Well I live in Greenville, SC. I only do side stuff on the weekends and when it does not intefere with spending time with my wife and son. That was another reason I left the retail industry. Because I am a real tech with real experience and real certifications that cost me money both in time, training, and the expense of exams, I generally charge for what my time is worth to me. If it's an emergency situation and will intefere with my normal weekend routine I charge around 60 dollars an hour. If it's something you can drop off to me and I can work on at my liesure, I charge 35 dollars an hour. I do not charge for parts because I will tell you what you need to go buy, and generally where to get it for the best price. And it also depends on what the issue is. For instance if it's obviously a blown modem or network card, I only charge 30 bucks flat out if you bring the pc and a new modem/nic to me or have it handy so that I can "swing" by.

Real Techs are worth there weight in gold [I'm not one ,but i did take a computer maintenence and repair cource ] ,because they actuall fix the problem ,not mask it with a realod . the tech in my post above who wanted the 400+ to install a hdd ,wanted 75.00/hr [1 hr] ,to diagnose problem , then 3 …

Well, I actually forgot to comment on that but I will now. Having worked in the retail side, I've seen people charge for a reload when it was not neccessary. The placed I worked for would even charge for a reload and perform a reload just to get rid of spyware that could have easily been removed without a reload. They charge $100 for a reload of a system. This was one of the many "bad" practices in the retail industry I disapproved of and was a major reason for me leaving. You are going to have people that will either charge to do something unneccessary to fix an issue because they get more money that way, or people that really don't know what they are doing or cannot think outside of the box. In this case, it sounds like the original tech that reloaded the system really ripped them off. You would be surprised how many customers now call me to do little things on the weekends for them because they refuse to go to the retail establishment I used to work at for lack of service or poor service.

*name of retail establishment not revealed to protect the guilty*

Regards,

LOL ,You don't happen to live in my home town do you .local private business with an association to The source ,reloads for all problems ,because that the quickest fix for spyware and viruses ,but having said that they only charge 35.99+ tax for the reload ,the tech …

This is a laptop right? Last time I checked, laptop keyboards have the numeric pad associated with standard keyboard keys. For instance on my Thinkpad if I turn Num Lock on then P becomes *, U becomes 4, I becomes 5, etc. Look for how to toggle num lock off and on.

This is because some cd burners can only write to one or the other. There is no fix other than to buy a new cd burner, sorry.

I have to disagree ,maybe I missed it somewhere along the line the past 9 years of owning a cd burner, and now a dvd /cd burner combo. ,but i have never heard of a cd burner that only burnt cd-rw ,and not cd-r .,now there are/were dvd burners made that only burn dvd+r's and not dvd -r's ,btr they are becoming a thing of the past
Yes it could be a dirty lenses ,as burning to cd r a cd rw is done a different level/power /deeper how ever you want to refer t othe type of burn !!

Hi there!
I just recently had to replace my motherboard and now I have no sound. I don't even know what to look for in the device manager. There are things listed under sounds( audio codecs, legacy audio drivers, legacy video capture devices, media control devices, video codecs), but I don't know what they are or if I even still have a sound card or onboard sound. My motherboard is supposed to be an ASUS M2V but in device manager it says something about viatech. I do have places on the back of the computer to plug in a microphone and speakers. As you can tell, I don't know much about fixing computers. I know enough to be dangerous but I really don't want to mess this up since I finally have everything sort of "fixed". I kept my hard drive but the guys who installed my motherboard said I should re-install windows, which I did, but I'm having trouble with some of my software so I'm sure I did something wrong when I installed it. Thanks for any help you can give me. Sorry to be so tech challenged!

Certain keys on laptop keyboard are weird, asterisk when I hit "P" key, 5 when I hit "O" key, etc. External keyboard hooked up via USB 2.0 works fine. This happened last summer (before I had external keyboard) and repair guy that I called out to come fix it said that something bad had entered via toolbars I had unwittingly installed.

So its been broke since last summer.,actually the reinstall should have fixed it if it were a viruse or some other nasty .

He took laptop away, had to remove all my docs/data and then reinstall. He charged me $228 and told me to run Adaware, SpyBot, Norton, plus defrag, once a week. Which I have done faithfully since then.

he ripped you off ,i do the same thing for 40 dollars or less .

Norton didn't catch it then, catches nothing now. I saw earlier posts on this forum and went and installed HiJack this, and unzipped it and ran it. There were some error messages that came up, of course I couldn't capture them coud only click OK and proceed. Here is logfile from Hijack this:

i did a quick look at the scan ,i don't see anything that could cause the keyboard problem ,may just be a bad keyboard.

You can start your computer in safe mode and get passed the sign in then delete the account who lost there password... but it depends who has administrative permission.

restart your computer push F8 until it askes you how you want to start windows

start up in safe mode

should give you the option to use administration account or parents account... click admin

once the desktop loads

Start/settings/control panel/user accounts

then you can delete the old account and start a new one
or you could just open a new account so you can use the computer

which ever way you choose make sure you give your self administrative options..

( i know you can get to the user accounts using the above options but depending on administation options you may not be able to delete the old account)

good luck

not sure about win2000 ,but in winxp you can just delete the password and not the whole user account .

Hello everyone, I am hoping you can help me with this problem, as I am running out of ideas. I installed Linux on a hard drive in my computer, and then afterwards, I switched back to Windows XP because my girlfriend couldn't get along with Linux very well. The problem I am having is this, my slave drive is no longer accessible through Windows, where it was before the Linux install. It is in BIOS and it is in Device Manager and Disk Management, but not in My Computer. I believe the problem to be that Linux changed the format to Ext2, and now I do not know how to access my data. It is still there, just not useable. I have used Get Data Back which did nothing for me, and I have used Partition Magic, which woud also not allow me any help. If there are any suggestions, I am open to trying anything. Thanks for the help.

P.S. - I am hoping there is an easier way than switching back to Linux and then adding to a network with Windows and transferring that way, as there is a lot of information and I only have one computer at the time.

Howdy all,

"Error Loading OS"

I have gone into the BIOS and adjusted boot priority. nothing.
I have gone inside and switched master and slave. nothing.
I have tried both version of windows. Nothing.

It reminds me of the christmas I was given a bike with no wheels.

sounds like you maybe have a SATA or scsi harddrive in you computer that you need to load drivers for before winxp will see the drive ,you do this when booting to winxp cd by hitting f6 to load drivers for sata/scsi drive .when prompted to do so ,usually the motherboard disk that came with the computer will have the drivers on it for the sata device controller,if you do have a sata drive .

Yeah, like all computer s-hit is so confusing ,i know, all i know is on some motherboard a BIOS update would fix hdd size limits ,as there has always been a limit ,like 32 ,then 64 then 128 and so on and so on ,this is a little old but interesting as to why the limits .
http://www.spcug.org/reviews/bl0107.htm

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

The 137GB limit is imposed by the BIOS, but for some reason with W2k the sp3 or sp4 will enable you to see hdds larger than the limit, the same is true with XP and sp2. I'm trying to find this out even as I write this.

As to my original question, it looks like the largest partition size offered while installing W2k is 131GB.

ok,i work on a lot of computer ,have to admit that most have smaller drives than 100 gig ,some have large ones but are new computers and don't have the 137 limit ,sorry i can't answer you ? ,but as i said before if you create 2 partitions of 100gig each you will not have that problem

I am strating to think it is a hardware problem.. It use to work when I reinsearted it .. now it does not.. the drive.. spins and everything and if the computer reads the drive.. it works..

I called support.. and they said I may need to run the recovery disk..

The purpose of slipstreaming is so that is does have an effect on what W2k shows for the hdd size, the sp4 will allow it to recognize hdds over 137GB. The slipstream combines the W2k and sp4 onto a CD for the purpose of one installation of the two.

The hdd in question is a 200GB Maxtor, and the Maxblaster CD does have a section for partitioning. Are you suggesting that I partition the drive prior to installing the operating system?

yes i understand, and use slipstreaming ,but i don't understand you gig limit ,my understanding of size limit harddrives is its with your computers the Bios, and not with windows ,therefor having sp4 in with win2000 shouldn't make any difference with the size limit ,
and yes if your bios has a size limit of 137 gig ,then use maxblast to make 2 or more partitions less than 137 gigs each and format them , before you install win2000 ,this way you computers bios will see 2 different drives ,both less than the 137 gig limit

Ok Caperjack, I tried another original CD and it works. So it's the cds that I copied files onto. Is there sometime I can do to have the PC recognize the copied ones?

is the cdrom an old drive as some old drives will not read burnt cd,
make sure you finalize the cd when burning them,in your burning software look for a check box to finilize cd it comes just before you click ok to burn [so nothing else can be written to them ] it closes the cd so drives can read the files ,i use nero ,i use multi-session [when i use multi i can read file without closing the disk] to add files to cd and when i see it getting full i check to finalize to close cd.

What burning software did you use ,and did you burn them on the computer you are trying to view them on .??

Hi all, I'm going to install a 200GB hdd that I've wiped and is ready to go. I have made a disk using Autostreamer slipstreaming W2k pro and sp4. My question is in regards to the partitioning section of the installation of the OS, I know from previous experience that the section will open with a screen with the words "Unpartitioned Space" with the amount shown on the right. With the 137GB limit, will my 200GB of unpartitioned space show or only the 137GB? If it doesn't and I proceed with the amount shown will the slipstream enable me to see the whole 200GB when it's finished?

Slipstream shouldn't have any affect on the what win2000 shows as the size of the drive ,if you have a bios limit of 137gig then I think that all you will see .try the hdd manufactor for a utility to setup the drive first ,if it a maxtor for instance look for maxblast software on there site

Hello all,

I am new to this site and I am a complete novice and know little when it comes to the workings of the inside of a computer.

I have a Toshiba Satellite Pro 6100 (I know I heard about all the problems)

When I bought it through the College I was attending everything worked fine.. this was 3 years ago..

Now on start up I get this

IDE ERROR #1

and my DVD/CD/RW is not detected
at first .. all I had to do was pull it out and push it back in.
(there is a little switch that releases it from the computer no screws necessary)

now That does not even work.. I get lucky every now and again and my computer reads the drive.. but most of the time I can not.

As stated this was the DVD/CD/RW that came with the computer and is not new..

I believe it is a Toshiba drive :?:
Part # ZA2431P03 Serial # 2LCHA054354 TB7-A
model # UJDA720

(this information taken from drive it'self)

Is there a fix for my problem?
I heard in another forum something about the 45 and 47 pin???

All I have on this is the female part that goes into the computer..

any information would be very helpful..
and I hope that someday I can be useful on the site too..

When you say that you pull it out and push it back in do you turn on the computer after it's out, turn off the computer and push it back in and then restart your computer? If not, try doing that and see if the drive is recognized as new hardware.

Your IDE cable should be a 40 pin connector. The UJDA720 is a Panasonic which is a DVD-ROM/CD-RW.
