did you try it with just one of the new sticks in !
caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague
did you try it with just one of the new sticks in !
Doesnt matter tho, they dont make the socket types anymore for my MB... Upgrade MB here i come! ahhhhhhhhhhhh :(
I thought you new that ,I thought you were just looking for the biggest cpu the old board would take, without buying a new board .
You will likely need a new power supply ,new video card[unless it has onboard video] ,new Ram ,as the new boards will not take you old stuff ,except maybe the power supply if it has enough wats!
you processor or video card maybe overheating ,open the case and make sure all fans and heatsinc are free of dust/dirt .
maybe the click here link is just that a link to your browser and not a specific web page.
If you just put you cursor over the link it should show the site address
your welcome ,good to HEAR it worked
common sense prevails ,sound codex of course
I saved the download to desktop...do I just run it now and it will install itself?..
yes you have to click on it to install it .
try combofix ,download it to desktop and run in safe mode ,get it here ,
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix#restore
you don't need to do the windows recover install but its a nice feature ,
another tip. I never shut off system restore until after i clean computer in case something happens when removing junk,a bad restore is better than no restore !
sounds like codex problem,
try this player to see if it works, http://www.videolan.org/vlc/ ,if it works then you need dvd codex for media player ,did you get dvd player software with the dvd player when you bought computer ,like power dvd or some other software ,if so try install or reinstall it .
system restore !!!
you just cleaned a computer of nasties ,you should not have a old restore point! you should have shut off system restore and then turn it back on to rid restore of all nasties .you say restore didn't work ,if you ran the restore and set it to a past point ,you may have reinfected the computer after all your hard work
I'm running Windows XP Media Player 11. I have sound from Music CD's and other sources but DVD's play with no sound. Any suggestions?
Also...when I put in a music CD it brings up the Itunes site and plays there by default.
first ,for the default player ,go to my computer ,right click on the cdrom icon and go to tools /auto run anf there you can set the program you want to play music cd's .
are the dvd in question made by you or are they rental dvd's
Do you reckon I should install the IE8 now or...? Which one would you reccomend?
And, by the way, I just did a Spybot scan and deleted all the items shown.
Thanks for everything.
Tony;)
P.S. As for the IE7, not really sure how to go about it.
giving your computer specs,a little low ,I would install IE6 and stick with it .IE7/8 is a big software update for a older computer like yours .that is unless it was install first thing after a fresh install of winxp .only my opinion !!
If you want it just for the tab features ,use firefox for that ,and IE 6 for things that need IE
My definition of "pain" is exactly this: it's really annoying when I forget that I have more than one tab open, and then if I close any it shows an error and closes down. I have unistalled IE7 a number of times and then reinstalled it. The odd thing is that apparently the whole thing gets back, not to mention the Favourites and Bookmarks, which are all there. It's like I never uninstalled it. And mind you that it takes a good while until the whole download, installation and setting-up conclude.
CPU Speed - (Processor x86 Family 6 Model 14 Stepping 8 GenuineIntel ~1466 Mhz(
Amount of RAM - 448 MBI have got Spybot indeed, but am not sure what I can delete or not - I do check the descriptions and all that; but am afraid of causing some malfunction. Would it be safe to eliminate what the Spybot detects? How could I eventually tell the right from wrong?
Thanks a lot for your precious help, you're showing me the way...
Tony:icon_redface:
i remove all that spybot finds ,always did ,and never had any problems ,its usually only tracking cookies, if you do a regular weekly scan .
and you problem with ie7 are just the more than one tap thing !
Thanks for your advice anyway. I have had it for a long time as well. The thing here is that some stuff from within MS Office applications won't work on Firefox, I'm afraid.
Hugs.
Tony:icon_mad:
ok,you say ie7 was a pain, what is you definition of a pain ,what problems were you having with it .I don't use it myself ,but do install it on used computers that i sell ,as i thing its best installed on a clean install of windows xp.
what are the specs of you computer ,ie: CPU speed ,amount of ram ect ect .
you say you did everything to you knowledge ,did you do a trojan/spyware scan .
Spybot search and destroy is a good scanner to start with .get it if you don't all ready have it .at www.filehippo.com
Will an Apple iBook G4 be able to write to DVDs and if so burn an ISO image to them?
only if it has a burner!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I don't know if it would recognize a ISO ,mac and windows are like apples and oranges,DIFFERENT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
go to microsoft.com and download a little file named 'safedisc" to your deasktop-run it. maybe it work wont hurt to try it.howard
he doesn't have a dvd burner ,what could safedisc possibly do for him !
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SafeDisc
That's most likely the case. Ill attach a picture of my drive. Is there a way I can burn a DVD without buying a new one?
no, sorry its a dvd rom,it will only read dvd's ,not burn them,
ROM =Read Only Memory
Yes, i can burn pictures, music, and ISO images to a CD-R disk.
ok,that leads me to think its not a dvd burner ,a search of the make you have listed in a earlier post says its a Aopen,52x cd-r ,16x dvd combo ,and that means its a cd burner and a dvd player ,not a dvd burner .that why its not working !
check it out .
http://www.directron.com/com52321.html
it is safe to delete all files in the prefetch folder ,might get rid of the error .
make sure you set the eide to master ,and set boot order in the bios ,making the sata bottable before the ide drive .
i postting a old thread here might have some infoe of interest in it .i have never done what you are trying to do so have no on hands experience with it .
http://www.daniweb.com/forums/thread10331.html
so run the chkdsk and get it over with ,right click on the harddrive icon in mycomputer and go to properties/ tools and check to do a chkdsk and fix errors ,reboot computer ,don't hit a key let it run run the check disk
IsoBuster didn't work. It just said "No media present". I updated my IDE ATA/ATAPI Controller: SiS 5513 IDE UDMA Controller. That didn't work. My AOPEN COM5232/AAH PRO firmware is up to date (R.1.08). I have no idea what to do.........
have you tried to burn other stuff non ISO file , like music or pictures to a regular cd-r disk and not a dvd disk , to see if the burner actually works
I have tried to do it on 2 other computers. It still won't work, so I don't think it's the burner.
as i said before i do believe its not a dvd burning program .or it doesn't like our brand of dvd disks we are using ,
you could try isbuster software .
http://www.filehippo.com/download_isobuster/
download mozilla's Firefox browser .better that that piece of shit IE anyway .
http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/
No, windows explorer and every other program I use, including ISO Recorder, says that there's no disk in. Which program should I use? I have MagicISO. I can't get nero because I have dial-up, so that would take forever. I checked my drive firmware. It's completely up to date. Also, another detail I left out: whenever I put the disk in, Windows slows down a lot.
something wrong with the burner then, it needs medical attention soon !
but whenever I try to burn an ISO image or any type of file onto it, it says that it's not in.
.i just installed and ran that program its my opinion that it doesn't burn images to dvd's just cd.as it say the dvd is not usable ,but the blank cd is usable .
do you get this far,in the recorder section its says weather the dis is usable or not .
http://humbletrader.blogspot.com/2005/12/iso-recorder-burning-iso-images.html
now if i could just follow my own advice for my personal computer i wouldn't be hear at 4am backing up s-hit,before this hdd crashes and while im doing my income taxes .
yeah but then you get a C and a D , not one large one
the best way to have It, one for OS and one for storage/backup , when windows OS gets corrupt you don't loose all the important data ,just format c:\ and reload windows
if you format the 137 ,you can get the use of the rest of of the 500 by going to management tools in the maintenance section in the control panel and using the disk management section to format the rest of the drive . or just type this into run , compmgmt.msc
so if you click on the icon can you disconnect and refresh the wireless list and pick yourself if others appear in the list, and try again
Okay, cool.
Is it possible without the restore CD?
no, you will need the recovery disk .
but if you are giving it away just format it and let the new owner worry about getting windows but on it .
to format it go to www.bootdisk.com and get a win98 boot disk and run fdisk
more info on the problem will help ,like what happens and when !
are the drivers install ,dose wifi show in device manager ,do you get the option to chose a connection ,is there a switch on the laptop to turn on and off wifi!some have them !
the one thing that will cut the price you get for it is, the DEAD battery .because its not portable anymore.
the virus is brand new and dosen't even have a name yet...
lol
my dad decided to restart the compy... completely f***ed up... cant start, took it to circut city and various local computer genuises and from what they tell me its f****d they say its happened once before to some unfrotunate soul...they say whatever virus it was completely wiped out the entire hard drive
how can that be ,in the last post you say you were running virus scans !
did they all try and sell you a new computer !
try winsockfix to reset the default network settings in windows .
http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/Network-Tweak/WinSockFix.shtml
and i really do love this computer and would like to make it work but i dont know how this is gonna happen with the problems i am having
;
take it to someone who know how to fix computers ,there are a few outthere
Are there any concerns that I should have by not using both chips?
i cant answer that for sure as i am old school still and haven't used or even taken a dual core system apart yet .a quick google search i did ,says ,not necessary to have 2 ,but you would be better with 2 .
with the winxp cd in the drive and the drive set to first boot [in the bios] go to the recovery console and hit R for repair ,and at the prompt run "chkdsk /r " with out the quotes ,and there is a space between , /and R .
mostlikely cause is a driver conflict .could also be a ram problem
the new account worked and im running spybot and its finding crap left and right
great to hear the new account idea! worked for you
So does anyone have input on generic memory as in how it preforms compared to name brand? .
You won't notice any difference .i use generic in a lot of computer i build and sell
go to control panel/users ,and`create a new account ans see what happens
These are some of the things I do every day is to clean out unused and cookies and build up from surfing etc and i did a defrag even tho my pc analized defrag to see if it was needed and it said it wasnt needed. I seems like it is my isp not the pc itself. Because when I do speed tests it seems my download and upload speeds are slower then they should be. Is there something I can do to speed this up or do I have to call them to have them check this? What happens is when I am surfing it takes much longer then it should to change web sites and this has been worse lately then in the past.
problems with 8 year old laptops and todays internet is all the software that the internet pages use to play music stream video and so on .if you really want to use the lapt top to surf at higher speen then you will need the added ram to do so! i have 2 old laptops and surf fairly well ,but reall don't use them much and when i do its just to read news papers .
I'm not sure we can blame Dell.
Probably the same people who don't know how to use the first drive.:)
LOL.
Gotta love Dell,And I come across so many people who have no idea how to use there second HD drive .
i am thinking that it could be that agp 8x bandwidth was compromised because of the pci-e 16x videocard slot which is why the errors that are coming up are video card related but the thing is i just got that video card also so it really surprised me when it started happening that could also mean that my videocard i had before wasnt a problem
to me this statement means its the Game ,to much for your video card and agp slot setup ,
Edit : I just did a search of the board ,you have both pc1-e and agp slots ,then i reread your statement ,and now it makes sence you ahd pci-e before ,so why did you change ,were you getting same error with it as now .
ok it was late and I wasn't thinking as clearly as I should have been, the quote above is what lead me to believe there may be a virus involved.
been there done that! and when i read what you read over and over ,i now see why you come to a virus conclusion ,you maybe right .
I have a Dell Dimension 9100 that wont boot. When I boot to the restore CD it goes along until it gets to the page where you could repair or reinstall windows. Up to that point the keyboard works. As soon as it gets to that page the keyboard stops working and the numlock light goes out. Of course Dell decided not to put anything as useful as a PS/2 port on this computer so I only have USB ports to deal with.
can you boot into the bios ,and check to make sure its set for legacy usb devices ,
