B2 are below that. Mine are loaded single chip to B1; pair of chips to A1 & B1. If your MoBo is similar and the problem is with memory, then the memory in B1 is bad - remove it and put the other chip in its place.

I hope this helps!

Thanks for the hint, but no export versions and only file as dtbIV and older works formats. The problem is that the database is wonderful to have lists and individual reportsheet side by side, but I'd like to sort them differently und also calculate and WDB is not very versatile.
The general question is :"how do I transport info from horizontal cells into vertical cells,.. thats all! it MUST be possible??
friedolin

Heh,heh - I just reloaded MSWorks to see what you were on about -- yep, there are some interesting decisions made on what to let users play with. Let me see if I understand - you have MSWorks and built a database with the names you want to sort as field/column names? and now want them as row names so you can sort them. I have Works v8 and can 'save as' .wsb, .csv, .txt. .dbf. csv and tst files can be imported into excel - if you do not have excel then try installing OpenOffice (http://www.openoffice.org/). As far as I know, this program will import most if not all of the extensions. Once there you can do pivot tables and so on. The open office stuff is open along the lines Linux and other *nix open source programs. It should not be very difficult to pick as it is juat another program like all the others., If you have any more questions, please ask - I could load OpenOffice and fudge around

The noisiest fan I ever had was the fan on an old video card; that combined with the graphics halucinations suggest looking at that. Ummm, open up the case and turn it on; if you can not tell where the sound is coming from - try using a bit of tubing as a sort of stethescope to see if you can narrow down where the sound is coming from. Hope this helps

Hi,

I've done everything accept install
CPU
Heat Sink
Fan,

I read somwhere that you have to use some sort of paste, and need a tool, that has like three legs and a scew piece in the middle to seat the H/S and FAN correctly.

I also read that its very easy to not seal the connection and melt your cpu. Or screw down to hard and damage the MoBO How difficult is it realy.

The reason I ask is I've just built a new system (using a bare bones starter pack) and am having problems with the cpu overheating. I know for sure the fan is working but have been reading that some of the standard fans for the P4 630 chips are not effective enough to keep them cool....

Well, here are a couple of links: http://support.intel.com/support/processors/manuals/ http://www.ramelectronics.net/html/cpu_cooling_install-klamuth.html From what I remember of installing an AMD cpu, I cut a match book cover to the size of the heat sink/cpu interface and applied some thermal paste and spread it with the piece of cardboard; all you are trying to do is to fill in the microscopic pits to make a 'more perfect union'.

My recipes for gamerz and/or other easily distracted folks:
(We buy our rice in big bags so we generally fill a canister w/rice and put it in the freezer overnight; we wash our rice prior to cooking so we control what sorts of protein is in it <grin>. )

2 cups water per washed cup of rice
bring water to boil then add rice, let it come to a boil again.
Turn burner off and leave rice, covered, on the burner and go back to your game. Twenty minutes speeds by and your rice is done w/o having to pay too much attention. Usually I add spices to the water before I start so the rice is already flavored - usually, a curry of some sort. Once cooked, rice can be treated like cooked patatos. You can add any food you have in the fridge to the rice - fry the rice then break a couple eggs into it and stir w/onions and garlick, and so on. If you don't wash your rice use about 2 1/3 cups water per cup rice. i like this methode because the worst thing you can do is boil away the water.

Go to most any Asian grocery store and peruse the ramon isle. You can get all kinds of soup and fried noodle packages for about 50cents - not as cheap as TopRamen but better flavor. Usually you pour boiling water over the bowl with noodles cover and …

LOL :D

I got by in school simply by being cool to everyone. But, that's not to say I couldn't handle myself with some well-placed roundhouse kicks :)

I got by in school by being crazy (well actually, i just did not perceive the world like them); I had a velour sweater - the velour was soft and fuzzy on the outside, so I wore it inside out. There were other things but I also learned that if you grab someone's elbow and press your thumb into the joint, they fall to their knees then I could walk away. If they persisted, I would grab their elbow again and when they dropped to their knees, I would poke them in that spot behind the jaw just under the ears - they usually went rag-doll after that.

Of course, they would sometimes attack me in packs and beat the crap out of me, sigh. High school in Montana was not nice to anyone who was different (1960s rural life was probably the same across the country).

I could never get my foot up high enough to kick - I always envied those guys who could (shhh, and often fantasized about women who could .. nevermind).

If you use FireFox, you can choose the default dowload location which I always put on my largest drive and name it My Downloads. Every once in a while, I list the contents by size and delete the big ones. If it is an important file (like Eudora and so on), I save it a level deeper.

I dl loads of stuff (from trusted sites) and mostly wait a couple days before installing and i usually decide that I don't need it and delete the file.

FF has a pop-up that tells you when your dl has completed and has a button to open it immediately, which is cool but then I end up with a lot of installed stuff I never use, sigh!

Well, you can try http://www.proxomitron.info/45/help/Installation.html. It can be used as a very basic proxy but as you gain confidence and interest you can add all sorts of stuff to it. It is not freeware, the auther calls it ShonenWare meaning that in order to own your copy you must listen to his favorite group Shonen Knife (the music is pretty good).

The nice thing about proxonitron is that it does not install, does not put files anywhere but in its directory. Does not mess with the registry; if you don't like it just delete the directory it is in and it is gone.

I used it for 5 years and the only problem I had with it was when I got ahead of my skill set.

The quick answer is that FireFox offers Tabs (instead of opening a separate window for every website you visit, it opens tabs in the window you are in-- I hope I am clear in this.) The advantage of Tabs is that if you are doing research on a couple of topics you can have one window open that is all the sites you are visiting that are about adding graphics to your website and the other window could have tabs for all the chat, blog.forums that you visit. You only have 2 windows open but could be on 20 different websites - way kool.

And you can add extensions that do things for you but that is getting ahead of the learning curve.

The best reason to use FireFox is that it does not have a the holes in it that ie does and most hackers are still hung up on attacking ie.

GrimJack 1,414 Posting Maven Featured Poster

Could you have blocked IE from the web? I do not use Norton as my firewall, I use ZoneAlarm and ZA has options to block access to the net on a per-program basis - verify that you have not blocked it's access. Everytime you upgrade a program that passes through the firewall, you have to re-authorize (well, if the firewall is any good this is true).

If this is not the problem, you will have to offer more information - what happens when you try to access the web?

GrimJack 1,414 Posting Maven Featured Poster

You could also try www.fool.com - you can go through their articles w/o having to subscribe. If you are new to investing, invest in a Mutual Fund that tracks an index (they are called index funds). Watch the fees, index funds should be no-load, with fees below .5%

Pay close attention to fees - if you are buying a stock, the fee for the purchase should be less than 2% of the cost of the purchase (ie. if the commission is $10, you should buy at least $500 of the stock)

If you want to combine mutual funds with buying individual shares, try sharebuilder.com - http://www.sharebuilder.com/AB/0206/V2/Index.asp this is a really good place to start.

Another thought is a process called DRiPing - dividend re-investment. You buy one share of a company that offers dividends and allows drips (morningstar.com can help here). A statement arrives that tells you the purchase price of the share you just bought and has a coupon that you send in with your next purchase. Generally there is not fee for this but sometimes there is a minimum purchase but you can get away with $10-50 each time. If you send in the minimum each time a coupon arrives, you will suddenly have a shit load of shares. I usually stop dripping when I get to 100 shares or enough shares the the dividend total buys a whole share.

Sorry, I did not mean to …

I have been against the death penalty for a long time but I have had to question that stance. Ted Bundy made me believe in the death penalty. But otherwise, I still think that the death penalty is wrong on 99.99999% of the cases it is applied to. I guess I am still waffling on this.

All the answers were pretty good - just one quick caveat - Asus MBoards require that you use an IDE drive for OS (well, at least A8V-deluxe makes installing OS onto SATA drives quite the geek challenge) and much to my chagrin, you have to have a floppy drive too.

You did not mention what you were going to buy so I thought I would plop this into the pool.

I just dl-ed mbm 5 and I am puzzled/worried by some of the readings I get. The reason I got it was cuz my Asus probe made a dramatic shift in cpu temp. It was running at 28 C -cpu and 22 C -Mobo then suddenly it jumped to 44 c and 23 C. with no change on my part.

So mbm 5 did not have the a8v deluxe Rev2, it had the a8v deluxe wireless Edition - i don't know if it makes a difference but that is what I chose.
It shows Case 18 C and cpu 23 C. this is different enough to bother me but the Voltages are way different:

Asus probe reports:
+12v -- 11.855
+ 5v -- 5.16
+3.3c -- 3.36
Vcore -- 1.472

Where as mbm reports:
Core 0 - 1.47
Core 1 - 3.12
+3.3-- 3.36
+5-- 5.16
+12 --16.32
-12 - 0
-5 - 0

Not only are my temps off enough to bother me but the +12 scares me!!

could the a8v deluxe be different enough from the wireless to give readings lke this?

any suggestions?

Check out the Zalman quiet cpu cooler - fan sits inside the radiator fins - it is about a pound of copper/aluminm. Also, I don't think it is a good idea to have more air blowing into the machine than out - if you do put 2 fan sucking up front you really should have 2 fans blowing out the back to keep the air flow good. You might also wrap your ribbon cables into tubes w/tape (or spring for the pre-made round cables) to improve air flow.

I have the Asus A8V Deluxe w the a64 3200+ 939 - I really like it but it was a pain to get up and running - it came with a bios chip v1008 and needed a bios version v1009. Once I put the upgraded bios chip in I everything pretty much runs smoothly. Important note on the Asus - talks to you so you need to have your speakers plugged in on boot (if there are problems). I also got the huge fans - the machine is so quiet I have to look down to make sure it is running (well not really, my screen would probably go blank if it weren't). The reason I got the Asus was the price/performance ratio and I am going to overclock my a64.

No one seems to be reading this thread but here is what I found:

I just got off the line with the tech: I have the mobo with bios 1008 and there are 2 versions of the cpu one requires bios 1008 and one requires bios 1009. Guess which one he thinks I have. Their bios guy is going to send me the bios chip (it is supposed to be easily swapped) and I will send them my old one back. My attention span/short term memory is bad but I think he said the a64 3200+ 939 (mod cg) requires the 1009 bios. When I can get ahold of some pure solvent to clean off the thermal compound, I will look at the cpu and report back (there may be others who hit this same wall)

I ended up getting the agp 8x just because it was easier; I got an ASUS A8V deluxe mobo with the a64 3200+ 939 cpu which, oddly enough has 2 versions. One version requires an ASUS bios v.1008 and one requires the v.1009 - guess which cpu I got matched with which bios? By the way I believe the tech said that the cpu version that requires v1009 is the a64 3200+ 939 (mod cg). When I get some pure solvent to clean the thermal compound off the chip I will take a looksee at the version I have.

I am building my 2nd kit (built 1st one in 99 - still going strong but it won't run either Deus X2 or 1/2Life2 so...).
My first question:
is it worth $100 to buy the cpu/MoBo/memory pre-built and tested (with free 2nd day shipping)?
Would it be better to go PCI express vs AGP 8X on the MoBo?
How about Athlon 64 vs 64(fx)?
I am trying to compare prices of pre-builts vs combos vs buying the pieces and assembling it myself.
I am trying to keep the kit price to $1200 or below and I still have to shop for memory, graphics etc. I can stick with my current 19" monster monitor and shop for a good deal on a 19" flat screen later.
The 2 places I am currently looking are at ZipZoomFly (every item is shipped 2nd day free) and J&N computers (all pre-assembled kits are 2nd day free).

and this is where I ended:

Internet backbone
This superfast network spanning the world from one major metropolitan area to another is provided by a handful of national Internet service providers (ISPs). These organizations (including Net 99 and Alternet) use connections running at approximately 45 mbps (T3 lines) linked up at specified interconnection points called national access points (which are located in major metropolitan areas). Local ISPs connect to this backbone through routers so that data can be carried though the backbone to its destination.

I think both Morpheus (not the paid version) and Kazaa have adware with them. Kazaa is supposed to have a secret (but everyone seems to know about it) program that works like Seti@home and Folding@home to combine spare cycles - they were going to sell the cpu time; I don't know if they kept that in or not.
