I'm not sure how techie audience is a wide miss for people arriving at DaniWeb for the first time. Surely if you've arrived at DaniWeb you either have a coding/development problem of some sort or are looking to connect with other tech-minded folk? It's not exactly somewhere that your average Jo(e) would stumble upon, in my never humble opinion :-) All of that said, I'm an inveterate tinkerer and so would love a homepage that enbabled me to tweak it as I see fit - although I get why that might not be what Dani wants. As for the hamburger/waffle menu icon, it's pretty much a universal thing now across so many sites, services and platforms that I imagine the vast majority of users (or maybe the majority of users in a younger age group than us anyway) would immediately understand what it was.

OK, so we are thinking about bringing back the 'Member of the Month' feature in the monthly newsletter that goes out to all DaniWeb members. This was a staple in the DaniWeb Digest for many years, coming to an end at the start of 2016. The hall of fame was, aptly, entirely virtual but the kudos of being included as real as it gets.

Three questions then:

1. Would you read the Member of the Month interview if it was brought back?

2. Would you be interested in being interviewed, or want to nominate another member for the interview?

An early Xmas present to myself arrived at Chez Moi last month in the shape of a rather thick credit card. It's not actually a credit card though, and while it's a chunky 6mm wide it is pretty smart truth be told. That's because it's a clinically validated cardiac diagnostic device, a heart monitor to you and me, called a WIWE. Once I got myself over the fact that I cannot stop pronouncing it as a wee wee, I quickly found the WIWE does a whole lot more than your Fitbit or smartwatch can do in terms of monitoring your heart health.

Sure, the Apple Watch 4 can offer heart rate variability (HRV) monitoring and produce something akin to an electrocardiogram (ECG) in order to detect an irregular heartbeat otherwise known as atrial fibrillation. The ECG part of the heart monitoring functionality has even got FDA clearance, so this isn't a device feature to be sniffed at. The Apple Watch 4 cardiac stuff works by measuring the voltage between left and right arms, and the resulting signal is equivalent to that of 'lead one' of the 12 lead clinical ECG some readers may be familiar with. The Apple ECG requires the user to rest a finger on the digital crown, while resting their arms on a table top or some such. After 30 seconds it reports the results, …

Sorry for coming in late to the discussion (just back from a couple of days of business travel that sucked the life out of me) but I am with Dani on this one: contacting a member for whatever reason is making a connection, and the new system seems to work well enough once you get over the notion that 'making a connection' is somehow a bad thing. The move by Microsoft to adopt a Chromium-powered version of Edge isn't all good news though. I penned an article last week around this, looking at the potential security implications of a move towards a browser monoculture. Tim Callan, who was part of the team that developed extended validation certificates sums it up when he says "in the certificate space, this monoculture could lessen the influence of many important voices" talking about the likes the IEFT and CA/Browser governance on the interoperability requirements for public PKI mechanisms such as TLS certificates, for example. Interesting times for sure, whether they are necessarily good times is a very different matter.

Sure. I had to explore a little to find the different options, and some needed more exploration than others. But once I discovered them I didn't find the UI confusing. So, with the profile settings for example, I just worked my way through all the options including the business networking one as I appreciated that DaniWeb and Dazah have become a single entity and it makes sense to make it clear who I'd be interested in connecting with and for what purpose - mainly as a preventative measure to try and stop as many unwanted connection requests as possible truth be told. As far as the 'continue to step 2' thing, even though it doesn't say 'more options' I kind of guessed that there was more left for me to do because there was a second step flagged in the process. Sure, I'm not a newbie to DaniWeb but I am a newbie to this interface and had no access to it as it was being developed - so feel my exposure is as genuine/relevant as any new member. I guess the proof of the pudding will be in bums on seats stats, engagement, retention etc.

Hi CorinthCom, the Galaxy Watch works with any Android phone (Android 5 upwards), and for that matter the iPhone (iOS 9 on) as well, but to get the best out of it you need to be using a Samsung device. The reason being that the watch runs on the same Tizen OS as the Samsung phones. That said, from what I can gather it's email and messaging that take the biggest hit - as in you can only get these apps on the watch if you are synced to a Samsung phone. You still get the notifications, but would have to go to your phone to access the actual messages.

I'm wondering if the code snippet post in question is authorless because the original poster quit DaniWeb with the nuclear option? It's a five year old snippet, so it must be something to do with the transition from old system to new? As I say, only guessing, but this snippet from a member who isn't active anymore but is still a member shows author name at the end of the posting in same way as reviews/news.

My first smartwatch was pretty dumb, to be honest, and put me off the concept for many years to come: a Microsoft Spot.

Confession time: I'm a born again smartwatch fan. I used to not see the point, and then somehow managed to buy a Samsung Gear S3 Frontier and everything changed. That this thing looked like a watch, had an innovative rotating bezel as an input control mechanism and worked so smoothly with my newly purchased Samsung Galaxy S8+ were the main reasons for that. Having been a very happy smartwatch bunny for the past 18 months or so, I was both interested and annoyed when the next-gen of the Samsung Gear watch family hit the market. I know, I know, there's always going to be something a little better just around the corner and 18 months is a long time in technology. My annoyance was more about the cost, especially as the S3 Frontier wasn't exactly cheap.

Then along came Black Friday which at least got me exploring the possibilities of upgrading to the new Galaxy Watch. I use the term upgrading purposefully as well; that's precisely what I ended up doing. The Black Friday deal, directly through the Samsung Shop online I should add, didn't discount the watch itself which was still £299 for the 46mm Bluetooth (non-4G) version I was interested in. Instead it threw the 'Duo' wireless charger that charges watch and phone together into deal. Dani, he wasn't asking if he could buy such a list from DaniWeb. He was 'asking' if he should buy the list from the spammy link which I deleted for the reasons already stated: this was not a genuine query about buying email lists, it was a specific plug for one seller of such lists.

I see no questions, at least no real ones. I see a spammer trying to promote a service. Why else go to the bother of including the URL and obfuscating it by padding before and after the '.' so that it doesn't show as a link (and therefore hopefully escape any spam detection) - or am I just being too cynical here? The answer is no, no I am not. I've also removed the link from the post, as the general question is still valid and the answer from rproffitt very useful to anyone considering buying such a list.

I can answer from the other side of the equation. I have been a freelance writer for close on 30 years, and the way people find me hasn't really changed all that much apart from one aspect: it's a lot easier to find me now than it was in 1991. It has always been the case that prospective new clients come to me because they have either: seen my work elsewhere, I have been recommended to them by someone who has already used me or they have searched Google for a freelance technology journalist (or freelance security journalist.) Generally speaking, most people these days come to me having used all three methods. So, they might get a recommendation, go google me and then go look at some of my work.

To answer your question more directly, I will say that you won't find 'good' freelance writers by taking the cheapest option from a freelance writing forum/agency. If someone is offering a range of prices depending on the quality you get then run away. Any freelance writer worth contracting will have just the one rate which is usually negotiable depending upon the nature of the work and the length of the agreement - I charge less if I am contracted for a year of monthly blogs than I do for a one-off arrangement. Certainly they will only have one quality level and that's the best, all of the time.

Have been trying to change my profile pic via the community profile update avatar option. I keep getting told that 'The image you are attempting to upload doesn't fit into the allowed dimensions.' However, there is no clue as to what the allowed dimesions might be. The one I'm trying to upload has been sized down to 490x653 (171kb) and I can't recall what the limits previously were, will keep trying smaller and smaller - but thought it might be an idea to flag the max size in the error message that is thrown up.

I'm not seeing what you are seeing (waits for chorus of 'that is the problem') homepage apart. The forum category pages I visit that apply default recommended filtering have an option to remove that filter, which then shows me everything - as far as I am aware anyway (certainly the posts served up to me change.) Given that Dani is already seeing a upturn in the analytics that matter if DaniWeb is to actually survive, surely we should give her (and the new system) a bit more time to see if this turns into a positive trend or is just actually a blip? If the new system is working for most people connecting with DaniWeb then it will be the former, if it is an obstacle to seeing content then the latter. No?

I'd pick up on, and validate, what Dani has said in that last comment to be honest. From my own perspective, I don't really worry too much about what is being displayed on the new home page as I'm more interested in seeing what's new - so my first action on firing DaniWeb up is to hit the hamburger and load the latest posts view. I can see where everyoone is coming from, but I think that the home page view and the latest posts view (or any of the other views) are chalk and cheese: the former is for newbies/visitors/general audience and needed to help generate the revenue that's required if DaniWeb is to survive, the latter is for advanced/veteran users who know what they are looking for and aren't afraid to use the available tools in order to go find them. I suspect if the home page view had been called 'trending' from the get go, rather than 'recommended' then this particular conversation might not have been taking place. Isn't this more about semantics than practicalities?

You'll need to do better than just cut and pasting your homework assignment if you want help from DaniWeb members I'm afraid. Show us the code you have so far and explain where you are getting stuck, then someone might be able to point you in the right direction. Nobody is just going to do your stuff for you, sorry.

Depends if you are matching the entire network/host identifier or not to trigger that alert. Bait and spam scammers can be on the same network but different hosts (as evidenced many times by a little investigation showing both accounts joined DaniWeb within an hour of each other and use similar naming conventions)

I always used to use the IP to make it easier to spot, well to confirm the suspicions, that a bait and spam operation was happening. Location I could care less about if I'm honest, I'm more of a global guy :-)

I am something of a self-confessed Anker hardware fan. I've been using their cables, power supplies and portable chargers for years now. However, I never really thought of Anker in the audio space, until now. Soundcore is an Anker brand with just audio products out there, as the name suggests. So, I needed some new earphones for my daily multi-mile walks and thought I'd give Soundcore a go. Especially when I saw these 'Liberty Lite' wireless earbuds were so much cheaper than the big brand versions from the likes of Apple, Bose and Samsung. Not that I have an iPhone, I'm currently a Samsung kind of a guy for my sins. Anyway, I took the plunge and as these earbuds have had something of a mixed bag of reviews on Amazon I thought I'd share my experiences with DaniWeb users.

First things first then, the price. Here in the UK, Apple is currently asking a whopping £159 ($200) for a pair of AirPods. Way too expensive an ask for me, especially as I say I don't have an iPhone. OK, so seeing as I do have a Samsung phone what sort of price are a set of the latest Gear IconX earbuds? Erm, amazingly they are even more expensive at £179 ($230) which is the same as a set of Bose SoundSport buds. All far too rich for my blood I'm afraid. I agree about the typeface colouring. My eyes would prefer more contrast, have to squint a bit - thought it was just me!

I wouldn't say it's a biggie in the scheme of things, just stands out a bit as an interface inconsistency when the navigation hamburger is available on every other page I've accessed so far.

If you visit the Member Search page, the hamburger navigation menu top left is missing. You have to go back to the home page instead. Is this intentional?
