Greetings theon,

Welcome to DaniWeb. I have read your post, and overviewed the information. I was wondering which part of the code process you are struggling on, so maybe we can help assist your accomplish your task.

Remember for future reference that claiming urgency is very likely to be counter-productive which may reliably get you shunned or flamed.

- Stack Overflow

Indeed. This question looks just like a homework assignment, even.

alc6379 120 Cookie... That's it Team Colleague

hey!!! itsnot my assignment!! i just wanna know!!!anyway!! THANK YOU!!!

Not trying to be hard on you, but...

What are you doing this for? This is really basic, and shouldn't be too difficult. How much do you know about C? What would your "guess" be that you'd do to accomplish this? Post some ideas, or your thoughts, and others will be able to help you out.

alc6379 120 Cookie... That's it Team Colleague

Can you write some pseudo code or something? Just outline what you've thought up in an indented- type format, so you can logically see what you're thinking of. Then, perhaps post that here, and let us help you with specific points of your reasoning.

alc6379 120 Cookie... That's it Team Colleague

I try to solve it plz help me

That's great that you tried. Did you write any code in your attempts? Please post it here, so that we might help you troubleshoot it.

If i was running something like windows 2003 server enteprise edition then could i have web space to sell. Or could i just make my own web site for free. Or is that Os just optimized for serving files over one network.

Well, you could do this. But, if you didn't have a large, fast internet connection, your host would not be any good. There are configuration options in Windows 2003 Server Enterprise edition (I run it on 2 boxes myself) that do allow you to serve multiple websites from one machine.

I went ahead and split your thread out from the other one. Even though you're having a similar problem, your situation might have different conditions or modifiers that may not apply to the original users post. In the future, remember to start your own thread, for the sake of clarity and completeness.

If we're just talking data, not actual program files, dragging and dropping would probably be the best, if not the only way, that you'd want to do it. So long as you're not dragging over program files, or files needed by programs, you'll be in good shape.

alc6379 120 Cookie... That's it Team Colleague

What code have you written so far? Go ahead and post it, and maybe others can help. Even further, if you've even attempted to do any of the things you're asking about, post that, and others will probably help out.

alc6379 120 Cookie... That's it Team Colleague

In case you weren't quick enough to read the Announcement that Dave was kind enough to post, please post some code of your own that you're working on. When you post questions in this manner, it seems that they're homework questions. We're not here to do your homework for you- we're here to help you learn.

Don't get rid of that one. I forget what it does, but it's harmless.

As for the system32 folder, what type of system are you running? I know that certian versions of Audigy sound cards can cause this to occur, but it's fixed with a driver update.

Also, try doing a Google search using the terms "system32" "at startup". I think that Microsoft even released a KB article about that.

alc6379 120 Cookie... That's it Team Colleague

My personal favorite is this one:

www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php

It's searchable, and it's got a large number of entries. If all else fails, consult Google.

I have Hijack This, is there a place anywhere to post the report from this?

Thanks very much in advance.

Yes. Feel free to post an HJT log in our Security forum. :)

With what? You didn't ask a question. What do you want me to do, write you a book on all of the topics you mentioned? Or look into my crystal ball and give you information on the subjects that you need yet didn't deign to specify?

If you're a Windows developer then you know how complex threading, sockets and database programming are, so start using your brain and ask for something specific or you'll get nothing but blank stares and flames.

Now now... be nice.

But, yeah... what are you wanting to know?

Alex, I couldn't agree with you more. But I want everyone to keep in mind that this thread was started only to allay peoples fears of the Draft. I don't know if DaniWeb is the appropriate forum for a political debate, which is where this appears to be heading.

Sure, you're probably right here. I don't think that political discussion is out of the scope of the Geek's Lounge here, but my questions would probably drive this thread off-topic. If anyone's interested in discussing the points I mentioned, PM me, and I can alter or split this thread as needed.

Screwed up how? You should read the WMD report before making a claim like that:
http://www.cia.gov/cia/reports/iraq_wmd_2004/

Also, Afghan is to soon hold it's first democratic elections.

Exactly. I don't want to argue talking points or anything, but most analysts, whether they admit it, or even realize it, tend to have a negative slant (note, I could have said "Liberal", but I didn't). So, to say that we need 3x more troops than what we've got might be like me saying, "Well, I make $12.00 an hour, and I'm making it okay, but BOY, imagine what I could do if I made $36 an hour! SHOO-WEE!"

I'm sure that having 3x the number of troops on the ground would most certainly help, but I feel like things are getting under control, and that much of the public's conceptions about the war(s) are way overblown. Fear of TERRISTS! have made people batty, even congressmen, and they want to rush to do anything to keep those nasty TERRISTS! from blowing up our buildings, and harming our innocents. Some people are level-headed, and others aren't so level-headed. I think that by the landslide that the bill was voted down, it's apparent that the general concensus is that we're doing fine as we are, and though it'd be nice to have more troops out there, we don't imminently need them right now. At least, we don't need them enough to instate the draft.

Personally, I look at it like this. Forgive …

Actually, I'm a LIMS Administrator for a Corporate laboratory. We have 6 NEC VersaliteTablets on a WLAN. There's a stylus missing so I went back to the vender and learned about the high priced plastic pencil. I have been looking for a cheaper work around.

I tried the replacement tips by themselves and they dont work unless they are in the designated pen. Up front the tip and pen appear to be nothing more then plastic. I'm baffled.

It's very possible that the pen itself has some type of RFID-type something or other, or some type of sensor in the pen that detects pressure, relative position to the tablet, etc. There's probably some kind of electronics built into that stylus, as it seems like the type of digitizer (gel/liquid type) that's used in PDAs wouldn't scale very well to a Tablet PC.

alc6379 120 Cookie... That's it Team Colleague

OK since that won't fit my situation I set it up and if anyone else wants the info I will write out the script.

vfs objects = recycle
recycle:repository = .deleted
recycle:keeptree = yes
recycle:versions = yes
recycle:maxsize = 0
recycle:exclude = *.bak/*.tmp

I also only gave myself access to the Deleted folder. It is going to save me time.

If you don't agree thats cool, but thought it may help out others.

Good that you post this for reference.

Don't get me wrong, I think that what you're trying to do is very valid, but I just feel like doing this is giving users leeway to do dumb things, and just give you more headaches in the future. I mean, what happens when they go to delete the file, it goes to the Recycle Bin, and then they empty the bin. Whoops! There you go, scurrying for a tape again!

It just reminds me of the old saying: If you make something idiot-proof, they'll build a better idiot.

Um... this isn't Dell's fault. In fact, when you have a software problem, it's never the manufacturer's fault. Heck, your system is what, 2-3 years old now? If this is when you've started having problems like this, then that's a good track record.

Have you tried some of the suggestions in the sticky threads at the top of the security thread? Specifically, the one entitled Helping Yourself. If that doesn't fix your issue, and you've got spyware, you may as well back up your data, locate your system's original installation media, and reinstall Windows on the machine.

alc6379 120 Cookie... That's it Team Colleague

Have you checked for viruses lately? It's possible that a virus has infected MFC.dll, or something.

Why do you want to go back to FAT16? There's really no good reason to do that. FAT 16 can only support a partition size of 2GB or under.

Do you mean converting from NTFS to FAT32, perhaps? This is not possible, at least according to Microsoft. The only conversion you can do is from FAT32 to NTFS, but not back.

There really isn't a need for the draft right now. Does anyone see a need for one? I'm kind of at a loss to see why we'd need a draft, as there's not really any particular area where we can't handle ourselves, IMHO.

As much as I love America, if a bill like the one you described actually did come to pass, I'd be moving to Japan or something. It's one thing to instate a draft, where people are called up to fight, but what you've described seems a little different. I think the word for that is conscription?

i was thinking about getting an asus motherboard would that be a good choice. and if i ever had the money i would get water cooling(my processor heat is some ridiculous number like 174 farenheit) and a 64 bit processor.

Just an FYI:

There's not a single Dimension system with a 64-bit processor. You will absolutely be unable to overclock that chip in that system, and it wouldn't be to your advantage to try to change out the motherboard. Dell's cases aren't really designed to have their motherboards upgraded. After all, it wouldn't be a Dell anymore-- it'd just be a new motherboard in a Dell case.

alc6379 120 Cookie... That's it Team Colleague

You are trying to develop a technical solution to a social problem. That will not work.

Hear Hear!

The next time a user deletes something they needed, just look at them blankly and say, "Why'd you delete it if you needed it?", and then go out for a smoke, or for a coke, whichever suits you best. If you were facilities management, and someone put an important document through a cross-cut paper shredder, you wouldn't be held responsible for trying to recreate their document.

Education and communication is the way to do it. They need to know that deleting it makes the file "be gone". Your backup tapes are for disasters, not user stupidity. ;)

whats really strange though is with my 'sucky'; se, i can run Call of duty maxed out and Command and Conquer Zero hour maxed out. On 3dmark it says it wont run well but its running perfect on highest possible...anyways, i have 160 dollars now and im getting some more maybe 50 to 100 for a holiday we have for my religion. im tryin not to spend all of my money...so any other suggestions?

I've got an FX5700 LE, 128MB of memory, 256bit memory interface. I can run about the same settings as yours, and I can play the games you mentioned maxed out, and I can also do Unreal 2k4 almost maxed out, but Doom 3 still crawls on anything other than medium at 1024x768. Also, I can do Dawn of War (awesome RTS that just came out, BTW) at 1280x768x32 bit color, and still have a really playable game.

I've been told that the FX5700 LE is on par with the ATI Radeon 9600 Pro, so take that for what you will.

If you can provide any more information, that would be helpful.

Like the other guys have said, that's your "average" computer these days. It's great for everything that's been mentioned. Not only that, but it's good for light 3d gaming, too.

It's one thing to post specs of a system and say, "Is this good?". That's a relative term-- good compared to what? It's not good compared to a Dual Xeon workstation with 4GB of ram, but it screams compared to a 486. What you really need to do is post the specs of a system, post what you want to do with a computer, and then say "Is this good for what I want to do?"

It's very possible that the stylus from the tablet is not just a mere "stick" that you poke to a digitizer-- it might be something pressure-sensitive, or have some kind of electronics in it that allows for different features within the tablet PC.

BTW, how do you like your tablet PC? I mean, do you actually find yourself using the tablet feature often?

Have you just tried plugging the device in and seeing if it works? Also, what makes you say that the drivers you downloaded "won't work"? I've done lots of 2000 driver installs on XP systems with nary a problem. Because for the most part, Windows XP can just be considered a pretty-ed up version of 2000.

Yeah, qt 3.14159 is right on this one. There are some Microsoft programs that you can slipstream into the installer, but there aren't that many I'm aware of.

Personally, I use Ghost when I need to do any system cloning, or if I know I'm going to trash a box sometime down the road, and will need to restore it.

Get over that dislike REAL quick if you're going to get into upgrading your system at all. There's nothing to be afraid of-- just unplug the system before you do anything in it.

If you really play on making any upgrades at all to your system, you're probably going to have your hands in that box all of the time...

im not looking to buy a new card. I just wanna know if the extra ram will make up for it. And will i see a performence boost in my games such as battlefield vietnam?

It might, but not by much. What generally happens is that if your video card can't cut the mustard, then your CPU helps with the load. Honestly, though, for Battlefield Vietnam, a memory upgrade might help, but don't get your hopes up on some dramatic performance increase.

Why can't you upgrade your video card? Is it integrated? Don't want to spend the cash on it? Honestly, I'd hold off on the RAM upgrade, and if you could upgrade it, save up the money for a new video card. I think that's what everyone else is trying to get through to you.

[edit] I looked at one of your other posts, and saw you have a Radeon 9600SE video card. That's not a bad card, so a RAM upgrade might help some. But, again, I want to stress that it's not going to be a HUGE increase in speed, so don't expect an incredible lot out of it. Your game might run more smoothly, but you're not going to be able to up the resolution, or the textures that much. [/edit]

sorry but that didnt answer my ? thx for nuthin

Sorry, but that's kind of rude... Thanks for nothing, yourself.

Narue's advice as dead-on. If you want the latest, greatest thing, fine. Go pay through the nose for it, and then cry when you see that same part in the bargain bin in 6 months because the next latest, greatest thing that you could pay through the nose for has come out.

Like Narue said, buy what you need. Brand new, I recently built a system:

  • Gigabyte GA-7VT600 1394
  • AMD Athlon XP2500 Barton core
  • 768MB PC3200 DDR Geil RAM
  • 16X DVD-ROM
  • 52x32x52 CD-RW
  • 80GB SATA Hitachi drive, 8MB cache, 7200RPM
  • 128MB Nvidia GeForce FX5700 LE 256-bit 8x AGP

...and then I went and added

  • ITE IT8218 IDE RAID controller
  • 2x30GB Western Digital IDE drives in RAID0 for extra storage.

We're talking not more than 6 months ago I built this, and I used last-year's or last year-and-a-half ago's "hot things". I'm VERY happy with the performance of the system, and I probably won't upgrade for a "long time". And the machine's no slouch-- I can play Doom 3 reasonably well on Medium settings at 1024x768, and I can play UT2k4 at 1024x768 at the Highest settings. Then, I can also compile a Linux kernel in a few minutes-- it now takes me longer to configure the kernel than it does to compile it!

But, I'm just one example. I have some gripes with my …

I think Narue sums it up.

Did you read the announcement at the top of the forum about us not doing your homework assignments for you?

alc6379 120 Cookie... That's it Team Colleague

In the spec range that you're asking for, you could probably find a good configuration on eBay for $250-$300.

But MikeAR is right-- you couldn't get a Pentium processor in an iBook, but you can find a 300mhz iBook with 8GB hard drive and 128MB of RAM for about $300 plus shipping easily. However, you won't be able to get the "latest software" on it-- that's a little underpowered to run OS X, which is Apple's latest OS. However, you'd get a great experience running Mac OS 8.6, or even 9.1 on it, and running with the same tools from that "era" (like, Office 97, etc), you'll be in really good shape, and have a nice web browsing experience.

alc6379 120 Cookie... That's it Team Colleague

If you're going to be reinstalling Windows on any of the drives, I'd go ahead and use XP's tools and blow the setup away. The reason I say this is because you'll want to install Windows 98 first, and then XP, as the XP bootloader can then automatically detect the 98 installation and account for it. If you install Windows 98 on the system using the method you described, it will kind of "throw a wrench in the works", as it might overwrite XP's bootloader and render XP unbootable.

What type of system do you have, anyways? You might be able to do without that "recovery" partition, as it might just contain diagnostics on certain machines.
