Bochs, perhaps?

I've used Bochs under Linux with varying degrees of success (it's a little slow). But, if there's not a suitable Wine solution for you, then Bochs would be your next hope.

Just out of curiosity: is it personal choice, or some kind of need keeping you on BeOS? It's a really neat OS, but with such little support now a days, I don't think I personally could use it and be productive.

You'll likely want to create a departmental mailbox, and then share the calendar associated with the mailbox. I don't have any specific information, but I know that would be the general approach.

alc6379 120 Cookie... That's it Team Colleague

well this is surely unfair. you cannot be penalised just coz ur using the home stuff. i think that every software that comes into the market should be able to run on ALL os that are already on the market.

Why? Why should an OS intended for HOME use be able to serve web pages? Get XP Pro for that, or get Server 2003. Or better yet, dual boot with Linux/BSD.

If you know you're going to be serving web pages, you should know what OS you'd need. Just because you can run IIS or some other webserver on a 9x system doesn't mean you should. It will be full of security holes, and it's bound to be unstable.

It's like saying, "Sure, I might be able to pull a boat with a Yugo, but is that going to be the best choice to do it?"

Why not try it on a different COM port, like 3 or 4?

This is just me, but I usually try to set internal software modems to something higher than 2, so they don't interfere with COM ports that might actually be there.

alc6379 120 Cookie... That's it Team Colleague

Silly question:

Are you connected to the Internet when you try this? You do need to be if you plan to activate online... That's the same behavior I got when I tried to activate XP before adding in all of my network information (Gateway, IP Address, DNS servers, etc)

That should work just fine. Are you running FAT32? If so, you can always go in with a DOS bootdisk and a text editor to fix the boot.ini file if you have somehow messed it up.

I've seen it many times on here. You would think that some people would realize there is no need for a forum if you simply tell people to look on google. I guess it's just they don't know how to do it. The point of a forum is to help people.

EXACTLY. The point of a forum is to help people, not do their homework for them. Every single person that's posted something about round-robin scheduling is simply regurgitating some assignment they've been handed, and they want us to do it for them. Suggesting they search Google in this case is as much help as any.

Is doing their homework for them helping? No. It will just add to their dependancy on others, and that will produce crappy coders, crappy code, and no one will benefit. Narue is exactly right-- a search for this algorithm on Google took seconds, and I don't even need to understand Java or the algorithm to simply cut and paste something I found, which is what these people are basically asking for us to provide.

Hey there

A great PDA that is easy to use is the Dell Axim X30, it runs on Windows 2003 mobile which means that it is works well with a Windows desktop. You can use drag and drop for placing files on the unit, it has Windows media player as well that means that it can play the likes of mp3's it also has internet explorer. I have been very impressed with mine

I'll second that. I own an Axim X3, and it works awesomely! The X30 is like the X3, but faster, and it has wireless connectivity built in.

I don't normally say this, but...

Hello! i have a powermac 7200/90 machine which i bought in 96, i was thinking of using it as a web host. Suggestion anyone i'm all ears...

That's an "okay" machine, actually:

http://lowendmac.com/ppc/7200.shtml

You shouldn't have any problems shoehorning Linux on there, and using the BootX loader to load it all up. Since it's a PCI Mac, you can even think about installing a 10/100 NIC in it to supplant the built-in 10BT NIC that you're stuck with otherwise. It's just been my experience, but the NICs from those machines are pretty slow, but YMMV.

the same Layout is one thing, the same internal spec is another.

It's possible you might not ever get it to work. I'm not incredibly up on USB vs PS/2 connections/controllers, but it would seem that the keycodes might be different or something, but the software just won't recognize your keyboard as being one.

Could you just take the USB model from the other system, and swap with the PS/2 keyboard? That would be the most straightforward thing FWIW.

Perl's actually a scripting language for a number of platforms. It might have its roots in Unix, but it has been extended to work with Windows, Pre and Post OS X Macs, and it even works on DOS, Amigas, and BeOS. There are tons of other platforms, too!

Just so you know, you can use Perl to do application development, just like you can do with Python, another scripting language. I don't know about how quick it is for doing it, or whether you'd want to do it, but I know it can be done.

Same problem , I did what you said but no luck, so I bought a souncard and now no probs.

My friend said he already had such problems with the realtek chipset because it is so cheap that the MB 's builders wants to get the maximum profit so ----

I would agree with you. In this particular case, I'm thinking the sound jacks might be bad, or the chipset on the board went belly-up.

I realised its not MSCE! :( he has a hardware certification though! However i still feel that socket A would be a bad idea - mainly as most customisation options and indeed most people i know have gone for socket 754 and 939 over socket A. Personally I play a Lot of Hardware intensive games so given the choice I would still say a sempron. Interestingly -> I have seen a report of a DFI lanparty motherboard (754) with a sempron 3100 and a mid-level gfx card giving amazing framerates (50+) in Doom III (i think med settings) so thats another reason why i would advise the sempron at the moment! I am using this board myself for a new ath64 3400 (newcastle core - 2.4GHz) based system which is going to be an improvement over my old pII 350MHz.....

That's really interesting stuff that you've mentioned there. I would disagree with you, though-- I don't think that Socket A (Athlon XP, specifically) can or should be discounted just yet from a customization standpoint-- parts are plentiful, and the price is right for making a still respectable system, in my opinion. Sure, it won't be last-week's tech, but those machines will still perform well enough, unless you absolutely crave imperceptably high framerates, and you HAVE to run your games at 1600x1200.

Is this drive set up as the drive where the paging file resides?

That could account for the space consumption. Otherwise, you might want to reformat the drive to regain the space. If you cannot format the drive because it says it's in use, I'd seriously suspect your paging file is on that drive.

I know personally that you can download CD images of Windows XP from MSDN and use them legally, provided you're an MSDN Subscriber (I'm a Universal subscriber, so I should know). But, if your friend has an MSDN Academic license and you don't, you shouldn't be using his software. Additionally, you can make a 1:1 copy of a Windows CD, or you can even copy the i386 folder (the installation files) to a network location or other hard drive, and you'll still be legal, providing you're using the files within the bounds of your licensing agreement.

I know that when you burn the CD correctly from them, it acts just like a retail CD, and you should be able to boot directly to it. If your BIOS is configured correctly, and it doesn't boot, you must not have burned it correctly.

Hi everyone,

Here we go again

Narue you seem to be nothing but a java sceptic and keep on calling me a troll.

Narue you said "It's impossible to write an operating system completely in Java. If you knew half of what you pretend to then you would realize this."

I have said this probably a dozen times to you that only the overlying gui on top of the kernel of an os can be written in java.

And most people usually write the kernel in asm, i have even seen one in pascal but that's quite rare, or c++. People tend to avoid the kernel writing part using c++ because it is incredibally hard but it is possible.

Sometimes i tend to wonder Narue if you have any programming experience at all and that goes for you to 1o0oBhP.

Your Sincerely

Richard West

Okay, this post was needlessly stabby, if I may say so. If you've looked anywhere through the forum, you'd see that Narue and 1o0oBhP both know a thing or two about programming, not that they need any defense.

What about Linux, a *BSD or any major UNIX? They're done in a combination of C and ASM, if I'm not mistaken.

But, why would you have to start at the overlying GUI? I'm not incredibly up on Java, but couldn't you just as well do the predominance of the userspace in Java? I'd imagine that if you built the VM into the kernel (or the …
