You may still be able to go to the recycle bin and restore the folders deleted and then go to add/remove programs and uninstall them the proper way .

All my cards/rams/drives are in properly and because there is only the 1 hd it has its master drive jumper set.

Me Again ,try removing all unnecessary cards ,like network ,modem sound ,floppy cdrom s. ect ect ,if you have more than one stick of ram remove and reinstall one at a time ,after you try rebooting computer

Some newer cd drives can't be detected because the windows 98 cd does not have the drivers for them. To fix this try an older cd drive or one that the drivers can be loaded in DOS mode.

Gregh ,you should check the date on the post above yours ,no response since aug /05 ,im sure thatthe problems was fixed of they through the system out the window by now lol

Yeah ,you should be a little weary of opening it unless you really know what you are doing,not much to be seen untill you take it completely apart .then what ?? you ahve to fiddle and put it all back together.You could open it and look for build up of dirt in the cpu fan ,heatsinc.
You say that hooking it to another monotor only worked once ,to me that means that windows is not running/working ,no video to display .
If you are not sure about what to do after you open ,maybe you should take it to computer repair shop!!

did you remove the battery and try turning it on with just the power cord plugged in to it .

K, i took out one of my RAM sticks and it boots up now.I think you were right

Sometimes ram just needs to be reseated ,also you can clean the connectors with a white eraser.be carefull not to damage ram ,make sure you unplugg you computer ,hold the power button in in for about 20 seconds to dran power supply , before removing and installing ram .

oh and i cant hear the cpu running either.

I assume you mean cpu fan !fan usually only runs for a few seconds when booting ,then comes on when laptop heates up ,could be that you battery is dead ,try removing it and turn on computer with it out just the power cord plugged in

You have num lock turned on ,the ijklmnop keys are set as number keys .
should be a key along the top row to change this ,look for one with numlock on it or something like that .may even be a keypad icon on it ,
,using the FN key on the bottom row and the key on the top row together to make the change .

Try booting with a win98 bootdisk , type in fdisk and delete any non dos partitions or dos partitions and greate a new partition , reboot format the drive from the floppy ,then reboot with winxp in the cdrom .

I was just grasping at straws ,maybe it has to do with video drivers ,i know with my pc if i don't have correct drivers for my video card with svideo out it will not show the second screen in the video properties .I had a laptop with svideo out that i could have looked at how it works but sold it the other day .

for you brother to see his folder get him to follow this path .

He will need to go to tools in mycomputer ,folder options /view and check to show all hidden files and folders to find this path .

Computer freezes up every time after viewing two or three web pages (like in the 1980s). First month I could go to C:\Windows\Temporary Internet Files and delete everything and all would be OK. This week that has no effect.

Open IE go to tools /internet options /advanced ,scroll down to browsing section and check of to empty temp internet folder when you close the browser ,save you from having to empty it manually .
Also make sure you have latest windows/and IE updates install on you computer

you say you have 2 partitions ,what partition has the most free space ,change the location of the paging file to the partion with the most free space and make it bigger

Try this ,open internet explorer ,go to tools/internet options/advanced ,in the browsing section make sure that,disable script debugging[internet explorer ] and disable script debugging[other] are checked off ,they should be the 4th and 5th in the list .

You will need to go the usb storage device manufactors site and get the win98 drivers for it .

what I would do get another harddrive any size just one that works install it load windows on it ,if it runs then a fresh in stall on thecorrupt dive might fix your problem,
or go to this site get a copy of Knoppix on CD and boot to it and if you computer runs your ram is ok

OK, go to www.bootdisk.com ,get a win98 bootdisk, copy to floppy ,boot you computer with it,at the command prompt type, FDISK , if you have it setup NTFS ,and not FAT ,go to[3]delete partition and delete non dos partition ,then run you xp cd to format the partition and install winxp

when you put in the xp cd go to install winxp and when you get there, delete the partition ,create a new partiton and reformat the drive then install xp

Its normal for the fan to spin fasten when playing a game because the cpu is heating up .not normal to make extra noice ,Oil might help ,i would get a new fan ,most likely damage already done from dust/dit in fan .oil only quick fix .Replace

Hello, I want to restart my dell computer and erase evrything from my hard drive. I have alot of old junk so I tried deleting everything. Folders and diffirent things. Its slow and freezes after two minutes of turning it on. My computer starts and then turns off and a blue screens pops up saying that there was an error. What can I do? I do have the CD's that came with the computer. :sad: PLease help.

You will need to contact Dell for a replacement recovery CD
