Hello,

First, what is TDM? Targeted Disk Mode.

Back in the day of the first Mac laptops, and I think it was System 7, you could take a Mac laptop that had a special SCSI Cable (it was missing a pin) and using a control panel setting, turn that laptop into an external SCSI hard drive. It was very neat and convienient for moving large amounts of data, especially since a lot of these laptops (such as the 520, 5300) did not have a built-in CD-ROM, nor a built-in ethernet connection.

On Today's OS X machines, you can do something quite similar with Firewire. You will need a 6 pin firewire connector with the proper connectors on each side. All you need to do is wire the computers together with the cable, and then reboot the laptop while holding down the letter T on the keyboard. Feel free to look here for specific information:

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58583

Firewire also supports IP, and if you are trying to do TDM from a Windoze, box, you might be interested in this:

I do not have modern enough hardware to test this out.... I am still a SCSI shop with my G3. The old way still works for me under OS 9 and SCSI.... and those of you working with SCSI, remember it is not hot-swap!

Hello,

Has this configuration worked for you in the past, or is this a brand new installation?

This is also SCSI... wondering if you are powering the laptop off properly before hooking all the cables up. SCSI is not hot-swap like USB/Firewire.

Hello,

It depends on what you are using for software base. If you have eliminated *ALL* of your OS 9 materials, and you are certain that you will not need them tomorrow, then you may remove those 9.2.2 materials. I would keep the System Folder intact, however, to minimize restoration time.

Remember that an OS 9 System folder holds all the cards in the deck... you can migrate it off to a CD-ROM and bring it back if you needed to.

If you really have a space crunch problem, perhaps it is time for a new larger drive, or to migrate some of those things that you don't use and won't use anymore. Static files, such as music, may be migrated off to CD/DVD Roms if you need the space.

Just be sure to make backups of whatever you remove. You never know when you will need them again.

Hello,

My best GUESS is that the OS is damaged, and you should re-format it and set it up properly from scratch. It is possible that a bunch of device drivers are damaged or out to lunch, and that is corrupting your system. Get the data off NOW, and re-build from scratch.

Hello,

A different program is: Limewire. But I fully agree with GordonFi that the legal reasonings should prevent you from even wanting to dive into this type of arrangement.

A lot of the Napster / Limewire / Kazaaa software like to bring in viruslike programs to do things like steal serial numbers, perhaps passwords, and maybe a keystroke logger.

Best advice is to just leave this part of the internet alone, and do not mess with it. If you want to share photos, put them on a webserver somewhere and let people click on them.

Walk away. Be safe.

Hello,

IE 5.2 has been out of date for OS X for a couple years now... the browser of choice is Safari or Firefox.

I would start there, as an installation of either could make that website more accessable for you.

Which version of 10 are you working with? 10.1 10.2 103?

Hello,

DVD-R is a "burn once" technology, whereas DVD+RW is "re-write" technology. The RW disks cost a bit more, but you can re-use them over again. I am sure there is a limit somewhere on how many times you can reliably re-write a RW disk... perhaps 10, perhaps 100. I have not tried it, and am not ready to try and break my drive doing it.

You will find that RW's cost more short - term, but if you can re-use them, that is great and will pay off in the long run.

Hello,

First, you need comments. Every function should be commented out on what it does, and what the variables are. Insightful commenting will help out anyone trying to read the code. I am surprised your class doesn't seem to require it... and no, comments are not to be written AFTER the code is done. Use them while developing, so that it is all "there".

You need to look at the strcpy (Stringcopy) command to copy the strings.

It also looks like you are trying to copy the whole array... tempMonth = months. Unless the langauge has changed recently, in my day you could not copy elements of an array like that. You had to pound out each element in an assignment to make a copy.

Hello,

He may have purchased Linux on CD-ROM as if you are on a dialup, it is not feasible to obtain the disks in a timely fashion. Not everyone has high speed.

A lot of distros do use rpm's. I cannot name them all, but Fedora and RedHat do... rpm is "Redhat Package Manager".

I have yet to find software that I could not compile / run on my RedHat 9 box. Granted, I have had to go and track down dependancy failures through the years, and keep things up to date, but the installation of software worked just fine. I have not tried any high-end games on the linux box however, such as Free-Civ.

If I were you, I would go back to Linux and give it another chance. Ask specific questions in our forums, and achieve the computing success you are seeking.

Hello,

Does the computer try to mount the drive? Do you hear any clicking? Does Norton give you the chance to scan the IDE/SCSI bus and see if the drive is a member? Does Apple's Disk Utility show the drive?

It is possible that the hard drive's controller board is shot. If it was your computer's IDE board, the drive would have worked fine, assuming proper slave/master setup, in the other computer.

It is unfortunate that you have waited this long to move the data to a backup location. You will not make that mistake again.

Hello,

I am curious what a packet sniffer would say about the connection. Also wondering if your area has a history of power problems... is your router on a UPS? If not, do you have one available to steady the power to the unit?

I am also wondering if you have conflicting DHCP servers, or some other service running on the network that is causing a reconfiguration of the IP stack, or perhaps the connection itself.

Hello,

I don't know what IEEE488 is, but if you are using a JetDirect (internal or external) it is going to want to be programmed properly.

I would avoid the crossover cable and get the $30 hub or whatnot to wire it properly on a small network. Of course, then properly program the JD and the computer so they have the proper protocols installed and can work with each other.

Christian

kc0arf 68 Posting Virtuoso Team Colleague

Hello,

We use VNC a lot here at work, and also in the home environment. I have VNC running on Grandma's machine over dialup, and once a month or so need to remote in from 200 miles away and fix it. She finds it amazing....

Anyways, VNC is not VPN-like out of the box, especially if you are running it with Mac or Windoze.

I have to caution you on working with these protocols on an employer's machine. I discovered GoToMyPC on a contractor's computer at work, and had to report it. He was terminated immediately. Do not do this sort of thing at work.

If you are running WindozeXP, or 2003 Server or 2000 server, you have the option of using the RDP client software to remote control them. Those sessions are encrypted.

If you are running linux to linux, you can setup VNC to be encapsulated by SSH to encrypt the sessions. Interestingly, VNC on a linux/unix box with different port numbers will give the users different environments on the same machine.

And also be aware that if you are behind firewalls, you may have to open ports to have this stuff work. BUt be VERY CAREFUL on what you decide to do with this... open ports are invitations for visitors.

Hello,

There are discussions going on out there that OS X might be having problems with DNS caching. This might be flowing along those same lines.

Can you repeat the error religiously? If so, find the raw IP number of the website you are trying to work with, and try typing in that IP information into the website instead. See if the error occurs.

Hello,

I would love to be in your position to go out and get the 17" laptop. Just be aware that with it's larger size, finding a proper laptop bag could be an issue. But I would love to have the screen and the power, and the ability to run OS X in that quick and loving environment.

My laptop is a 2000 Powerbook G3 @ 333 MHz.

What do you plan on doing with the PC? If you are going to keep the hardware around, give Linux a run! Try Fedora Core 3 or perhaps SuSE.

You might also be looking for software to start out with your Mac. If you want some free, or low-cost software, consider Open Office (it is not Aquaized yet, so it will feel strange, but it works!), Ragtime (Desktop Publishing), MacGIMP (limited to 256 colors, but lots of photo editing capabilities), Mozilla Firebird, Retrospect (tape / DVD backup software).

For games, I love playing Spaceward Ho!

As for educational discounts, check with your college (Iowa State had their own Apple department) and/or with Apple directly.

If you have questions, come find us.

Enjoy!

AH!

Well, I would do a few things here first.

1) Modify the shell script on the server to not only copy the file, but compress it. My guess is that the .sql file is a big text database with some code here and there, but text none-the-less. Should crunch down nicely with gzip. If your script on the server times out, have it detach the process with the & sign.

2) On your mac, create a crontab inside the terminal for the user. Crontab formats look like this:

 SHELL=/bin/bash
 TERM=xterm
 MAILTO=emailbox
 # This is a sample Crontab
 # Written just for Dani by Christian
 # Don't tell Tek, as he may get jealous

 # MI HH DD MO DAYOFWEEK Sun=0

 # Run something on Monday at 5:10am, every Monday
 10 5 * * 1 (mondaytask.bat > /dev/null)

 # Get her file from her server trigger
 # Run Sun, Tue, Thur, Sat at 1:25 am
 25 1 * * 0,2,4,6 (filemaint commands... delete old?)
 27 1 * * 0,2,4,6 (copyfromserver.bat > /dev/null)

 # END OF Crontab

Now, she is going to need that batch script. I found a neat thing called expect to handle this on my side.

 #!/usr/bin/expect
 #
 # This is expect script copyfromserver.bat
 # It uses the expect code to prompt for usernames and passwords

Hello,

Your computer thinks you do have a soundcard. You might want to, as the root user, run kudzu "/etc/init.d/kudzu start" and see if it tries to remove any hardware. You might also want to edit /etc/modules.conf and remove any items concerning sound cards.

BUT IF YOU ARE NEW TO LINUX, do not do these things... just let it be. Editing the files could be bad to your machine. Always make a backup copy of files in /etc before you edit them.

Hello,

This sounds like a homework problem. I am not certain what you are trying to do is possible with scripts. Example scripts that come to mind include the linuxconfig utility, but I would bet that is a compiled program, not a script. Pine also does a lot of screen work in a text window, but am guessing that is compiled too.

You might want to Google search on scripting full-screen applications.

It sounds like something happened to the logical structure of the disk. You can try utilities, such as Norton, Diskwarrier, or TechTools. Just make sure whatever utility you purchase is fully compatable with 9.2.2

Hello,

I think suRoot is thinking we are in the Windows area here. Macs have a Date/Time control panel that may be found in the System Preferences menu off the Apple Menu.

Hmm. If you are sure that your computer is in the correct time zone, and you are syncing with the clock, you can try to reset the PRAM settings. That will zap out your customizations, meaning you may have to go through the control panels again, but it might be just what you need.

Boot the computer, and right after the "BONG" hit CMD-OPTION-P-R and the computer will BONG again. Let it BONG 2 or three times. release. The PRAM will be reset to default, and you can go in there and set the preferences again.

Hello Jan,

I cannot explain very slowly, because I cannot control how fast you can read. Perhaps print the response out upside-down to slow you down. :) I know what you are getting at...

Backing up software requires a few thoughts...

1) How much / what do you wish to backup?
2) How important is your materials that you are backing up?
3) What can you do to protect your backups?
4) Manual or Managed backup

How Much / What?
==============
Some people believe that making a complete copy of everything is the best route. While it can simplify restores, this method will require the most media (disks) and is the most expensive in terms of time.

I suggest that you backup onto the media the things you cannot replace... your DATA files. You already have OS X, MS Office, perhaps Adobe Photoshop already on a CD-ROM somewhere. You need not make continual backups of these files. DO some housekeeping on your hard drive, and try to place all of your data files in one location. This does not mean all inside one folder...keep them sorted and separate and properly organized. But you might wish to consider a folder called My Data, and inside that folder place all the other folders.

How Important

If you are backing up for business / finance reasons, then you should make backups that respect those business needs. Businesses make daily …

Hello,

This message was in the system before I was on the scene. I would be happy to help here. Note that I am advising you on how to enable all this... security is not being considered here.

In order for this to work, one computer has to be designated the "server" and the other the "client".

Let's make the Old PowerMac 6100 be the server, and the eMac be the client.

PowerMac 6100 OS 9 Setup
-- Did you turn file sharing on? Set the proper password? Name your computer?
-- Did you share the hard drive? Get Info... on the hard drive and check the box.
-- Did you use the Chooser to make sure Appletalk is active?
-- Did you check the Appletalk control panel and make sure it is on Ethernet? OS 9 could share out of the printer port... that is what LocalTalk was all about.

File Sharing on a older mac takes it a while to fire up, especially if you have fine-tuned the permissions access. Give it a good 10 minutes to get started up and sharing.

Physical Layout
- The 6100 for Ethernet requires a AAUI adapter thingy to connect to either Coax or Twisted Pair 10(0)baseT cable.
- If you are using the 10baseT or 100baseT Cat 5 cable, do you have a properly tested crossover cable? You will need this if you are connecting two computers directly. Otherwise, …

Hello,

Reboot the computer with the CD-ROM that came with your G4. Do not install anything, just reboot with it. Does the screen return to normal brightness and clarity?

If it does, that is great. You have a software config issue. If it remains dim, it could be hardware.

When rebooting, hold down COMMAND-OPTION-P-R , the command to reset what is called the PRAM. If the condition is caused by software, that too should clear it up.

You might also consider going into the display control panel, and changing the Gamma and/or Colorsync settings.

Hello,

There are several ways to go about this. I would encourage you to think about what computer is going to be your 'server' and what computer is going to be the 'client'. REason? You can run into trouble with backups, remembering which file is "latest", and run into version control problems.

You mentioned that the windows 98 machines can see your linux box, so the usual steps about checking your IP and other things are already done.

Under windows 98:
* Create a sharepoint. This means basically enable a folder to share. Decide security. If you are going to have a username / passoword combination, have that created.
* Grant permissions to a user for that sharepoint. It does no good to tell me I can borrow the car, and then not give me any keys. Same idea here. Make the share, and then set the permissions

On Linux Box:
You will need to be root user to work some of the utilities; others will not require root.

Look in /usr/bin/smb* for the smb utilities. There are programs called smbmount and smbumount. Those tools will help you mount up the share from win98 to the linux box. The linux box will not see it as a drive letter... rather it will show up in the file system and you simply "cd where/my/share/is" and you will "land" there.

If you would like more help, we need to know what version of …

Hello,

For the long run, yes, there are bound to be problems with computers that have the same SID numbers on them. I have not personally tested what you did there, but if the machine was ghosted without sysprep, I bet that the computer name will be the same on all of them too.

Might be able to track them down based on what the computer name is. Otherwise, the SID is in the registry, and I bet you will need to track down some sort of Registry Robot that can go and find those things.

If your company has a SUS server, that is a great way to deploy patches in a managed fashion. Or, you could use a domain policy to push the .msi files down and force an install that way. I have been playing with that type of deployment on my test network at home.

Hello,

It is sounding like a hardware error, but there is one thing that you might be able to do. Do you have OS 9 loaded somewhere on that laptop? no, not running Classic, but where you can boot into OS 9? See if you can do that, and then if the OS 9 system recognizes the media. If it does, you have a software problem. If it does not, you have a hardware problem.

If not, try booting from the OS X install disk. If it works, software on the hard drive. If it doesn't, I would be more suspicious on the hardware failure.

If the combo drive is too expensive, consider an external USB/Firewire CD/DVD burner / reader. Instead of upgrading my cd-rom to a DVD, I went out and got an external unit. Then again, I am on a G3 Lombard.
