At first it wouldn't start at all but that ended up being only a wire being connected the wrong way

just curious ,what wire.

also make sure it/cpu didn't get overclocked and is not stable at current setting.
set bios to defaults

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

hi,don't take this the wrong way please ,but one would think if you knew how to build a motor speed control circuit you could easily figure out how to get it connected to a device .

to the best of my knowledge ,you would need a lot of knowlede of electronics to do what you are trying to do,what kind of usb device do you have that you want to disassemble .
good luck

i would like to upgrade to windows seven, i have been told however that i would first have to upgrade to windows xp sp2, and then go onto windows seven. could someone please confirm that this is the case.will be grateful for any advice. thank you. sonya

aside from needing more of everything to run win7 ,you do not need to upgrade to winxp sp2 ,you can go right to win7 but you will need to do a fresh install loosing all of you 2000 programs and such so you will have to backup first, check links in my signature,on how to install and also download the win7 adviser it will tell you if you the specs to run win7

Do you think a modern sound driver will work?

if you have a modem sound card combo and have the right drivers it should ,install drivers way back then was not as easy as it is today

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

I just went on http://www.piriform.com/recuva and you can only download if I pay for it.

click on one of the links by the red check mark

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

it been a long time since i used win3.1 and when i did i didn't know much about them .

all version will run that setup .but ,if you want to run more than 3.5meg ram you need to run a 64 bit .version pro or ultimate would be my choice ,i have ultimate but i go it free from Microsoft for hosting a win7 release party back in sept 09,wish i had something like your upcoming setup to run it on .
check this like on differences in win7 version and then decide .

way back then i remember seeing video of a 1 gig amd cpu running at 3gig ,heatsinc had a Styrofoam cup filled with dry ice to cool it

Geek squad is a ripp off ,first they charge 1 hrs labour to diagnose the problem ,even though they already know its a dead hdd.they charge labour to install the hdd,[takes about 2 min ]then charge about 2 hrs labour to install windows '
i don't know where you live but there must be small computer repair shop somewhere near by ,
most small shops where i live could do it for about 65.00 for hdd ,and 50.00 to install your windows back on it , total 115.00cdn

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

when installing did you do a custom install and make sure to tell it to run from harddrive and not cdrom
why install both ,just install 07,it will be compatible with any 03 files you may have

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

a bit more searching and i find it not available for vista home basic, you will need to upgrade to vista home premium or ultimate

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

and i just booted up a old dell laptop running winxp pro ,and it has folder option icon in control panels classic view ,you must not be in classic mode .open control panel /on the left it should say show/use classic mode ,in folder option ,go to view ,and there you will see show hidden file extensions

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

I have xpmode[xp pro] running in win7 and it has a icon for folder option ,is you control panel in classic mode

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

go start /control panel ,there should be icon for folder options

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

I should have paid more attention to an earlier post of of yurs; you didn't have any extensions on the files you listed. My apologies for the oversight.
I don't really know why the option to hide extensions exists.. it just seems silly and dangerous to me.

i agree .but the file type should show and a exe is a application ,as i stated in a previous post

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

if cdrom is in the boot list in the bios it will try to load ,check boot order in bios if its there remove it .most bios setups will let you

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

Look at what? It seems to be an unreadable mess, not a clue where to even start.

yeah not a pro at it yet myself, but its somewhere to start doing you troubleshooting.
in the attachment i numbered the steps i take ,1-2-3 .
www.google.com has more info than i do ,its where i start looking for solution when i have trouble .

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

sorry, had you said that in your first post i would not have replied,i don't use gmail

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

That's interesting - and sounds harmless.

I've tried it.

Now my PC simply reports "4Gb RAM" with no further comment about "usable RAM".

What have I done ?!?

Are there any downsides ?

Surely this hasn't fixed my BSOD problem - it couldn't possibly be so simple, could it ?

Cheers

Graham

you need to find out whats causing your bsod first ,you just assuming its the ram .go back to my other post and get bsod viewer

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

I'd like to know if I can boot from another hard drive that already has an existing/running version of WinXP on it?
Thank you again for information
DJ Beaver

that would only work if the computers had the same motherboard in them .
you should not have any bios issues just changing bood devices .
