As with anything, it depends what your revenue model is. Do you plan on selling advertising? Monthly subscriptions? If you're selling a product or service, what is your conversion rate? Since you're posting in the Advertising Sales Strategies forum, I assume that revenue is generated by selling advertising. Do you …

I am going to go out on a limb and assume that you manage your site yourself, possibly on a shared hosting account. Work with a systems administrator at your hosting company to buckle down your server. Explain to your host that it is in their best interests to devote …

Check out their portfolio. Often, different dev/design firms cater to different types of clientele. Some are better at eCommerce sites while others are better at social media communities, for example. Price around. There are millions to choose from nowadays and they all want your business.

People are naturally going to link to inner pages ... individual articles, blogs, stories, etc. on your site. If you're going to buy links for the sake of them appearing natural, you would buy links to inner pages. However, this is a rather black hat strategy.

Asynchronous JavaScript doesn't slow down the webpage from loading. Synchronous JavaScript pauses page rendering wherever the JavaScript is on the page, and executes the JS right then, before continuing to render the rest of the page.

If you are talking about the toolbar, Google doesn't really update the Google PR toolbar anymore, and when they do, it's not entirely acccurate.

I have no clue what you're asking. Do you use both Google Webmaster Tools and Google Analytics?

I'm attaching this file as an attached .zip. From now on, do that instead of pointing users to off-site files, because what inevitably happens is a few months down the line you take them off of your server for whatever reason, and then this tutorial gets broken.

There was a long discussion about this in Area 51 over the past week, but I forgot to make the public announcement. To copy & paste what was written there:
The main problem that I do have with our reputation system is, as Sanjay put it, that it feeds …

Not just annoy the search engines -- but annoy the end-users too. Browsers bookmark pages based on page titles. Social media sites like Twitter and Facebook use the page title as the default anchor text when liking/sharing/tweeting. It's confusing if people think they're going to one page but end up …

Google's Farmer/Panda update, which was rolled out to the US on February 24th, and affected us, has been rolled out to all English-language queries yesterday afternoon. We were hurt even more. Still, surprised to not hear ANY stories of ANYONE recovering. Anyone else blasted?

I consider traffic benchmarking checking up with sites like Quantcast.com, Compete.com, to see how your traffic compares against your competition. Of course it's not really accurate, but eh :) Google Analytics also includes a benchmarking feature, as Spletnapot pointed out.

You should be able to add a line to your .htaccess file that checks the referer address for an image, and deliver a 403 access denied error if it's not from your own domain.

Engage the community. Give them a reason to want to interact. Seed the forum with questions that are just begging to be replied to. Get your friends to post and get discussions -- and debates! -- going amongst you.

When you started the thread, you entered keywords into the part where it said Tags. However, as a fairly new member to the community, you can only enter tags that are already in the system. You can't add your own new words.

No, they wouldn't. You would need to use [icode]<strong>Some text in here</strong>[/icode] You can then code that strong tag however you want You can even do [icode]strong { font-weight: normal; }[/icode] so that it will have SEO weight but it won't look bold to the website visitor.

I don't believe the IP address of the server affects SEO. However, the domain extension does. For example, .co.uk emphasizes targeting people in the UK, etc. You can also go to Google Webmaster Tools at www.google.com/webmasters/ where you can specify a country to target.

Vernon caught that screenshot while I was in the middle of updating the page. You can now use radio buttons to select which one you want to go with.

I've heard really good things about Mambo (http://www.mamboserver.com/) and I've also heard really good things about Drupal (http://www.drupal.org/). Both are open source. Drupal has SEO friendly URLs out of the box. I'm not sure about Mambo. I found a review of Mambo on DevShed => http://www.devshed.com/c/a/Administration/Mambo-Open-Source-Content-Management-System
