i defently would have use more that 10gig for os,every time you install program on D\: it puts necessary dll files,driver files and such in the system32 folder on the c:\ drive .also the registry file ,and if you store large files in folders on the desktop they are also on C:\

as for removing windows program you don't need go to control panel add /and remove programs ,they will be listed there also in add and remove ,look on the left pain for add and remove windows components ,thats where you remove windows messenger and outlook express and such programs .

do you have a high speed inter service provider that offers you faster speed than the 256kb/s that you are getting .are you paying for high speed and only getting 256kb's if so call your isp help line to complain

what do you want to know there should be a small door on the back where the ram goes ,i have installed ram in over 50 laptops now and all went in a small door in the back of the laptop ,how to do take a screwdriver and remove the door ,ram goes in small slot ,if there is only one slot and it allready has ram in then you will need to buy a larger stick of rame like a 1 gig to replace 512 stick .the laptop takes ddr sodim ram ,it would take one like this .oh yeah your local computer show can install it for you when you buy it .

also i did the scan on my computer and it only tell me a suggested upgrad type ,pc2100 and my board supports pc2700 ,doesent tell me how much i have just what kind i can use to upgrade .

NO ,definitely not ,that for adding a pcmci device ,like adding more usb plugs ,wireless device ,externial sound card ,ect ect ect !! the ram is usually on the under side ,small door ,you need to remove a screw to get the cover off .there will be more than one door ,just need to remove them untill you come to the one with a stick of ram or a empty ram slot

Weird ,Not saying anyone is wrong about the topic here but, i have 3 dells here right at the moment ,all power supplies look the same a regular atx ones and have same power data on the stickers as regular ones ,and the 20 pin connector plugs into my psu tester ,only thing is the -5v, light doesn't light up on the tester .
also ,its been about 2 yrs now but i one time put a regular psu in a dell dimentions 2350 or something like that ,i remember need 4 pin a adapter wire for a hdd or cdrom, or something like that , and never heard from owner yet !but hest a few hundred miles away ,so maybe he just never got back to me when it all burnt up.

Oh ,and remember the psu holds some power after its unplugged ,make sure you drain it before you open it .

i did this coz im the type of guy who always opens my case on a daily bases just to have a look and make shure everything is fine ,

Dell makes nothing of there own ,they just build computer and sell them

try new cable ,or maybe the ide channel is gone bad on the motherboard ,try take the hard drive ribbon cable plug it into the secondary slot ,usually where the cdrom's are plugged into

I know this may sound really stupid but a lot of experience in the field has taught me that not all problems are software!!
I have had to physically clean out more computer than reformatting hard disks.
If anyof th fans and especially the video card fans are blocked up or if there are layers of dust actually nside the machine then this can and (in manycases has) caused the swhole machine to suddenly slow down as the thermal cut out is cutting in to prevent it overheating;

Have a look insde the box and if it hs ot been cleaned out physically n the last 6 months then it is possible this is the reason.

A system restore has crossed my mind, but I would much rather attempt to fix the problem before I do that. Mostly because the TCP optimizer did in fact fix a problem I was encountering earlier, and I fixed my Norton problem, so I'd have to undo several fixes to solve my problem with a restore.

you need to fix the explorer problem and not worry about tcp optimizer as you have the explorer problem first! I suggest you do a system restore back to before you had the explorer starting problem ,and if it fixes explorer and you still can't get to ebay and such re-run tcp optimizer again !

Anyway to the problem at hand ,i first suggest ccleaner to remove all temp files and such ,then use the registry cleaner section of ccleaner to clean registry ,and go to the tools section and it will show add and remove program ,may show something related to the bad video drivers ,if so uninstall it .

i suggest to find the time when you can sit and watch ,and start over ,boot to winxp cd and delete partition and create new one ,format it , and start windows install over !but sit and watch as long as you can !!

I always run anti-virus programs so I've never had to reinstall due to viruses.

probably because they were made with there prospective programs .just guessing

my system is just over 3 yrs old ,and i ran for 2 years or more with original install ,then i bought a bigger drive and did a clean install ,but have done countless reinstalls for other people many, many , time for same persons!some people need it done every 2 or 3 mnts because of viruses and trojans ,they get from people they don't even know on msn and facebook and places like that .i use neither myself .

not sure if they will take it with outthe hdd ,why not get the data backed up first ,the hdd could actually be the problem with the laptop

I pressed the repair option, not the installing a fresh copy of xp option.

the mydocuments you speak of is the one on the desktop? if yes there areone in the same and not saved twice ,the one showing in mycomputer and on the desktop are just shortcuts to the other .download ccleaner find it with google ,it will clean out all temp folders on the computer

One thing that I noticed is that the SB green LED on the motherboard is on, however when I disconnect power from the wall to the PSU, that light goes completely out in a matter of 2 seconds. Is this synonymous with system board failure? Or is there perhaps anything left to check?

you took away the power ,the light has to go out nothing to keep it on!
also did this problem happen when you installed the new card or long time after !

did you try setting up auto run by right clicking on the cdrom icon in mycomputer go properties and autorun and set it to desired programs .

Office XP, Office 2000 and even Office 97 run on Vista. I installed them during Vista beta testing

wow that a lot of money to shell out for office programs ,you have 3 different ones

i don't use a office program enough to justify buying one .i use notepad and wordpad and open office from time to time

you could try a format and reinstall of winxp

tiger is the retailer, not the brand!!! Double check your brands before making a comment next time!!!

there should be no owners docs & shared docs in you system folder .

go to mycomputer and right click on the hard drive icon and go properties ,this will tell you how much space is free on the drive.
5,000,000 kb is about 5gb
also your os and program file will take up quite a bit of drive space ,open mycomputer ,open the hdd ,and go to documents and settings ,if you only have one user name on the computer it will show as admin and your user name ,right click on the main user and go to properties this will tell you the amount space taking by the user .

you should have hit the enter key when you had this hi-lited .

next step is to boot laptop to the windows cd and go to the windows recovery repair ,and run chkdsk /f

how to use recovery console,not you may not need admin password when it asked, just hit enter when asked for it .,unless you have used admin password

if the chkdsk doesn't work the other way is to do the same steps as shown before, only then not R to repair, but hit enter to reinstall... 1 hint, remove and remake partition where windows is installed now.

this will wipe drive of all data and important file on the hdd.if you hit R the second time it will reinstall over current install .this will only work if you winxp cd is not a OEM version

when installing office you just do a custom install to pick and chose what you want .

somebody here said that you can download linux ISO onto a cd or dvd and use it without installing, but how can you do that without messing up my system. my notebook is an hp with a recovery partition and vista preinstalled. i want to test linux ubuntu on it first.

the os runs from the cdrom and uses ram to install necessary file .but can/may also use harddrive .but removes file on shutdown . i have used most live cds' don't have a favorite ,but think that puppy linux has best option ,you use live cd then using puppy linux you create a multi session cd or dvd ,and you can then use it to run from the cd and actually save things back to the multi secion cd/dvd things like emails and browser favorites .,
