Daughter's been off to college, and trying to use her old Thinkpad R31, but it asks for her user name and password, and she can't remember it.

Any way to work around this?

is that a windows password/username or the Bios password ,can you get to the windows login screen,if yes ,then boot computer while hitting the f8 key to go to safe mode ,choose administrator acct, and go to users in the control panel and remove password from you daughters user account .

you say you wanted to get a good one ,? so why did you buy a HP!! and why did you but media center if you didn't plan on using it ,
the new harddrive may need to be formatted first before you put in the bay.

The cable guy is wrong telling you need a router because of the drive ,he may be telling you if you do have more than one computer in the home you would need a router to network them .

yes you must dedicate a single disk for the program ,yes i would finalize it too.
also you cant just copy the unzipped ISO to the disk ,it has to be done right ,following the nero iso burning instructions in the link i posted above

Thanks for a prompt and thorough response.
I have Nero and used it to burn the downloaded iso file (from www.memtest86.com) to a disk. Now I have it--but as a zip file.
What am I supposed to do: Unzip and put that also on the disk? Or can it run from the disk as an iso zip file (that doesn't seem likely to me).
Can I run the iso file (unzipped) from the disk at any time I insert it or do I run the disk at boot-up?
Thanks!

no ,unzip the iso on a working computer ,then use nero to burn the iso image to disk ,put the new burnt disk into the troubled computer, and reboot computer ,it will then boot to and run the memtest at startup

i would like to be more frank and say yes you are being lied to ,sort of anyway!!!
why would you need a new harddrive just because the board is bad! !! its possible to install the drive on a different board with same chipset ,i done it just a few weeks ago, having said that it was not a new board just a different one ,one was a p3 gigabyte board and the newer one was a p4 in a Dell tower, not sure of the boards brand name . both had via chipsets .and xp boot ,with out a reload ,and is still running fine .

not so!!!!!

Removing outlook is childs playe with or without the cd! this is not the problem as such. Merely uninstalling outlook does not solve the problem. I wanted to do a clean install of outlook which meant removing all traces of outlook.

It is very easy to remove and reinstall outlook. The problem was that when you do this it maintains the previous profile. I have created a new profile and imported the pst file i wanted to keep and everything is ok. Somewhere in the bowels of outlook the old profile remains and is not removed when outlook is deleted. So i just create a new profile.

The 20Gb limit is nothing to do with this.

well im certainly not going to uninstall mine right now to find out .lol
maybe a registry edit is need to remove information of outlook, and maybe a outlook folder is left behind after the uninstall

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

there is a safety jumper on the board that needs to be set to disable so you an edit the bios .you will see it in the manual that you can download fro asus .

fist think i would do is test the power supply,,or try a new power supply .

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

Also, I've checked its not the new ram I bought, I tried it by itself, with the old ram and also the old ram by itself... no difference. In fact, I doubt at this point if there'd be any difference if I tried with no ram.

Ok,so you have new ddr2 ram ,and old ddr2 ram and you tried all together ,just checking here ,you do know that the green ram slots are for ddr3 ram ,and that you cant run ddr2 and ddr3 rame together .
when you install 2 ddr2 ram chips do you put 1 in each of the yellow slots ,as this is,i think so anyway , the proper way to install 2 sticks of ddr2 ram ,of course if you have 4 sticks of ddr2 ram you would install them in both the red and yellow slots .

!!!My2 Cents as that may be all its worth !!!

I'm sorry you were a little sharp with me.

The restriction to which I'm referring is the size of the PST file in question (and that is what my post said). This is limited by Microsoft to 2GB (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/830336) and when you hot that limit, strange things start to happen of the type you've described.

So just check your PST file size and I hope that you don't have a more serious problem than that.

a quick read of the link you provided says 2gig limit in outlook 2002 and earlier ,20 gig for 2003 and 07!!!

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

if you have no absolute control over your computer, then the only option i can think of is to reinstall windows. Just pop in ur windows dist and turn off ur comp. turn ur comp back on and press delete or f8 or sumthing like that to get into your boot setting (make sure its not your bios). Then select boot from disk or somthing to that extent. And then just follow the on screen help :)

good idea ,but don't forget to tell novice users to backup the music and pictures as all will be wiped from the hard drive when they do as you suggest .

Or you could download a program like SpinRite, boot from a floppy, and run an extensive check on your drive. Like chkdsk, it will repair many a problem on the disk.

yes ,spinrite is a good program ,but isn't free unless that changed in the past few years, and will take about 2 days to run on a big hdd,
