If it were me and I wasn't running out of hard drive space I would be tempted to leave it as it is.

It is not going to harm your PC if you leave it, just create a shortcut to the 64-bit version.

It may be safe to remove the 32-bit version but I don't know so I can't really say, someone else may know but I would leave it for now.

Why would people be taking data from your PC? You could password protect folders or encrypt them. You maybe able to alter permissions of the file and folders if other users of you PC is the issue.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

You could try a linux live cd or Recuva . Did you delete the partiton?

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Is photoshop listed in the 64 bit programs folder?

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

hello,

Do you have a laptop to test if the monitor is working?
Do you have a dedicated graphics card, on board or both? If you have both try removing the dedicated graphics card and try the on board one.

Did you hear any beeps when you turn the PC on?
Does your PC sound like it is booting up as normal?

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

I already have Window 7 Pro and that automatically located all my drivers. My lappy is a HP one and they say they aren't releasing any drivers until window 7 is released.

I suspect that your laptop will get drivers after Windows 7 is released. I think Windows 7 will automatically get most if not all your drivers for you.

Perhaps it would be better to provide links to the pages you saw these items.

It you have question about the products give them a ring, after all if they want a sale they should tell you what you want to know.

From what I understand I think these are base units with mouse & keyboard.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Have you made any hardware changes recently?
Was this message coming up before?

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Does windows begin to load?
Does it say you have to insert a boot medium?

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

hello,

If you have the installation CD you should be able to fix XP using the CD. Your other option is to reinstall XP. You maybe able to retrieve some files using linux incase you can't fix XP.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Just noticed now.

If you know someone who has the RC you can still get the product key.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Hello,

Product keys are still avaliable Windows 7 RC Prod Key. All you need is a hotmail/live account and is free. The RC lasts longer than the beta.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

What graphics card do you have. What is the spec of the other laptop?

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Are you able to scan and save images? (save to disk not use for a program)

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Can you select which device to boot from? On my computer if I press F8 it will ask me what I want to boot from. When the copmuter is switched on look for the boot device key, press it and select CD/DVD drive.

- Let us know how it goes.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Did you uninstall the old drivers and install the drivers for the new card?

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Hello,

I would format the entire drive and leave it without a file system(unallocated space). Then insert your system restore disks and reinstall the OS.

You say that it boots into the unknown partition. -> You need to have a bootable CD/DVD (test in another PC) and the CD/DVD drive at the top of the boot list(Change boot order in BIOS).

- Let us know how it goes.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Are you simply after finding out how to build a PC from scratch?

You would be better off deciding what type of machine you want; do you want a high end one or just a basic one.

What would you be using it for?

Try looking at buildyourown to find out how to build a PC.

I would strongly advise you to research into some products before you decide what to buy. When you look at a product it should tell you what it is compatible with start with the motherboard as everything will be fitting into that.

- hope this helps.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Hello,

Do you have any linux live CD's?

I think OpenSuse's disk may have a restore GRUB option.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

I had a similar problem when my cousin forgot her password and she was the only user. I ended up using Ophcrack and that solved the password problem.

If you don't want anything off the hard drive I think it would be better to have a fresh install of windows, as caperjack said.

- Let us know how it goes.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

I believe the file extension is required.

some acceptable addresses would be:

If someone types -www.mycompany.co.uk/ in the address bar it automatically displays the index.html file. People are used to file extensions in their address bar. Provide links on your website to these other pages and you should be fine.

W3Schools provide good website tutorials, have a look.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Are you using CSS?

Do you want to post the code you are using.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

I don't think getting a new motherboard would be worth it; even if you could find one.

Does the laptop work without the battery?
How full is your HDD?

For now it may be worthwhile turning hibernation off.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

If it cuts out whilst using the CD then It probably is not just the HDD.

Is this a laptop or desktop?

Number 13. in you original post, Does it refuse to start if you don't unplug it first?

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

have you turned file sharing on in the network and sharing center? Do you have firewalls installed? I had to configure my firewall to allow access.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Are you saying you have 2 hard disk drives? If your after formatting your PC use the XP installation CD to format and reinstall windows.
Did you get an identical motherboard to the previous one or is it a new motherboard?

FYI- you shouldn't need to format both disks. If you have something you want on the one without windows on it, it will still work without formating it.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Try using this to detect the name of your graphics card. You'll probably be able to download the drivers via NVIDIA.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

their is a difference between loading and installing. What I am asking is does the PC turn off whilst you are installing from CD Or after the installation begins from the hard drive?

Try a linux live CD to see if there is something wrong with your HDD or if it is something else. If you can boot from the CD then it could be something else other than the hard drive. If the CD works and the PC doesn't shut off it could be a fault with the hard drive.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Are you able to enter the BIOS? try pressing del or F2 at start-up.

Does the computer restart or does it just turn off and stay off?

Do you know if you have a system restore partition or the XP installation disk?

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Did the computer turn off whilst installing XP?
Perhaps there is a problem with the hard drive. Did you reinstall XP because of being unable to boot up?
Can you tell us what the BSOD error is?

There's no need to number each line.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Hello,

If you boot using the CD when you start the installation a partitioning tool should come up during the process. I would create a partition of around 16GB for the installation of Ubuntu and the rest for Swap space.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

perhaps a virtual machine would serve your purpose. How about VirtualBox or Virtual PC.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Try finding the correct driver and install that.

If this doesn't work you may need a new one.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Hello,

Perhaps try reordering your boot order via BIOS.

Put the hard drive with the OS at the top.

If you ever need to boot from another device put that at the top of the list. i suspect that your PC is trying to boot from devices that are higher up in the boot list.

- let me know if it solves your problem.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Given up tryin to fix PC got new Mobo, RAM and CPU. Seems to be working for now.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

You should be okay reinstalling Office then as long as you have the serial number. Is there any other software you need to save?

I think there are some disc image programs that save an image of your hard drive but I don't know if it would work with another system.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

financial data stored on a harddrive should be burned to disk [dvd or cd-r] NOW!!, to be safe and secure

I agree, you shouldn't really keep financial info on your PC, people can steal it over the net. You would be better storing it off your computer.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Have you tried going into device manager and seeing what is there for the network card? It is usually under network adaptors, there maybe an exclaimation mark next to it.

If there is a problem with the network device then you may have to buy a new one.

- Let us know the situation.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

I am a student and get windows 7 for Free. We have to download the windows 7 image and burn it to disc. You'd think microsoft would let people with vouchers have a similar option.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Are you able to open other items(none office) that reside in my documents? Perhaps it would be worthwhile trying OpenOffice or if you have a google email account try using google docs.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

are you saying that the PC sometimes boots from the HDD?

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Maybe their's a prob with the network card. Which OS are you using?

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Do you have the installation CD/DVD?

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

As they will both have different hardware configurations you will have too reinstall windows.

Why not transfer your financial files to external hard drive or maybe use the HP hard drive as a second hard drive making sure you can access the data.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

perhaps your hdd has died. Try putting a bootable CD like a linux live cd or the windows installation CD/DVD in and see if it boots. If your hard drive is the problem then it's not too hard too put a new one in and your data is most likely lost.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Why would you want to limit the amount of RAM?

Here's how to do it if your using windows. Open run and type msconfig then click on the boot tab and click on the advanced options button then you can set the maxium memory to use.

Whilst this should limit the ram used I'd still like to know why you want to limit the RAM.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

Hello

perhaps give this a try. I have not used it before but have used other software from them and its free. Can't hurt too try.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

You should check too see if you already have the 32-bit version. On my PC my 64-bit version says Internet Explorer(64-bit) whereas my 32-bit version just says Internet Explorer. Install flash for that browser.

- Hope this helps.

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

When you try opening the file does it ask you what program to open it with or does it do nothing?

Have you run a virus scanner? do you have a firewall installed?

Xlphos 16 Veteran Poster

I am assuming you have a 64-bit version of windows and your motherboard supports it?

Did you try both of the new sticks by themselves or one at once?
