Topic Question is "yes."

As to the question in the topic, while that is yes, it's never recommended as once in a while there is trouble when mixing.

As to the question in your text, you won't know till you try it.

A few issues.

  1. JavaDB doesn't appear to be distributed any longer. I'm reading https://blogs.oracle.com/java-platform-group/deferring-to-derby-in-jdk-9 which was in 2015 so I'll write JavaDB is no more.

  2. https://db.apache.org/derby/docs/10.0/manuals/admin/hubprnt09.html gives us a clue that we may want to search for hosting for Tomcat. Such should be able to run Derby as well.

  3. If I search for "Tomcat on the cloud" I find various offerings.

The VM "file" should be easy to move then open it later with VirtualBox.

For over a decade we packaged up development kits plus the OS for setups that we didn't/couldn't keep around.
Imagine to build an image for a single board computer system where you used DOS, Windows 3.11, Linux (old version.) How else could we keep this intact for over a decade? Answer: VirtualBox.

If I were to look into this I would not convert such as this would be a lot of work duplicating what looks to be BITCOIN MINING.

Instead I'd see what BITCOIN LIBRARIES might be out there and then craft around said libraries found with
https://www.google.com/search?&q=php+bitcoin+mining

Creating the functions that we see in your Python code (remember I always think this is your code you wrote and not found code) would be quite the exercise for you.

Small world. A client wanted a clean install of Windows 7. They had the right DVD with SP1 but so many things don't work now. This is truly a version of Windows you can forget about.

Why not move up to W10? You can get the install media for 32 and 64 bit for free and you don't need to activate it. About all I find that is annoying with non-activation is you can't easily change the wallpaper.

PS, Virtualbox supports 64 bit. Read https://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/16946 as that old complaint is kicked around again.

rproffitt 2,701 https://5calls.org Moderator

It's been a while since I installed an OS to VirtualBox. But setup of a VM is widely written up on the web.

What stopped you now?

rproffitt 2,701 https://5calls.org Moderator

Maybe you could try an AutoHotKey system like AutoKey ( https://github.com/autokey/autokey ) to make what you want.

Ever used macros and apps like AutoHotKey? Much easier than a year or two under the Linux hood.

rproffitt 2,701 https://5calls.org Moderator

Even in Windows you can't do this in all apps and the system. For now because "how we got here" many apps such as plain text editors, filenames and more may be limited to ASCII (8 bit.)

If some app does allow UNICODE then there are articles/tutorials for you:
https://duckduckgo.com/?q=type+unicode+in+linux+tutorial

rproffitt 2,701 https://5calls.org Moderator

I will have to guess again you need a quick recap of "how did we get here."

It all began long ago with the Typewriter then the Teletype Model 33. The binary code behind characters and computers was ASCII for the longest time.

The accents you ask about have never been called SUPERTEXT by anyone but hey, you clarified. To get to other character sets we are now using UNICODE and such. Any decent Word Processor (for Linux try LibreOffice) lets me select such with ease.

rproffitt 2,701 https://5calls.org Moderator

I don't get the point. While I know of super and sub-script, I googled SUPERTEXT and well, what is it?

My advice (repeat and expanded follows.

  1. Get the BIOS up to date or the last update.
Remember I can't give you a step by step because such changes with makes, models and time. Work with Lenovo or those that support you where you are if you can't do it yourself.

  2. While you did fine with the pictures there are still submenu items unexplored. Yes this would be something I could look through quickly if I had this PC on my desk or at a coffee shop but here it's a forum so we work with what we have.

  3. Maybe this is too much work. Start shopping for a better machine. I know this class of PC/laptop and VirtualBox will grind along and will upset almost all users I know today.

I hope you can supply images of the BIOS sub menus so I or others can see if the setting is there. I know a lot of folk that want "exact" matches on text so you're not unique here. All it means is we'll have to see whats' in the sub-menus.

I'll use the model as "T500 2241" but there is no document found by me that shows the BIOS menu contents. It's time for you to look in the submenus and if they are foreign to you, share images so we can point out which setting.

If there is no virtual or other VT-x setting then it's time to look for a BIOS update. It's not possible for me to give you a direct link or a step by step. My rule on BIOS updates is simple. I never write how. I only write to follow the maker's instruction since my instruction will become dates over time and I don't want to have to find all the times I wrote about this and correct them. So where is that BIOS? Read STEALTHTH's reply at
https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-T400-T500-and-newer-T-series-Laptops/Can-not-find-my-models/m-p/127160?page=1#127367

rproffitt 2,701 https://5calls.org Moderator

You have the laptop. So you could have dived deeper into the BIOS menus. Again you have the laptop and as such have it all over us here.

It looks as if you'll have to find support at Lenovo (yes you have to pay as it's so out of any warranty) or try Lenovo forums.

That information (last post) might be useful at a Lenovo forum but here I do not keep archives on PC products. It's a shame this discussion is this long but your lack of information and skipping supplying details means we are at an impass.

rproffitt 2,701 https://5calls.org Moderator

In your case since you can't share the information asked for maybe it's time to take it to a shop or a friend that does PC support.

The images are incomplete. They would need to show all the BIOS menu and sub menu options to see where the setting of interest is. Once in a while I'll find someone that says a setting isn't there but they had yet to explore the sub-menus.

Again I ask:

  1. Tell us the full model by sharing a link to this model (not the series but the exact model) at Lenovo.com.
Why? Because the details so far don't point to the exact model. You have owned this and would have this data.
  2. Share the sub menu content because without the exact model and user manual (may not exist) I can't guess the exact menu/submenu item by exact name to change. This is not unusual because some folk don't know that a BIOS entry for something can have variations in naming.

Maybe this laptop just doesn't support VT-x. I always like to give it my best try but you haven't been able to supply the details required to find out if it's possible with a BIOS setting or update. We know the Core2Duo CPU supports VirtualBox but that's not enough. The BIOS, setting and Host OS must as well. Then you run into limitations of what you can do on a forum.

rproffitt 2,701 https://5calls.org Moderator

(Think Ghostbusters) There is no T500 there is only Zuul.

The T500 is a series. Unfortunately I can't decode which T500 model is is even with the Speccy. All the T5x0 models I found at Lenovo have a BIOS update which could be why you didn't find the settings. OR you are looking for "VT-X" and not looking at what else this has been called over the years.

At this point I ask you to supply a link to your exact model at Lenovo.com

rproffitt 2,701 https://5calls.org Moderator

I don't see anything like VT-x in my BIOS setup.

That's true. I read https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/solutions/ht500006 again and VT-X is not shown. It's called by it's other names.

There's a chance the BIOS is very out of date. Let's check your Speccy report for that.
Yes, the BIOS seems out of date. https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/us/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/thinkpad-t-series-laptops/thinkpad-t520/downloads/ds018810-bios-update-utility-for-windows-8-32-bit-64-bit-7-32-bit-64-bit-vista-32-bit-64-bit-xp-thinkpad-t520-and-t520i might be your model.

Sadly you don't seem to be engaged in this discussion. You need to feedback more and not leave us guessing this is some Thinkpad. I usually can figure it out with a Speccy but in this case it's elusive so you must tell us.

rproffitt 2,701 https://5calls.org Moderator

Nobody I know tries to get ISO files burned to DVD. There are many reasons why:

  1. Current distros are often too big.
  2. Folk struggle with creation of the media since burning the .ISO file to a DVD is technically incorrect if we wanted to boot said DVD.
Think of this instead: "Create bootable media from the .ISO file." because burning the ISO file to the DVD would be just that.
  3. USB 8GB sticks are plentiful and cheap in most of the world. Also, a lot of PCs don't have ODDs (Optical Disc Drives.)

But here we are: James supplied the best answer above with a step by step to enable VT-x. By your continued posting that is why I worry there is some other issue such as very dated OS (Windows and Linux versions mentioned by you so far.)

rproffitt 2,701 https://5calls.org Moderator

Now that you mention Ubuntu, if the simple change noted by James doesn't fix it, I worry that your current Linux is the issue. Here's why:

Ubuntu Linux 14.04 LTS reaches the end of its five-year LTS window on April 30th 2019 and will no longer be supported by the vendor (Canonical). This means that this version of Ubuntu will no longer receive security patches or other software updates.

It's now 2021 so it's been long enough for you to change up to something newer.

rproffitt 2,701 https://5calls.org Moderator

"Is this enough information to get it done? "

No. I think you want a detailed step by step along with more about this. You ignored my instruction above:
"Be sure to supply the web report link"

Follow my instruction so I can figure out what you have as a PC.

There is a chance VT-x is supported but remember that we don't have what your PC is along with other data so I can't write more than what was shared above.

-> Some good news about this CPU and VT-x at https://ark.intel.com/content/www/us/en/ark/products/37006/intel-core-2-duo-processor-p8700-3m-cache-2-53-ghz-1066-mhz-fsb.html

rproffitt 2,701 https://5calls.org Moderator

My go-to method is for you to supply the web link to a Speccy report. Since Speccy, how to use is easy to find I await your test results. Be sure to supply the web report link as anything else would be too much work for me to decode.

rproffitt 2,701 https://5calls.org Moderator

Let's hope Xozz comes back with more information. KVM might be an option since the Guest OS mentioned looks supported at
http://www.linux-kvm.org/page/Guest_Support_Status

But again, the details matter as to the host OS, etc.

Sometimes I find folk that have never seen a BIOS setup screen and demand a step by step. Or they are on some decade plus PC that has a 32 bit CPU that is not a machine I would try this on.

rproffitt 2,701 https://5calls.org Moderator

That's not an unknown message or much of a mystery. If you were to share the machine's make, model, CPU model, BIOS version and age I might look into this further to see if your PC can turn it on. But for now I'll wait for you to tell more about the PC.

Also, share which Ubuntu version and which flavor along with 32 or 64 bit.

rproffitt 2,701 https://5calls.org Moderator

You left out what happens with your code as is. If the file did not play I add a print statement just before the play statement so I can check out if I got the filename correct. If the filename is good then I print if the file exists to further debug.

Break it down into smaller tasks.

  1. Do you know how to create programs in, using your tags in assembly, c++ and visual-basic for windows? (maybe you should pick one language.)
  2. Once you can create the basic program (many start with "Hello World!") then you can tackle your design (design before code.)
  3. Part of the design would be to look at your requirements and break it down to managable tasks.
  4. Pick that task then code that task.

If you are stuck on a task, then share that code along with what issue you think has you stumped. If you want others to code for you, then state the full design along with the price you will pay.

As long as I dismiss the light and thin models they seem fine. But none can compete with desktops for 100% CPU and GPU load conditions. Eventually the unit will throttle. Are you OK with that? If not, you want a desktop. Not to leave you without names: Acer, Asus, MSI, Dell and others make really good gaming laptops. Again, we dismiss the light and thin models.

rproffitt 2,701 https://5calls.org Moderator

Saidly this is the new cheap as they can make HDD with the USB port right on the drive.
https://3b6tg03su4w72twlokencxn4-wpengine.netdna-ssl.com/wp-content/uploads/wd-4tb-drive.jpg for example.

Last rites:
Does the drive spin? (if not it's dead and gone.)
Does the drive show up in Linux or Windows Device Manager? (if not, it's dead and gone.)

rproffitt 2,701 https://5calls.org Moderator

While it usually the end of said drive, can we have the full make and model number?

Why? Sometimes it's the case that failed but newer (cheaper) models don't have the little adapter board old models had so you have to share the information so others can check that out.

Another reason for it to not show is when the file system is blown. See if it shows in Device Manager or even on a Linux PC.

The no risk method starts with full backups. I'm running into more folk that want to skip this step.

On top of that you almost verify you are about ready to lose "my most important data" since those without any backups are the ones the have such fear. Time to get those backups done so you don't lose what you can't lose.

Finally I want to add that upgrading any OS in place carries a risk even if everything should be fine. All it takes is a random power outage at the wrong moment and blammo. It's gone.

rproffitt 2,701 https://5calls.org Moderator

Maybe, just maybe it's time for a clean install. But what I find at times is the user repeats what they did to cause the issue (if it was user induced.)

Our oldest laptop in the office fleet is about 2008, an old Core2Duo fit with 3GB RAM, SSD and well, who said it was all that great? Anyhow it has a clean install of W10 and when an office worker uses it (don't talk to me about COVID-19 as the office shut down in 2020 and that's another story) but here we are and the users often say it's faster than what they have at home. Most likely it's because of the clean install and SSD.

We also make sure we use a nice DNS. Many IT staffers overlook this free optimization.

Good hunting on this one!

rproffitt 2,701 https://5calls.org Moderator

As to other clients, the answer is no and eventually you find yourself fixing other clients.

I'm sharing what I've found to be issues and did not duplicate what you can find on the web about "emails stuck in the outbox" for this email app. That list is far too long for me to type in here so I didn't. As you are a web developer you know how to research so I'll skip sharing a search URL about that.

-> Another answer to why just this PC is that few PCs are duplicates of one another. Users are free to tweak and more. The email service could have hit some limits on sending that after some time, a reboot the limit is removed and the emails go out. You can't imagine the conversations you hear about folk that want to send hundreds of emails a day on Outlook.com or such.

I take it you completed why I noted so far so it's off to research what others have found as well. The one thing you discover with these issues is it's never the same thing over and over.

rproffitt 2,701 https://5calls.org Moderator

The IT comment is just that. You manage more than the usual so you are the pro here.

Beyond DNS and such. Remember your service may be unreliable. I can't test for that and then we have other issues where folk install Security Suites, set the security to maximum or we fine the suite interferes with normal operations.

in parting be sure the date and time is correct on the PC, routers and such.

rproffitt 2,701 https://5calls.org Moderator

Clues are slim here but try changing to a public DNS, the DNS provided by the service mentioned as well as entering the IP address of the mail server rather than its name. Keep in mind that as you manage over a dozen PCs for an office the words and terms I used here should be familiar. i.e. you are an IT pro.

In regard to "game slows down" that's a great topic in game design.

I can't write at length about this but there are different approaches to getting a game to run at a steady clip. The main one I recall and mind you this was something we worked decades ago was to set a timer as so many times a second and effects, movement and such would be made during each tick of the timer.

If you don't have a timer you run into the problem that it speeds or slows down as you move, fire and more.
