The affiliate game is brutal. Commissions start off low and usually don't get much higher. My advice would be to pick a niche market where you see potential for growth. Also - find out commission percentages before you dive in, factor in your hosting costs and marketing budget. Expect to operate at small margins. At least at first...

If possible, try to avoid signing up through a network like Commission Junction (they are essentially a middle man) and instead try to partner directly with the merchant. You'll find that you'll get higher commissions and you will be able to operate at better margins. Then again... finding a merchant, in a niche market, that deals directly to affiliates And supports their own program ain't gonna be easy. Perhaps it's just better to start your own business... And while you're at it, offer you're own affiliate program. :P

i've paid for Press Releases with PR Web. It's not going to bring you huge traffic but it will definitely help get the word out. Their press releases are often picked up by third-party aggregators and will certainly make their way into the Search Engines.

Also - you might want to try making waves in the big Social Media Networks like Facebook, Twitter, or LinkedIn. Establish yourself in the community (aka your relevant industry) and .. well.. network. All it takes is time and steady/honest participation.

e-commerce is the practice of buying or selling services over the internet. Perhaps you are looking for shopping cart software?

jay 11 8 The Dude Abides Team Colleague

delicious is the only one I use. I find it quite useful.

jay 11 8 The Dude Abides Team Colleague

It is also dependent on process.

Sometimes I have accounts that want aggressive results, this entails the bulk of the work being done in a short amount of time and then maintenance to retain, increase and social branding.

In this case, custom and monthly apply.

Pricing is based on the time it takes to accomplish that goal.

Great feedback Lea! Each client has different objectives and goals. That being said, i think it is important to take the time to fully understand the clients business and goals in order to project milestones and price your services. I wonder, would you consider or do you already charge clients an initial fee for this time? Or do you typically just have them sign a service contract?

* out of subject link exchange
* re submission into search engines

I agree - irrelevant link exchanging is a common SEO mistake. And yes - if optimized properly, you do Not need to submit your site(s) directly to search engines.

This is an extremely smart development from the mighty Goog. Not only does it provide a nice feature to help sell Android phones, it gives them first mover advantage in the 'Visual Search' space. This will surely attract early adopters and help expand upon an already loyal following.

nooooo,
my competitor backlink count is 23,100 today.
yesterday it was 22,700.
howwww???
i will kill myself,if not my boss will do that. :(

Perhaps your competitor provides better resources and content, and as such, they were rewarded with more web citations?

jay 11 8 The Dude Abides Team Colleague

Dang... I don't know anyone who can speak or read Fillipino. Guess I'll have to sit this one out. :(

jay 11 8 The Dude Abides Team Colleague

yea.. saw this.. pretty cool stuff. Still in its infancy but it will get better. As a search engine, trying to help people find what they are looking for, i think it is very smart of Google to make a play in this space. Not only is it a nice feature that will help sell more Android phones, but it will also establish them as the first major player offering this technology. These types of developments make me want to buy more of their stock. :)

It depends on the product and the target audience. Consumer products, especially those geared towards kids under the age of 18, I would say absolutely. But if you are talking about business products I see no value in it and having spoken to people who have set up fan pages for business to business products they describe the effort as time lost that they will never get back.

That's a good point. It is more difficult for a B2B offering to relate and gain momentum on FB... Though, on the other hand, there are currently more than 350 million Facebook users. Granted, a majority of those people use FB for personal reasons but those people could still be business execs, agency reps, and other professionals.

I work with a company that provides B2B advertising and marketing services. They have a fan page with a few hundred fans and while it does not necessarily convert any sales, it is still something i think we should spend more time updating (and even integrate with Twitter). Nowadays, your tweets can post to the Wall of your company's fan page. Those posts are displayed in your fan's news feeds - which can then spawn comments, reach more users and effectively brand your business. As InsightsDig was saying.. it's all about the eyeballs and FB has lots..

Selling forum signatures is the same as selling links. This is against Google's Webmaster guidelines and will most surely get your website(s) penalized.

If you are looking to obtain links and web citations, build a quality and resourceful web destination that will naturally endorse your website.

If you are looking to sell links (aka your signature), you may want to rethink the strategy. If forum moderators catch on, you will most likely lose your membership. Furthermore, and probably most important, Google and other SE's do NOT place much weight on signature links. In other words, they provide little to nothing in terms of impacting SEO.

Ping backs are essentially citations from other websites that show up in your comments section. They are not necessarily spam but they could be. As the author of your website, you get to determine.

jay 11 8 The Dude Abides Team Colleague

Just yesterday, Google announced that they will display personalized search results based on usage - regardless if you are signed in or not. So this means that they now track the search activity of All 'enabled' (by default) users and display customized search results. They are tracking 'signed-out' users via a cookie linked to the web browser. Users *can* opt out of "search customizations" but i'm confident that a majority of people will not...

This has already raised some privacy concerns over at Search Engine Land, but from an SEO perspective, I see it as another shift in favoritism toward the "white label" web destinations. For example, if you have a niche travel site but the end users mostly clicks on Expedia or Trip Advisor, it is likely that they will be displayed ahead of your site in the SERPs. Even though you might have the more relevant and resourceful website. I'm interested in hearing everyone's thoughts about this announcement...

jay 11 8 The Dude Abides Team Colleague

Hey, Welcome to DaniWeb! Google does not share details about it's search algorithm and ranking methods. Nonetheless, they continually evolve and adapt to how users are searching. Just yesterday - Google announced that they are personalizing search for EVERYONE.

If you are looking to optimize your website to better appear in Google Search Results, than you have to employ some basic SEO techniques. We were just discussing a few over on this thread...

hey friends ,
Recently I got few Pingbacks for few of my posts in my blog.
Are they spam?
I would also like to know if they do any good in increasing the traffic or do they negatively affect the page rank??

They could be spam. Is the person/blog pinging you legit? As the author of a blog, you can delete those comments if you feel the ping back is not worthy. They would still be linking to your blog but at least you aren't linking back to them in your comments section. Otherwise, if they are legit pings, leave them. It shows that others are reading and linking to your blog.

Good question Pete. Thanks for posting. I know people who have good things to say about iContact. They claim it is easy to use and a helpful support staff.

My company uses it's own newsletter software and some of the things we needed to address were...
Opt-out capabilities
Speed of the mail server (if you have tens of thousands of subscribers, it could take hours before the newsletter reaches the recipient)
Features - HTML vs text-based newsletters, surveys, polls
Tracking

For those who advertise on Facebook, has it worked for your business or has it helped bring higher sales/conversion?

I am interested in this as well. I would think that B2C advertisers would have more success with Social Media Advertising than B2B, but I have yet to hear from anyone with experience in advertising on such a broad social network like Facebook. Bueller?

jay 11 8 The Dude Abides Team Colleague

I think the rockstar of Web 3.0 may yet be Twitter. It is still growing in terms of the apps and products that are being created around it and regardless of what many others say I think it still has some growing to do, both in terms of users and technology.

I agree.. additionally, it should be interesting to see how successful their ad platform becomes...

If they see her freaking out, all they need to do is make a phone call. I understand the desire to protect our children but we can't keep them in the dark about everything. If there were a state or national emergency, i think kids would be more likely to hear about it from the television or through their friends than from an a video game console. We are much more connected these days... I can see kids finding out about this stuff via a school announcement, facebook, twitter or most likely a TV interruption in their MTV programming. :)

Some people are hell bent on getting your local news/gossip, so I can see a small percentage of people willing to pay for the online access. But with so many other news outlets online, I cannot see this model working long term. It's a shame though... there's really no other paper that caters to Long Island, NY. I wonder if Topix or any other third party still distributes their content?

jay 11 8 The Dude Abides Team Colleague

Yes - i definitely think they can and I'm sure their toolbar tracks usage as well. So even if you don't have a Goog Account, they can still track one's usage via the Toolbar and tie it back to your IP.

I wonder if Google works with Federal organizations to help crack down on illegal online material.

jay 11 8 The Dude Abides Team Colleague

Given my work schedule, I try to do as much online shopping as possible and Free shipping is a big selling point for me. Why drive to the store when you can buy the item and have it directly sent? That is, assuming you know exactly what you want (size, color, and other specs).
I agree with Insights in that this past Cyber Monday seemed to be mostly hype. I read and heard a lot about Cyber Monday but I didn't happen to see many deals. Though I did randomly find an offer from Timberland.com. They were promoting a discount code (CYBERMON) right on their homepage. It was good for $20 and free shipping for orders over $100. I was originally going there just to look for new winter boots - but the savings and free shipping prompted me to open my wallet and place an order. Sometimes, timing is everything. :)

jay 11 8 The Dude Abides Team Colleague

I have never gotten involved in Adsense but from what I have learned the money to made is not significant. Could someone give me an idea of the types of returns seen over the course of a month and/or a year so that I can get some persepctive?

Sure - with a 2% click-thru ratio (and depending on the ad market) - you can expect to earn about $.01 per visitor. So roughly $10,000 for every 1 million visitors. Again - this greatly depends on CTR and the types of ads being displayed.

jay 11 8 The Dude Abides Team Colleague

I think you might want to search for 'seo friendly directories' and submit your sites manually. :)

Keep in mind that "SEO Friendly Directories" are directories that have editorial integrity - meaning that they regularly reject spammy site submissions and ONLY list sites that are quality resources.

A directory that links to everyone is a link farm - And Link farms are Not SEO Friendly. :)

jay 11 8 The Dude Abides Team Colleague

I just read a report based on Experian/Hitwise data that showed that the majority of searchers use 3 or more key phrases. Keeping this in mind, would you optimize your site to included longer search phrases?

Depending on the semantics of the phrase, I would probably optimize for the most popular of the three and let the SE's sort the rest out. In other words, if you can pull for one of the three similar phrases, you will naturally pull for the other two. That is, assuming your page is well optimized and of merit.

jay 11 8 The Dude Abides Team Colleague

There are many factors that go into optimizing your site for search. If there is anything specific, please feel free to ask for help here at DaniWeb. We are happy to help!! :)

In the meantime, try sticking to these core basics...

  • Research your relevant keywords and keyword search phrases.
  • Conventionally name your site's file pages and/or Sub-domains
  • Optimized title, meta and alt tags
  • When coding your site, adhere to universally accepted web standards .
  • Create compelling and grammatically correct content
  • Employ Web analytics to track traffic and review how visitors are finding and using your site.

Hi,

This is my first post here. I have an ecommerce site that's actually on a Wordpress platform. It's my first foray into ecommerce so I'm starting small. I'd like to try PPC for it but my history with PPC is spotty. I've done a few campaigns but feel like I just don't know enough about it to have the best ROI. Since money is tight, I'm asking for a resource that can help me make the most ROI.

Please don't waste my time. I am not interested in an ebook written by some "guru" or a PPC course or membership site. I am looking specifically for a good book that has up to date information on how to do PPC . Any recommendations would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Eunice

Hi Eunice, welcome to DaniWeb. Personally, I have a ton of experience with Google AdWords and YSM and can probably help answer specific questions relating to PPC campaigns - so feel free to post them here on this thread or in a new thread in the PPC subforum at DaniWeb.
I am also in "newviewit's" camp with regards to the importance of obtaining hands-on experience and would additionally say that reading Google's Adwords support documentation is a great way to learn the basic's about PPC but keep in mind that some of their advice is geared toward getting you to spend more. Again, please feel free to post any specific questions and I will do my best to …

Hi divetis, welcome to DaniWeb. There is actually a good discussion about posting comments in the SEO sub-forum of DaniWeb - http://www.daniweb.com/forums/thread238187.html

Blog commenting is really very important for link building for a particular keyword. It is important as other processes for SEO.
Traffic is not concerned with blog commenting.

Users should NOT comment on blogs for the sole purpose of Link building or SEO. Users that do this are considered to be Spammers.

The best way to obtain links is to earn them. And the best way to earn them is to build a useful and worthwhile resource.

My company uses Central Desktop to collaborate on various projects. Though, I don't think they have any templates for marketing plans. In my experience, each marketing plan is unique, so I don't think we ever used a software application to help guide the process. That's not to say I never would. I am interested to hear of any marketing plan 'applications' that track budgets, objectives, milestones, and anything else that goes into launching a marketing campaign. Please share! :)

jay 11 8 The Dude Abides Team Colleague

How can reading irrelevant posts bring you money?

jay 11 8 The Dude Abides Team Colleague

Nice stats. In my eyes, it still pays to set-up a fan page because even if a person does not become a fan, they can still find or visit the page or see, in their news feed, when their friends become fans. So there is great reach and branding potential.

jay 11 8 The Dude Abides Team Colleague

Good question... I think there will always be a need for professional journalism but the medium of which we receive our information is ever evolving. So while there will still be 'established media,' I think you will see a major push in the next few years for newspapers and other established outlets in having a greater 'online' presence.

jay 11 8 The Dude Abides Team Colleague

Dang! That's a lot of emails to your phone! :) do you really need that many? I have to think it is distracting. I maybe get about 20 per day. I have to admit though - if i linked my work email to my phone, i would get about the same as you. However, i chose to keep work separate. Otherwise, i think i would go crazy. :)

jay 11 8 The Dude Abides Team Colleague

Social Media is more than just being geeky and gossip. It's used for marketing subliminally. Large corporations like Pepsi etc know this and are serious about appearing to be geeky but make subliminal sales pitches on "Social Media."

I confess. I use it for marketing purposes. I'm slightly ashamed of myself.

There's no need to feel ashamed. Thousands of companies use social media outlets to increase awareness and visibility for their brand. Quite frankly, i think it is silly not to. :)

jay 11 8 The Dude Abides Team Colleague

Hmm... i haven't checked in a while either.. thanks for the heads up. I would definitely add the 'image as context.'

Please read the following url by Google Webmaster Central Blog. Google considers commenting on blogs as spam. Please read it and get enlightened.

http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com/2009/11/hard-facts-about-comment-spam.html?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+blogspot%2FamDG+(Official+Google+Webmaster+Central+Blog)&utm_content=Google+Feedfetcher

Thanks

Thanks Allison - this is an excellent resource! But to clarify - Google does NOT consider ALL comments as spam. Though, the issue has become so great, they mostly disregard comment links. In the article, they bring more attention to the issue and offer ways to combat blog spammers.

More importantly, they speak directly to comment spammers, telling them that the best way to increase rankings is to provide original and useful content and making a site that is search engine friendly. Bottom line, Comment spamming will NOT get you better rankings or higher visibility.

I used to be a huge gamer and actually just recently picked up the joystick to play the new Call of Duty - Modern Warfare (nerd alert!). Xbox Live is already allowing users to access their Facebook and Twitter accounts directly from their TV or Xbox console. It's not too surprising that they will feed you emergency alerts. Judging from the article, it looks like the alert will be akin to when one of your Friend's signs on to XBL. These alerts are well integrated and rather unobtrusive - so they have little effect on the game play.

Personally, if there were a state or national emergency, I would definitely want to know about it as soon as possible. If that means beaming it through my Xbox - then so be it. :)

i agree with Mackone. AdSense has a much larger pool of advertisers and if you are new, they have loads of resources for you to read and learn about how to optimize the placement and integration of your ads.

Most importantly, will disabling third-party cookies stop ISPs (partnered with companies like Front Porch) from collecting information on your browsing habits?

Bottom line... Disabling third-party cookies can stop some types of tracking by advertisers, but not all. If your ISP is installing third-party cookies then you should be able to block those so that their partners, like Front Porch, cannot track your habits.

Will disabling third-party cookies stop Google and similar website-based ad networks from collecting information on your browsing habits?

Yes - but they can still track your browsing habits when you are on their site or network of sites, using first-party cookies. Once you leave their network, and you have third-party cookies disabled, they will not be able to track you.
