I bought a new DVD-R drive, and tried to load it using that but do I need a CD-ROM try to do it? because it seems to not be reading that also.

no, the dvd -r should read it ,did you go into the bios to set the dvd-r as the first boot device ,before you tried to get it to read the winxp cd .also is it a full copy of winxp or a windows xp recovery cd

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

my opinion is you have another issue and not a problem with burning software .i have owned many burners since 1997 and have use nero for years on many different computers and never had it crash my computer ,i think maybe its a problem with the burner ,not the software .

so many possibility's, bad Power supply,motherboard/cpu ,ram. hard drive .
first thing is to remove all pci addin cards, except video card if you have one and not onboard video , Ram and ,unplug hddrive ,cdroms ect ect , try a boot.
also when in the case make sure all fans are clear of dust buildup ,it will cause overheating

what does L1 Cache and L2 cache mean?

that is the answer to you question on how much cache your spu has ,l2 being the one that is the best to have more of .
you have enough cpu to play the game ,but there is more to it than cpu ,you also need good video card and lots of ram

for clarification-

there was a factory thermal paste pre-applied to the heatsink that i used, but since i've unseated it, I need to go get some more.

i tried running w/ just onboard, but no luck there.

The front panel has potential to be the problem. is there a way to bypass the power light? for whatever reason my case came with some weird connectors (Raidmax O2 case), and as such, the power LED connectors do not match up to the on board plug. based on newegg reviews, no one else has had this complaint, so this is probably due to my inexperience that I don't know how to rewire the plug correctly, whether the plug is incorrect at all.

most of the plugs have no space between wiring, but the power led has a gap between connectors.

I downloaded you manual ,im looking through it now ,just one think to make sure you have the ATX12V1: ATX 12V Power Connector plugged in that a square 4 pin connector goes in the motherboard ,near the mouse connection
i have had that with plugs on different cases ,what i do to correct it is using small wire cutters and cut out the center and have it like its 2 connectors ,one on each wire and hook it up that way .you would have to be careful not to cut it too close to the metal inside the plug .
also noticed that your ram choice is not on there …

I am not sure how to test teh PI plug at this point, as it needs to be plugged in to the board to allow the P.S.U to function.

no sure how to check it either ,as i have a psu tester to do it .but it should not have to be plugged in for the psu to operate ,as the psu can be used in a non p4 board.
if you have a volt meter the black wires are ground and the yellow should be 12 volt.

first thig i would try is remove video card and try onboard ,if you haven't all ready done this .also make sure that the connectors for the front panel switch and lights are on correctly
did you put thermal past on the processor before you install the heatsinc and fan

Hi there,
I don't how i can put a password on my folders on the desktop. I'm using WinXP as the OS. I have tried to follow the above instructions i can only see security but i can't see private. Please help out. Thanks in advance.

just let me say this ,you should not store folders on the desktop with important file in them, the reason ,the desktop is just a file created to store shortcuts and for users to access windows operations ,and can become corrupt ,you will loose all files stored on the desktop, file and folders should only be stored on the root of C:\,[or a add in/external storage hard drive of course ] giving C: is the drive letter of you hard drive .

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

try f2 for setup and just go into it,don't change anything just save settings on exit ,see what happens .
for the missing help try this might help might not ,go to start/run, type in sfc /scannow ,note there is a space between the "C and / . you will be asked for the winxp cd to replace any missing system files , sfc =system file checker

I tend to agree. I have already started looking for parts on ebay. looks to be around 100 dollars for a case with motherboard. Maybe a little less.

you have to look at the age of the laptop and the price of parts compared to price of new cheap laptop ,
maybe be a good decision ,but may be some stupid little thing and not the board, but my experience ,not being a laptop repair pro, no way of knowing unless you try known working parts.
I have a laptop that gets hot in the area of the cpu ,and lcd goes nuts ,i tried a new heatsinc/fan ,no go ,new cpu no go ,so i gave up ! it just sits on the shelf .
Canada ,e-bay .

After updating the flash bios on an old Sony Vaio, I can no longer boot up (I got the message that the update was successful. I get the Sony screen (with the "Phoenix Technologies" logo in the corner), and it goes no further. I can't get into the bios, and it won't respond to the Windows CD disk for Windows reinstallation.

It's an old machine, and I have no diagnostic tools available. I assume I messed up the bios; are there any clever tricks to get access to it? Can a repair technician fix this? Is my only alternative sending it off to Sony repair for reimaging or "re-flashing" the bios?

Any ideas are appreciated. Thanks!

before the flash did you choose yes to backup to floppy the old bios settings ,if not then you are in trouble, the first thing you are suppose to do after a flash on first bootup is go into the bios and set to default and save changes and then try booting all the way into windows ,
also why the flash ,what problem were you trying to remedy ,as it is never recommended you flash bios unless its going to fix an issue you are having ..

If I want 5 different browsers that should be of no consequence to anyone but me. As for it causing problems; It never has caused ANY problems in the past...NEVER!!!

The question is HOW CAN I FIX THE PROBLEM.

other poster was just making a suggestion ,no need to bite the hand that feeds you ,I also would say no need to have all those browsers ,you are only looking for problems ,like the ones that come with updated of said browsers ,
anyway ,here is a tool to help you at least try a fix . winsockfix .

put the ram and battery back in,remove any unnecessary pci cards , and unplug the hard drive and cdroms/floppy drive and try it.
it maybe the motherboard or cpu or a combo of both items ,also if you bought cheap powersupply as i have done ,and have bought bad new psu units before .

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

Unplug it completely and let it sit a few mins. Plug it back in and see if it will boot. Any lights, noises, anything else?

was the laptop plugged into a seruge bar or directly into wall outlet when the power went out ,
try removing the battery for a bit and then put it back in and then plug it back into outlet

so you cant see anything on the screen? do you know to flash the BIOS.if you know how do that for troubleshooting

flashing bios is not for troubleshooting ,updating bios is only recommended if the new bios info has a fix for a problem you are having ,not the problem you have right now .
maybe going into the bios/setup on bootup, usuall by hitting the f2 or f11/f12 on a dell laptop . and setting bios to defaults will help you now ,but don't try a Flash ,in my opinion

My power supply blew, which has also ruined the motherboard.
I need to keep the hard drive, which has win98SE, due to some s/ware I use which I can't re- register.
I need to get a new M/board, and would like a more powerful cpu such as Intel Q 6600.
Can anyone confirm if it's possible to have win98se working with a more modern m/board and cpu.

Chris

its not likely that win98 will have support drivers for such a new motherboard ,but i could be wrong.
I was once before !

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

also .its recommended that you install oldest version first ,as not to replace newer file with older versions ., so its proper to install win98 then winxp in that order .
