Based on what i know about processors this is just an opinion based on what i read,but i think the biggest you will be able to use is the E6700,you board don't support the 1333 bus speed like you said in the first post.it only supports up to 1066 as stated on the hp site .

yeah,looks like thats the case .and the rambus ram slots will not take any other type of ram .you have to have /buy RDRAM for it .i have bought some on e-Bay ,and they can be pricey

i did a google search and could find none with a definite answer as to what key to hit, but did find a few saying it was hard to do !try delete key or f10 seem to the most common ones ,just make sure you keep hitting the key over ans over as soon as you turn on the machine .

these most like have something to do with you problem ,but hjt logs are to be posted in

If I buy a full retail version and I alredy have keys on all these machines can I use that disk to repair/reinstall on all three or do I need separate software for each??? Thank again Andy

you do not need to buy and new software if you have a friend or co-worker who has xp pro dis k,they can make you a copy of theres and you can use that .I do it all the time with customers computers that had oem install and no disk ,but have key on the case .i just use a copy of home or pro that i got from a friend ,as i only had a oem restore version with my own tower .

shouldn't need a swap file with 4 gigs of ram ,winxp has issues with that much ram,do a goolge search on winxp and 4 gigs of ram for more info

also the power supply in the old computer may have a different mainboard plug ,if they are really old ,pre ATX .wattage shouldn't matter just to try it ,as long as its putting out power on all plugs

could be a power supply issue ,giving power but not enough in the right places to boot the OS

hit f8 repeatedly as soon as it powers on - you should get to a menu. "Choose last known hood configuration" and if that doesnt work try "safe mode"

to continue ,in safe you will be able to use the program you used to stop the startup programs ,did you use msconfig, or hijackthis or some other means !

don't mind me ,long day of course it will not boot ,anyway ,when you downloaded ubunto did you download the ISO file ,what program did you use to burn the iso to the disk ,i used iso buster, once and nero the other times .

It wouldn't read the cd I got from on-disk.com or the 2 cd's I made myself
(downloaded from ubuntu.com). My desktop would read and boot from all three.

so it ready no disk you put in the drive ,even regular disk like music and hardware drivers cd and the like !

would it b worth goin in to safe mode savin all my stuff onto a external hardrive and just restore it completely and start again from scratch

would be the thing to do if you can ,not sure you will have usb devices in safe mode though ,you'll have to try backup to be sure

My Acer laptop can read CD's and burn them but can't read or burn DVD's. At first it was able to read DVD's but could not burn them now it can't read them also. It's a year and half old. What is the problem and what would be the corrective action?

it could be a lazer problem ,and may need to be replaced ,the lazer can burn cd ,but not be working good enough to burn the dvd ,

where to start!!??? could be as simple as taking a can of compressed air and blowing the dust of the the metal fins and exhaust fans

All XP retail Cds are the IDENTICAL.

The only ones that arent are some OEM ones - they have the product key stored on the disk so you dont need to specify it.

as is usually the case with laptops!! most of the time !

I been using spybot for years and its safe to ,and recommended to ,remove all it finds ! don't think you will find one as good as, or as user friendly as SpyBot S& D.just scan and fix selected,so just select all.

What's all this "cd"...if you are at the a: prompt and you want to go to the c drive just type c: and then enter. Maybe I'm missing something here. Either way - you'll enjoy the live file system...pretty cool stuff.

Im sure you know this but will post it anyway ,cd is use to change directory ,used if windows was installed on the drive like," cd c:\win98" then you could run commands in the win98 folder like setup.exe !! so if you were install win98 on a computer you could first copy the win98 folder from the cdrom to the hard drive and run setup from the harddrive instead of the cdrom ,faster data transfer ,and you will never be asked to insert the win98 cd at any time after the install !!

having said that ,you don't need to use it anyway as was said above the ubuntu cd will boot and install and format the drive anyway.

First of all, you need to ditch that slow old 98 machine for a new vista machine (u can get them for 250.00 and they will be a lot faster than ur 98 machine. Second, invest in a DSL or cable internet soulution. AT&T fast access DSL is 19.99/month and same with embarq high speed, which is about the same cost as dial up, only 13X faster. With this combo, ur pc will be flying like a bee!

opinions are one thing ,but not everyone can afford what your opinion suggest .we try to help people with problems not just tell them to buy a new machine when the one they have serves there purpose ,not all areas have DSL ,maybe in you area but not in mine ,I have cable internet ,next street down from me have to use dial up, as cable stops at my street ,cable could be free and they would still have to pay for dialup ! .

Whilst the problem looking to be virus related, it turned out that there was a badly formatted DVD in one of the drives. I could not see any process activity, removing the disc solved the problem

I guess the moral is always to check the simple stuff before diving in

WoW! must re-remember that one ,I've seen laptop and desktop computers that would not boot because of that problem !!

get a new vista based pc for under 300.00 (assuming ur using a desktop pc) and save your self loads of trouble. or get a 450.00 vista notebook.

I can't format the drive since windows disk always comes up with error screen no matter what I choose.

if it not seeing the drive then its quite possiable that the drive has died!! I thrown out many that no longer function in this way !try taking it out and slaving it to another computer,to see if you can excess it .

the only thing u can do if this is bothering u is run every virus and error checking software that u can freely get off the internet, or for best results, reinstall windows. Did u back up ur registry? If so, restore it. if not, remember that after u reinstall windows (if error checking and fixing didn't work)

A word to the wise: never trust any free registry tweaking program as they are "virusy"
