I recently bought Windows XP Professional with Service Pack2 but a can not install it every time you try it tells you that there has been a data error or a cyclic redundancy check when installing i have tried another copy and the same message comes up any suggtions

This is a copy paste from another site .What it means is you have a bad xp disk ,take it back for replacement .

If something goes wrong with the data between the time it leaves the source and arrives at its destination, the CRC sent at the source will no longer match the one that is calculated when the data arrives - this is when the cyclic redundancy check error will appear.

If it trying to update something ,it must be showing something on the screen to tell you what its trying to update . ,???
If not try this , ctrl+alt+del ,then processes ,what processs is using the most cpu usage !

well first thing this is DaniWeb fourm not compaq So we don't have a compaq recovery cd , second a recovery cd will not recover the files for you ,but it may be used to repair your windows insstall ,it will wipe the drive clean and start over fresh ,you need to have laptop repaired or have someone remove the hdd and backup the files for you ,

The cd doesnt have to be the one installed on you machine the product keya is what counts,i repair computers and use one winxp cd to instsll on all computers and use the key on the lapop bottom or computer tower case.
this program will list the key used on your laptop, just download and install and run to cross refernce the key used and the key on the bottom of you laptop

maybe you need to go to device manager ,right click on mycomputer properties/device manager ,are there any red or yellow makes indicating bad devices ,see if the cdrom shows in there ,delete it if it does ,also check in there for sound device ,delete it also if you have adisk with drivers for it ,then reboot computer and reload drivers .

I not a real user of Linux but have used Knoppix live cd ,I burned Puppy to cd boot to it and then made a dvd multisession folling instructions on the link below .,I liked it a lot,still fooling with it from time to time

how did you deleted the partition ???
,when you remove a partition you need to then create a new one ,before you can format harddrive ,i assume you used FDISK to delete the partion so useing fdisk again creat a new partition .then restart computer and format the drive

Sounds like you need to reinstall you sound card drivers .!

Also keep in mind that i had an AGP 6800 that ran fine before i tried this one. So the AGP slot works fine.

My search of your new card shows it as a pci-e card and not a AGP card !!now Thats not to say that they don't a AGP version by the same name

Edit ,just found reference to one and it was AGP ,so maybe the second one is falty also !!

You can reinstall win98 over itself, with out formating .boot computer with a win98 boot disk at the a:\ prompt type in, [ren c:\win.com win.old ],not a space after ren, with out the brackets ,then hit enter.then atthe A:\ prompt type [setup], with out the brackets.
when it come to where to install windows it will say C:\windows000 ,click other location and take out the 3 zeros and hit OK to copy windows over itsself

Most socket 370's rareley go beond 1.0, some go to about 1.14 or there about ,you will need to change the motherboard to achive higher cpu.

I can go to wesites that are saved in my favorites. But when I type, it tells me that it could not find the URL, eventhough it is spelt right.

first if they are in your favorites why not just click on the link in your favorites ,or it maybe that the page no longer excists .Or,
If you are typing them in on another computer ,why not just copy your favorites folder to a floppy or USB Flash drive and run them on the other computer from the floppy or usb drive .

There should be a monitor connection on the back of you laptop , Blue/Black but marked monitor ,and there should be a key at the top of you keyboard to switch between the two,in compo with the FN key and a key with two monitors on it one big ,one small .

What i would try is remove the side cover to you case and run the computer like that ,it won't heat up as fast ,also just because the fan is spinning doesn't meant it spinning fast enough ,also you power supply needs a fan ,if its not working it will eventually burn out the power supply.if computer runs with the side off ,then its time to buy some new fans

It's A joke .Read it slowly !!!and don't delete all the files on you computer ,yet wait 10 min!!

You can save created Data,music,your IE favorites MYDocuments ,e-mails ,Addressbook ect ect . and stuff you downloaded from the net ,but not installed programs[you will need to re-install them after the format ] to the partition ,there is a lot of work to a re-install of windows ,mostly reinstalling all you programs ,as for drivers ,make sure you have the disks that came with computer or download needed drivers from the net and save to D:\

The device brand name is Edge with Samsung hard drive in to. There is no disk for win98 supply with it. I have no problem with winxp. It just instal without needing an external software.

Usually the CD-rom units have a small hole in the front panel to "force" eject the cd. Don't know if it's the case anymore since I am using a laptop, but when I used a desktop computer I would insert a needle in the small hole and it would open.

The usb device should have come with the drivers on a disk for win98,is it a Samesung usb device or just a device with a samsung drive in ,if so what is the brand name of the device .

any chance that you have 2 cd roms and you are not putting the winxp disk in the cdrom set to master .

first I don't use a mac ,just wondering if you can use a usb 2.0 device for file storage ,new 40 gig toshiba harddrive ,not formated yet , with Mack laptop,is it possible or does the harddrive need to be for a mac or can it just be formated mac file system ?????????? thanks

I did download that the Ewido and scan clen remove everything it said should be removed but when i try to install Norton it still say the same thing "setup was unable to update the ....."like before.
About the 20-40 gs harddrive my dad has one but i don't know how to transfer files to that harddrive and i don't even know how to remove everything on mine and reinstall windows :cheesy: Sirry i'm a donkey

Heres what i would try ,just did it with a laptop that had much the same problem as you are having
.reboot ,hitting the f8 key to go to safe mode ,choose safe mode with networking ,and you should be able to connect to the net .and run the online virus scans ,not just one of them 2 or 3 .
you should also get hijackthis and go to the security section of this fourm ,
as for moving files from you laptop to another hard drive you could try a usb dada transfer cable they sell here[Canada ] for about 30 dollars or less

download ie 6.0 and install ,it should overwrite and fix proplems.then go to windows updates and update it

just a tip about sfc /scannow,its just SFC for win98,and you can do it through start/run at anytime ,using the cd or with the cab folder to repace files

Sounds more like a hardware issue than a software one!

if they are using winxp just boot to safe mode and go the real adminacct and change the password on the other ,or create a new acct.

Thanks for the info and I'll try this next. Quick question though.... I followed your link to MS downloads and I can't seem to locate any MS location or link that will let me just download a copy of SP2 to burn to a disk. I have to use my computer at work to do this because my home pc won't access the internet now that I have it screwed up. The only way that I can find to download SP2 is to use MS auto update tool and that seems to just want to update or upgrade the pc directly and not give me the option to download a copy to a folder or my desktop.

Please help, I got this message out of the blue "Printer operation cannot continue due to lack of resources. The print subsystem is unavailable". I've tried restarting the service and it starts for about 1 minute then stops again.

then do a fresh install of you windows and load the SP2 first thing after the fresh install.not a fresh install will wipe out everything on you computer so make backups of important info on you computer.

Hi, I'm running Windows XP and have multiple accounts going using Fast User Switching. I'm looking for a method to turn off the message that says "Other people are logged on to this computer. Shutting down Windows might cause them to lose data. Do you want to continue shutting down?" whenever I shut down the computer. Is there a registry hack or something to prevent that dialog box from displaying?

Hi don't know the reg edit for the message but here what i found on the net and did to shutdown quick ,create a new shortcut on you desk to and put this in when asked ,

%windir%\system32\shutdown.exe -s -t 00

,this will create a quick shutdown icon ,use it tho turn off computer

No not really but you could go to your local computer store and buy the cd.
as for the modem you could download the drivers from the manufactors web site .
