yes, but to no avail
maybe ram malfunction ,if you have 2 sticks ,try it with only one ,or try ram test . www.memtest86.com

have you tried moving the cdrom to another ide channel, have you tried another cdrom
add new thermal paste to the cpu maybe.how long since you built machine
also motherboard should have washer type protection built in ,notice the silver or brass colored rings around the holes on the underside/upper side of the board
try hooking devices this way ,both hdd on primary one master one slave ,and the 2 dvdrw on the secondary one master one slave .it is better to transfer file to the dvdrom from the hdd when they are on separate channels anyway
Thanks caperjack ,I found the testers at tiger direct. I will order one, or if possible find one locally.Starting there would be the smartest place to start. If it needs to be replaced would you have suggestions on what to buy or shy away from?
as for what to buy ,you will find all the info on the power supply itself , once you get in the computer to take it out if its bad .like wattage and stuff .if you do end up needing one best to take the old power supply to local shop and get a replacement
Is that the unit at back where cord plugs into?
yes it is ,I think you should take you computer into computer shop for repair .
you should get hijackthis and go to the spyware section of this forum ,and post the hijackthis log !!

but it almost seems like it could be the adapter...
]
what adapter
so i guess part of my ? is answered as you were trying to use killdisk .,you need to go to bios and change boot sequence to boot from cdrom first, then use win2000 disk to load windows.
so how old is this laptop !!????????????????????????????
first thing you need to do is rule out the power supply as the problem ,unless you own a power supply tester only way to do this is install a new/different working power supply
Hello Mikey,
I am in the same position here in Newcastle upon Tyne, UK.
In my case, the lights come on, fans spin up on everything but there is no post signal beep - are you getting any beep at all?
If it isn't beeping, it isn't posting and that is generally motherboard, cpu or psu related.
You can disconnect all drives and still get the post routines running.
If you are getting beeps, then your manual should give a legend explanation on what the beep sequence represents.
In my case I have had a faulty psu ruining a motherboard. I replaced the motherboard and it all powers up bur nowt else.
Currently I'm on the elimination trail of cpu, motherboard(even though it is new), RAM or PSU (again a new psu).
At these moments I feel like packing in the whole build game altogether and cop out and spend the shekels. Then I calm down and get on the trail again.

see what happens when you piggy back you problem in someone else's post ,people start helping you and it gets confusing for us old guys ,please post you own thread ,and people just post help for original poster here .
is this laptop as old as i find in search of internet [8 or 9 yrs ]
when you access A:\ drive what disk do you have in the drive ,cant tell you what to try if i don't know what floppy you have in the drive
Same problem here, it was shut down probably during the nite. When I turned it on
the next morning, it automatically shuts off. Sometimes I don't see the bio, or once I get
to the Windows SAFE mode page it shuts off. The more time I let it sit, the further I get, but never logon to Windows. The shorter time I give it, it shuts down randomly. I can't even let
it run in safe mode. How do we fix this?
try booting to recovery repair with winxp cd ,and then type in CHKDSK /F
sounds like a rough move ,usually what happens when people move computers is they twist the case a bit and move pci cards and ram ,so open case and reseat all pci cards and the Ram.and ied cables to the hdd and cdroms .
seen a guy pulling his hair out last 2 weeks becaouse of no display on new computer he was building ,he even sent new motherboard back to ASus ,he was using a DVI to VGA converter from computer to the vga lcd monitor ,when i told him to try it with out the adapter and on a lcd monitor with DVI ,it worked ,what type of monitor connection are you using .
cpu heating up maybe ,make sure heatsinc is applied correctly
not a software issue, like i said the hdd light will come on without any drives installed in the box
not to be picky but how can the hdd light come on with not hdd in the computer .hdd light indicates activity of hdd.are you referring to the front panel power light .
as for one of my questions in previous post ,did you try to use you winxp cd and go to recovery and run the repair i suggested .
it will even do it with no drives at all.
must be hard to load os with no hdd,lol ,this could be a software issue ,software im refering to is winxp.did you try going into recovery console and running a repair ,when there type in ,chkdsk /f
deathrunner19,
Have you checked in the bios to see if your computer is recognizing the drive? From your posting I cannot tell how much you have tried to remedy this problem. I am having the same problem but with brand new systems. Once I figure something out, I'll shoot it over to you.
thread almost 1 yr old
Havn't called tech support yet no,
I was hoping I wouldnt have to replace it :/ its new lol.
lol
Thank you for replying, if I take the battery out but leave the power lead in, the start up button doesn't even light up !!
from that im thinking that the battery then is almost dead ,just enough to turn on lights for a second ,and the power adapter isn't working at all .! because it should at least turn the lights on also, but i could be wrong
doing exactly the same with power lead in. !!
do you try power in with battery out .
with the xp install did you try the install again!! message means that the ntdll.dll file is corrupt ,retry install .
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314474
hmmm, surely if that was the case I could just have one stick in the "faulty" slot?
so did you call tech support !!
No more suggestions? :(
you could try calling tech support for the motherboard ,ph:# should be on the back page of manual
not sure .if it not causing problems ,i wouldn't worry ,
Right what I am trying to remember is which cd goes with which computer. Most were bought over the counter, some with machine?
doesn't matter what disk go with what machine ,unless as i said before ,the ones that came with machines are recovery cd's and they would be clearly marked as being so ,like Dell recovery cd ,or in my case ALC winxp Recovery cd. ,
Ok don't worry. Its fixed. The big cpu cooling fan on the processor was getting a little loose from its traveling and wasn't putting all its wait on the processor so it was over heating. the computer is on its side now so the problem has stopped as the fan is putting all its weight on the processor. Thats it in simple details
heatsinc and fan should be clamped in place for best results
It would cause problems with activation
what would cause problem with activation
don't think it has to do with my graphic cards either because even if they did get damaged, that wouldn't keep my computer from not even starting.
it sure could ,
I have also come to a conclusion that it isn't my RAM because if i power off my system totally and plug it back in and press the power button, it turns on for a split second, then if itry turning it on afterwards, it doesn't make any signs of life, so i think my RAM is telling the computer not to turn on because there is something wrong.
really ,you sure have a different opinion of ram than i do,ram memory has no info in it until computer is up and running ,its wiped clean every time you shut down computer ,so how could it be telling anyone anything .
Also ,its my gut feeling that the pop was you motherboard shorting out . ,just a gut feeling
PS. Every PC has its own XP disk and I may have mixed them up and do not know all of which ones go to what PC. Is there a way to match the disk to the computer? Thanks
only matters if any of them are computer specific winxp recovery cd's
try safe mode again with mouse plugged into ps/2.
hit f8 on bootup for safe mode
Ok
i meswell save up and get one its only 11 pound i just wanted to learn lol why i was fixing the problem:)
nothing wrong with that ,but if the drive doesen't work we cant make it work for you over the net ,wanna learn do what i did ,take it apart ,it aint hard to figure out once you remove the screws ,back together is a little different ,I threw away a few ,now i just don't bothere
good luck
its a lg burner and i burn ubuntu and it doesnt work so it couldnt be write protection any help on cleaning laser
unbuntu is free and we are encouraged to share it ,so no reason to write protect it.
I don't understand days of conversation about a bad cd-rw ,when you could just go buy a new one .here in canada i can but a LG 18x dvd -rw ,for 39.99 or less ,go out and get a Paper Route and buy a new drive and save yourself all this grief!lol
Thank you so much!
does that mean it worked for you !!
best thing to do would be to go out and buy a floppy drive. also i not sure if its going to be possiable to boot from the pci device
try safe mode[reboot computer ,then hitting F8 continually ] and do a system restore back to the day before you became a computer programmer. lol
where abouts in the bios? and would it beep if i hadnt set it to dual?
read you motherboard manual
What the f//k is wrong?
WHAT YOU FU_K,
you did everyone of these tips !!thats whats wrong !!! and probably all at the same time, there was a time when i would do foolish things like that too,but learned to leave whats not broken alone just because someone says ,"hey do this "
don't know if its the best ,but Norton Ghose worked for me ,i have my xp home chosted with norton antivirus , and microsoft office and and much more installed .takes about 18-20 min to reinstall windows
echo! echo
maybe a ram setting in the bios, some boards need to be set for dual channel ,
the data ? can't be answered until you remove harddrive and install in second computer as a slave of connect with usb /ide/sata device.
also you could have someone check it out and advice how to continue ,i have seen power hit dialup modems and network card cause this problem ,computer wouldn't boot until i removed affected device
not sure if it matters but the board is lists as using DDR2-400/667/800 memory, you bought 533 might make a difference !!also check ot the below copy /past from a site i found when searching you mothereboard name !!
It has two DDR-DIMM sockets, accepting up to 16 GB of DDR2-400/667/800 memory. Please pay very close attention here. ECS should have used different colors on the memory sockets to let you know that this motherboard supports DDR dual channel feature. You need to install two identical memory modules in order to achieve the maximum performance this motherboard can provide.
Of course people that buy a socket AM2 motherboard knows that the CPU memory controller is capable of running under dual channel mode, but using the same color on both sockets may lead users to think that this motherboard uses single channel mode. Several users may install only one memory module on this motherboard because of this, reducing the PC performance.
So with this motherboard you need to always use two identical memory modules in order to use dual channel feature, which increases the system performance.
Why bother paying 499. when all I may have to invest is maybe $160? Are you nuts?
the update in laptops is worth the little bit extra ,also you tried a
new board all ready ,I'll bet the seller of the 160 dollar one won't give you a refund after you try it and it doesn't work .
hello, you drivers for sound and video ,using Everest, you can find the info you need to get the right drivers .
