rule of thumb ,don't stop anything in the sysrtem32 folder ,
and the password question as hericles says ,but also look fo change way user logs in

might i add , only folder that should be stored on the desktop are shortcuts to folder stored on your C;/ drive or other storage drive ,don't store folders full of file on the desk,the desktop is just a file windows uses to show the desktop icons and if it were to get corrupted you will loose all things stored on it and they are not stored anywhere else on the hard drive but in the desktop.ini file .
It happened to me ,but i only lost a pit of junk files

did you dowmload drivers for the laptop from hp ,or just use the ones in win7 or is it the hp recovery that you used ,anyway you may need either the sound or keyboard driver to get that function on the desktop .

you need a recovery disc or Windows install disc to run recovery

or the recovey partition on the harddrive ,and you can access it through the f8 key/options on most newer laptops/computers

or there may not be an update ,when i google i find drivers for but they are 2007 dated,you could check the computer makers wesite also ,some brand name computer may have there own updates to chipset drivers

Well now I'm feeling extremely stupid..
Indeed, the problem was that I accidentally turned off the wireless lan pressing Ctrl+F2. Spend a few hours looking for solutions, feel extremely stupid lol :)

im sure if you google hard enough you'll find what your looking for ,the chip in my first link fits on the tip of your finger so it will definitely fit in the laptop ,but it will need to be in a device that supplies power to it, so that will make it bigger '
i don't think looking for info on a Windows help forum is the place to start looking for info on creating this type of business ,
multi billion dollar car manufactures have a lot more at there disposal than you and I ,so its easier for them ,remember that like the car company's,[GM and OnStar for example ] you have to supply the laptop customer with a tractable device, but you also have to supply the tracking ,you have to find it for them and get it back ect ect.

not till 08/04/2014 for xp sp3 actually, a short time in computer years i know, but sill a while away !

so ,you computer doesn't even see the harddrive ,or sees it and just cant play the different file type .if so get VLC media player it plays all types of media files

run the win7 repair ,either from the dvd or hitting f8 on bootup should give it as a option

don't have an answer, but will said that as of the past few months this board has become really quiet,especially on the weekends

dvd dosen't play as cdrom doesen't read i can't even use mw recovery disk.

technically speaking if you description is accurate,it because it a cdrom and you need a dvdrom to read dvd .now im sure you didnt mean a cdrom ,and you do have a dvdrom drive correct .then you have a bad dvdrom ,does it show in mycomputer ,if so cant you right click on it and choose open

my suggestion is to boot the xp cd againg and when you get to options don't choose install choose deleted partition ,then you will be prompted to create a new partition do so,then choose format ,and i suggest ntfs ,not fat32
after hitting f8 on the winxp install you will see below scree ,

there should be a button or key to turn the wireless on and off ,i assume you tried that ,also did you try or can you connect wired to the router/modem .
a lot of what you say excepts live Linux points to a Trojan or virus if you cant get on line with the laptop i suggest downloading something like Superantivirus or malwarebytes on a working computer and transferring to the laptop and installing and scanning with it .

Well, i personally prefer linux, and i think, it CAN (but wont) dominate. The problem is that programs are not made for linux mostly, i dont know if it is policy or ...
and still i use windows ONLY for few programs.

Thanks for the responses, I currently have a FUJITSU MHZ232OBH G2 ATA hard drive, and I"m unsure what kind of hard drive would be compatible with my computer, for example, I"m looking at tigerdirect, and it has PATA,SATA,SATA II, what are the differences and are they compatible with my computer and also just to be sure, all laptops use a 2.5" hard drive?

your ATA is the PATA, sata or sata 2 will not fit the plugin connector of the laptop

media test failure is related to a setting in the bios ,see if you can boot to the bios/setup and set it to defaults , .
or have a look here if setting to defaults doesn't work

It may be true that Win XP was a huge thing at the time it came out, and was very reliable (more than Vista I could agree that), but you have to let it go, and choose for a new and fresh look, and improved functionality and reliability (yes Windows 7 is a stable OS as well!).
The 8086-processors may have been state-of-the-art at the time they were invented, does that mean we all have to keep using them? :)

i defently agree with everything you say , i use win7 ultimate [been using it since before the final release,got a free copy from Microsoft ,got picked to have a win7 coming out party ]with winxp mode and only time i find a need to startup winxp is to refresh my memory on how to get to certain function to help someone on Daniweb having a issue with winxp

OP is looking for just the media center software to install on his winxp .
i searched for and it no where to be found ,so far

just download them again ,the 192 bit rate should still work ,i always just copy the files to a thumb drive leaving original on the computer ,just for that reason

Window 7 is latest, so it is more better.

there are lots of confusion in that table it does not show how mych ram is used bye the 64 bit windows 7 professionl PC mine currenty usinf 40 % of 4 GB ram

from what i seen in the link it only shows how much ram they can use ,not how much it will use ,that would be different on all computers ,for various reasons

actually it was suppose to stress all the non microsoft items you check of to see if one of them cause the computer to blue screen before you got to restart the computer .so i guess that didn't work

I found out that my hard drive should be replace a new one, because the seatool will not continue to test and it says failed etc...anyway i am still looking for the hard drive that you have said.by the way about the 7200rpm does this will matter to my processor my processor is dual core 2.1 Ghz intel...

it should be no problem to use either a 5400 or 7200 rpm drive ,like i said before its usually just a power consumption and heat issue for the laptop .your laptop will work just fine with a 5400 rpm drive that what most use anyway ,so i wouldn't really be concerned with getting a 7200rpm drive

ok ,so the windows download will be a .zip file it will contain a ISO file ,thats a image of the memtest program ,so you need to have a program to burn the iso to disk ,this free one is used when computer doesn't have iso burning software all ready .after disk it burnt reboot computer with disk in the drive and it should boot to it and run automatically ,if it fails to boot to it , use a F-key [usually f10 or f11 ]do this when you first boot laptop before going into windows ,to bring up boot options and choose internal cd/dvd drive
