i just installed safari on my compaq v2000 ,over 3 yrs old with ati radeon 200m video device and its there and works for me,
a workaround for you might be to go to the toolbar to the far right top ,click on the icon that looks like a cough wheel and go to customize toolbar and drag the top site icon onto the tool bar, drop it on the very top of the toolbar next to the wheel icon

Thanks, Caperjack

The intent with using a XPProSP3 installation, a downloaded version, was to avoid the manual service pack updating.

The suggestion to go back to an XP installation is a good one but until the problem has been properly identified there is no guarantee the same problem simply won't occur then. (It is clearly happening with XPSP2, since that was the original question.)

Do you have any idea what these dll files and the migisol.exe actually do?

What would you think about my attempting a full installation? The laptop has a clean Windows XP Upgrade Advisor report and has nothing on it. It was cleaned out years ago when all the applications being used were transferred to a XPPro desktop. I am upgrading it to use as a notebook - the Toshiba Portege 3110CT was a nice piece of hardware.

Should any of these files prove to be required could they simply be downloaded afterwards? I have a desktop with XPProSP3 and all the dll files can be sourced from there. migisol.exe appears to be a Windows 95/98/2000 app and is not in my desktop XPProSP3 C:\WINDOWS\ anyway.

Your advice would be very much appreciated as I am going nowhere fast!

Regards

Peter

Hi,I would go for the full install if it were me ,
Adamsappleone's post above says it better than i ever could as to what the files are for ,thank you

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

Did you ever get a solution, Mike?

I am having exactly the same problem upgrading from 98 (not SE) to XP SP3 on a Toshiba Portege laptop which I am upgrading as a notebook.

What is unusual is that these files are in C:\WINDOWS on the hard drive but not on the installation CD!

are you having the exact same problem ,or just having a problem upgrading to winxp sp3 , one thing i would suggest is to try upgrading to winxp sp1 first ,then install the other 2 sp's

Hi Jhoefs,
Sorry to hear about your virus problem. Theres almost always a way to clean up most viruses without formatting your machine but if you don't have the skills to clean it up or know somebody else who does, its probably the best way to go. Its good to format every so often anway, it will have your machine running as good as new.

First thing to do is back up your data. Do you have much to back up? If you have multiple partitions on your hard drive or more than one drive? e.g. C:, D:, E: etc. If so, you can move data from your C drive onto other partitions. The most obvious places to back up are your (and the other users on the machine) user profile. The most important folders are the My Documents folder, Favourites, Desktop (get the files and folders, leave the shortcuts). Some applications store stuff in not so obvious places so you need to be careful if you don't want to lose data. Some applications will give you an option in the GUI (look for File > Export etc.) to back up your data, others don't so you need to find the folders where they store their stuff. Outlook stores your mail and contacts in c:\documents and settings\<username>\local settings\application data\microsoft\outlook\<profilename>.pst so grab that if you use it. Outlook Express uses a completely different location but both give you the option to export data from within the GUI. If you have …

The all thats left is to copy/restore your data back and start re-customising your setup.!!!!!!!

and hope you left the virus behind

Is Video Drivers Same As Video Cards?
No,the driver drives the video card ,sounds like maybe your video card is either not installed correctly or is not good enough to run the game. go to control panel ,system /open hardware /device manager ,and make sure video display is ok,no red x's or yellow !'s

t also when i re-installed xp it told me that there was already an os on my computer and installing another may affect the computers installment do you think that could have something to do with it?

that means you didn't format the harddrive when you reinstalled windows, as for drivers you should have gottin cd's with drivers for the motherboard and all other addin devices when you bought the computer

Windows Installer tries to continously install Photo Gallery.
It starts as soon as you boot up and won't stop.
How can this be fixed?

go to start ,all program and check start up folder to see if its coming from there ,also have you let it install it to see what happens

First check your BIOS settings and see if Hard Drive is detected by
your computer or not? If your Hard Drive doesnot show in BIOS,then
turn your computer off, and open the casing, check and see if the data cable is properly connected to the Hard Drive and other end of the data cable is properly connected to the IDE slot in the MB.
Make sure that your Hard Drive is connected to Primary Master ,the IDE Slot 0. Also check the power cord plugged into your Hard Drive.

its a laptop

any error indication in event viewer !

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

Glad that worked for you .
the easiest way to move files around is in windows explorer .
open explorer ,either with the windows key +E or in start ,all program ,accessories , when its open you see the content of your C:\ on the right and the file tree on the left ,you simply drag and drop files from the right side to where you want them to go on the left side !

I agree 100% with your concern about storing financial data on a computer. Howeveer, this particular computer has never been connected to the internet (and won't be connected to the internet).

my concern was not with the net, but with your hard drive failing on you

It looked to me that those were for the installed system RAM and regular RAM. I was looking for a support table or something.

that the 2 supported speeds of ram it will take !
you could likely run it with pc2- 6400 but it will only run at the higher of the 2 supported speeds

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

ok,what do you get when you go to safe mode, clicking on the admin acct ,does it ask for a password then also .

or click on the admin acct then hit enter ,which is what i think you are doing correct,
i'm a bit confused by what you mean by ,the 2 computer names under password

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

unit was running till opened to blow out.

you shut it down first correct!
shut it down ,remove power plug ,remove and reseat ram chips

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

I right clicked on control panel

open control panel ,go to user accounts ,clck to add a new acct ,give it a name ,then make it admin acct. ,this should work if you entered a admin account when you went into safe mode

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

It says what stock RAM is but not what is supported.
