For right now I hooked up another computer for him to use. I am going to hook this one up so I can figure it out without him needing to use it. Keep the ideas coming...I'm trying everything. Thanks for all your help. So appreciated!

try the live Linux disk ,if it runs and works then you at least know it not a hardware problem

I use Regvac It is available as a trial version and works great. Been using it for about 7 years now and can rely on it.

Bob

wow 7 yr trial version .lol

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

I just stored the software. Will my backup recognize the drive by just hooking it up? When I fix my original, will I have any problems?

no. you shouldn't

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

I used to store software on!!!

No,if you mean you installed the programs on to this drive ,yes if you mean you just used it for storage of the software

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

school should have wiped it before selling it anyway.

Howdy,

I have Verizon Fios. They provided a wireless modem/wireless router that sites in my basement. The wireless connection is pretty week upstairs. I have the modem/wireless router hardwired and bringing a cat5 cable upstairs. Can I add a wireless router to that connection upstairs? That would be a wireless router connected to a modem/wireless router. If not, do I use an Access point?

in my opinion yes ,I use Belkin wireless routers and they can be used as an access point.when you go into the IP setup of the router it will give you the option ,

Where do I find out the information on RAM, ect? I dont know where to find this? Also, how do I know the additional programs listed in the thread will not do damage to my system? Those listed to clean ms config ect....

I dont know, I just like XP...maybe we can make progress..Guys thanks for the help.

first let me say we do not recommend program that will harm your computer.
as for cpu-z install it and go to SPD section along the top.and it will give you the info on the ram, click slot#1 to change from one slot to another to check to see ram in all slots

caperjack, I took out the small battery for 30 min ..is this the BIOS(CMOS) reset?
Thx

ok, yes, sorry i thought you meant you got into cmos and reset. you didn't say you remove the battery in any of your post ,
sounds to me like you have a hardware problem ,did you try removing the ram and hard drive to see what happens when you boot ,
also maybe the screen is dead and things are being displaied just not showing on screen ,if you have a external monitor you could try hooking to it ,maybe something will show on screen

1. I have a Dell XPS 400.
2. The original RAM was 2x512MB equalling 1GB total not sure what company it is made by or what the speed of it is.
3. The new RAM is Corsair Gaming Memory it is desktop memory, and is 1x2GB DDR2 800MHz and is compatible with Dell, HP, and Gateway desktops.

I have my new RAM working, but I wanted to know if I could get it to work at the same time my old RAM is in the computer so I could have 3GB of RAM instead of just 2GB

use the program in Suspishio post and it will tell you who made your old ram and what speed it is that was hi reason for linking the program to help answer your questions ,and solve the reason for the old and the new not working together

giving that the win7 install is/should be only a beta copy ,and meant for testing purposes only, there should be no important data on the laptop, so just reinstall win7

to make sure computer doesn't reboot on bsod ,right clcik on mycomputer go properties/advanced /startup and recovery/system settings , and uncheck automatic restart

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

when inside the computer case make sure to un-plug it from the wall power source [should have mention this before ]
i suggest you remove hard drive and taking it with you when you go to buy one ,only 4 screws + the cables to do so ,usually 2 screws on either side ,you will need to remove other side of the case to get at the other 2 , or just take the tower to comp repair shop and have one installed .
it sounds like it a ATA 160 gig, i think the info is on that big sticker on the front of the tower

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

Aha.
Hopefully someone will be able to identify the correct one..

I kept getting a message that said my virtual memory was low after about 2 hours after I attached the usb.?

virtual memory is setup by windows on the hardrive for the cpu to use when all the ram memory is being used ,virtuall memory is slower than Ram so for best results you really don't want to get into useing virtuall memory ,so increasing the amount of ram is best fix for this error ,
,the error message can be stopped by increasing the size of the virtual memory windows uses ,windows usually set this itself, but the size can be increased manually ,it may also indicate the hardrive is getting full

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

Ok, with the white plug off the hard drive and the pc started I get a screen with a blinking cursor.

so that means it went past the big E screen and is blinking because it cant find the harddrive ,the wide gray one is data transfer cable ,remove it from the harddrive and the end going to the motherboard ,and plug it back in ,just to make sure its getting a good connection.
plug power back into hard drive and boot again

Now's where it's going to get tricky. I can make them work, but I don't know what makes them work.

I've never opened a computer in my life. But I'm a willing learner. Is there a diagram here somewhere or is it pretty simple? I've seen it done and know it is, I'm just a bit timid.

I did unplug everything from the computer tonight and try to reboot and I also unplugged it from the wall and rebooted.

I knew I shouldn't have bought that usb when I did it. Dumb move. I've already trashed it.

opening is easy should be 2 screws on the right hand side when looking from the back and side cover should just slide off with a bull towards the back ,all are different of course !

did you have any problem with the usb device when you first installed it .
open side case

i already scanned with McAfee and no virus was found, so i suppose the virus is -removed- but my OS is already damaged and need to reinstall to fix it right?

Damaged is not the correct word to be using ,words like Corrupt ,infected are better ,and just because you scanned with McAfee doesn't mean its clean ,as McAfee ranks in the bottom 10 or 20.if you want to spend some time with a pro ,and remove all with a varity of software scans check out the virus section of this forum ,

I took everything extra off of it first thing. Just left keyboard and mouse. I've always kept it pretty dust free but I'll do as you suggest, too.

The fans sound as though they are turning really well, and I haven't noticed any difference in noise or pitch.

Could the usb have caused any problems? It's a new acquisition and I (unwisely, I'm sure) didn't spend much on it and it's from overseas. It's only been on a week.

I just have a horrible feeling the hard drive is gone and I don't understand how. It was running so well after the restore.

Thank you for your advice.

ok, open box and unplug hard drive ,see if it goes past the bios screen to another message like missing OS, also remove keyboard and mouse ,they can cause it to lock up,
not sure if usb device caused it ,shouldn't ,
notice you buy cheap ,[ overseas usb, E-machine ]cheap always leads to problems in my opinion ,

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

uh ok i have a few questions about the virus.

ok

will they have access to my data? password etc.

quick answer is yes ,if that was there intent

will they have access to my computer?

quick answer is yes ,if that is there intent, and you will never know for sure if you got it all cleaned .

I agree with adamsappleone ,save data if you have any worth saving and format and reinstall windows

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

Hi, first thing i would do is open the box ,and make sure all fans and
heat sync's are clear of dust ! also remove the external harddrive and the new usb hub and try booting

Yup i can bud......

But it seems logical that i could alter the file that the setting is in that brings up 'CLOSE PROGRAM' and instead have it open Task Manager (c:\My Briefcase\Task Manager) instead..

ok, it wold be in the registry somewhere, not sure where !had a quick look ,but i am using xp, but if you right click the program you could create your own key combo to open the device manager in my briefcase.like alt+ctrl+home

edit - you could look i your registry [not in my xp] in this general are
"Hive: HKEY_CURRENT_USER
Key: Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System " ,looking for close program or something like that,
sorry i cant find any reference to it for win98 on Google or don't have any computer with 98 on it anymore

i did change the PSU, memory, processor and HD drive and still its dead,

hi, except for the psu ,none of the things you changed are actually needed to make a computer TURN on,[not completely bootup but turn on ]sounds to me like a dead motherboard

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

ok, try unplugging all drives and mouse ,keyboard and turn it on see what happens,if same thing remove ram and try ,same thing ,remove it all from the compaq box and set it up on the table and try it outside the box, maybe a short between motherboard and the box
