when you attempted the repair reload of windows did you format the drive or were you just installing it over or alongside the original install of windows .
I think you windows is corrupt! so the quickest and easiest solution now would be to formatt and reinstall windows

I did it on the different computer, here are the results:

Think that had any effect?

i don't know you tell me ,did it make any difference when you tried it !

You can find out machine specific ram information for any machine with the Crucial Memory Advisor™ tool at www.crucial.com.

that won't work in this case ,they never bought the laptop yet ,and want to know the answer before they buy it

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

you changes so much ,i don't see how it actually fixes your original problem with the original motherboard . i was going to suggest keyboard or mouse as they were the only things you never mentioned in any of the post

go to start/run,type in msconfig ,and startup and remove the one you don't need from there ,not the task manger ..
good site to help ,in the last paragraph is a link to a startup site ,just search the .exe of a program from msconfig to see if its safe to disable .

and a good free virus scanner is AVG 8 or Avast .get either one at www.filehippo.com

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

No, there wasn't a "blue screen of death", although my computer constantly says it could be at risk because we only use downloaded virus scanners, and not the factory-installed ones.

not all downloaded virus scanners are good and work ,some tell lies ,and usually the lie is that you are infected ,and the skin for vista most likely came with a malware/Trojan .For a good malware/spyware/trojan scanner I suggest malwarebytes scanner its free and good .

that is the monitor display goes of while the pc is running, after resetting it works again.

actually ,windows shutdown in my opinion ,just didn't shut right off the tower

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

check in your monitor options to see if hibernation is enabled or standby.if so disable it

Hibernation and standby are in the power options not the monitor options , power options are in the desktop properties ,under screen savers

my friend has the same problem and that's the first thing we did...
and we still have this message...???
:-/

not sure about pci-e have never dealt with one .but find lots on google about the error ,checking the settings in the bios seems like a method used for some when the reseting does nothing .

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

my friend had the same issue last week... and when he called tech support, they replaced the i/o card, then it got fixed...im not sure if emachines has one...

yeah ,i/o card is a general term ,it means input /output ,it could be a video card and nic card a sound card ect ect

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

You are only making people with this problem, confused...

Have a nice day ;)

lol, im confused so everyone else should be confused too.LOL
tell me this and i will say no more ,you post #3 you made this statement because ! i thought you were telling the orignal post how to fix his problem ,but now i think you were just sharing your problem ,correct ,because the 2 problems are not the same,,post one mentions nothing about having a desktop folder shortcut on the desktop ,that i can see

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

sometimes it could just be the i/o panel card...

please explain ,as far as i know not all computer have i/o panel cards ,if i think its what you are talking about

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

Yes, but I think he is trying to avoid taking the HDD to a recovery company. They charge way to much to recover data, of course if that data is very important and can't be recreated then that would be a solution, but to me I wouldn't bother even taking it.

I never said to take it to place like that ,im just saying its possible that he will never get the info off the drive because no matter what you try if you cant see the drive you ain't gonna see it no way no how

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

I'm not sure of which laptop I am getting yet, just where would i found the amount of "slots" on the comp info?

no way to tell as you don't know what one youa re buying and they are all different ,just as where you by it ,usually you can tell by the ram capacity ,like if it says it can take 4gig ram then you know there are 2 slots ,because for now bigest one stick of ram is 2gig .

Have you been drinking???

Cut from First post:

no i think maybe you have .lol
taken from the first post

Basically when you double click on a jpg file on the desktop the Windows Picture and Fax Viewer will open briefly and preview and then close

It reads == Unable to open JPG files on desktop, with Windows Picture and Fax Viewer.
read it again, the jpg file's are on the desktop ,they double click on them and the viewer opens briefly but closes ,they then take them from the desktop and put them in a folder elsewhere, and they will open . good day

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

Freeze it
Drop it
Hit it

I have over the years done all 3 to no avail ,if the drive is dead its dead ,and the only way i know of to retrieve files is to have a company that specializes in that stuff take the platters out and retrieve the data

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

Yes, that is true, there is only one lens for the DVD drive. Maybe i confused you, but what I meant was to try to clean the lens of the DVD drive. The link I gave above is to a web page that shows you how to clean your DVD drive. Just try to clean the Lens and see if it works. If it does then, it will be better than buying a new one.

if it were dirty it would't read the DVD's and play them .would it

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

I had same problem and found that Windows picture and fax viewer does not
allow you to have a shortcut to the desktop itself, on the desktop. Crappy soft!
Solution: Remove desktop icon from desktop...

Hope this helps someone :)

hello, the original post is talking about having a .jpeg file on the desktop ,not a picture and fax viewer program shourt cut

its really quite simple ,BUT yes you can crack the case ,most people break the locking clips on the keyboard ribbon cable or the mouse pad ones ,you also have to be careful of the wifi wires, and so much more ,if you took things apart as a kid and couldn't get them back together ,then i say don't do it .leave the laptop to an expert

The so called freezer idea actually worked for a buddy of mine after a day.replacing circuits worked for my manager once.he calls it luck... see if you can find any.

the problem with the freezer idea is that drives and the files you want to save are to big ,the drive will be hot again in no time ,maybe ok if there is just one file you really need .

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

In my startup file there are only two files. Adobe reader speed launch and think adds. No internet explorer.

Think Adds????????as both are not needed at start up just delete the icons from the startup folder

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

find another defective drive with the same model then try replacing the circuit board with another drive, if you're lucky, you'll be able to revive your drive...(that's what i did with my old hdd that contains sources of my apps...) not 100% sure but it's worth the try though..

that will work only if the other defective drive has a good circuit board! so another working drive, of the exact same model will do best

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

is there a way to double check that? I don't want to buy a replacement and then find out that it isn't the problem.

I know what you mean! ,no way i know of except taking it to a good repair shop that has the tools to do so ,Im self taught at computer repair ,I own post cards that are suppose to tell me why the computer will not boot but they really don't work all that good ,only way i know of is the way i do it ,i tried the ram and cpu and harddrive in another tower and they all worked, reset Bios to defaults with jumper pins no difference so i replaced the board with one i had, and wala the computer boots and I reinstall winxp and it goes back to the owner.

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

Im jealous thats great specs.lol.my best recommendation is to check what the manufacturer recommends for the board. Ill rather keep my opinions, dont wanna be responsible for something bad.

echo echo echo

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

whats the brand of your system??
.

the post title says it all EMachine ,i assumed the led refer to were the front case lights ,and yes it could be ram , ram usually causes a beep on startup

Intel Centrino ,so its a laptop ,my answer is still the same .intense usage ,yes in my opinion ,especially if the fan stop working ,then the cpu will quickly overheat

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

never hurt to try and clean it

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

i don't think the heatsinc size is the big difference ,a quick look at ASUS and i think the biggest difference is FSB ,amount of ram each will handle and Price ,

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

My grandaughter has an Advent 3105 desktop. It was never any trouble until one day it just wouldn't start-no lights,no anything.I thought it might be the psu, after first checking the cable. When switched on the fan doesn't work, but the smaller case fan beside it comes on for a few seconds and a green light on the motherboard comes on and stays on untill switched off, when it goes out gradually.I assume this is some sort of residual current held somewhere else.I have looked into getting a replacement psu but on the cabling is a 6 pin
aux connector on the motherboard which none of the others appear to have. The cabling for it is 3 black,2 orange,1 red. I know i is not a PCI Express as that is 3x2,this is 6 in line.
Can anyone point me in the right direction, assuming it is this which is at fault.
Regards Rogerok

is this an older P4 computer if so it could be a plug for the P4 ,earlier ones had them i think ,before the switch to the square 4 pin one ,the problem sounds like the psu,its putting out a little power when turned on ,but not enough to boot the system, the residual power is held briefly in the power supply ,what make is the motherboard in the unit

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

My idea!,motherboard bad ,had one last week doing the same thing ,replaced the motherboard and away it went !

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

makes sense

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

start with contacting Compaq .that is unless you already tried that.
I know noting about servers but what about in the Bios ,some normal computer have this option in the bios to turn down fans

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

over use of anything, will cause it damage eventually .just ask Deep Throat
