All I can say to that is Strange!

do a install over the orignal ,to do so do the following ,choose to install winxp the first time asked instead of repair !,the second time it comes up dont hit enter to install , hit R to do a repair instead ,it will actually install windows over it self .

did you try setting it to take no action in auto play ,in properties of the drive in mycomputer,then selecting a different action the next time you put in a blank cd-rw

so to anyone who reads this if you sell used computers at a resonable price and do not take advantage of your customers than i appload you, though ive never met a used dealer who did.

what is you, E:\ drive a cdrom ,does it show up in device manager if so delete it and reboot windows to see if it loads the drive ,also you maybe missing mother board device drivers after the format any yellow !! in the device manager ,

for those wanting to install windoes over itself,you may be confrunted with the win.com error ,to fix this go back to A:\ and type in,
REN c:\windows\win.com win.old , hit enter and try install again .note there is a space between the REN and the c:\ also one between, win.com and win.old

all devices i know of to used to transfer files will need software installed to do so ! one way would be to remove hdd and connect to a laptop hdd to desktop ide converter and transfer all file to the hdd then put it back in the laptop and run there install .

if you buy a new computer the hard drive can be installed into it and you can access those files. dont quote me 100% on that because the hard drive may actually be dead which i doubt but if it is only a software crash it shouldnt be an issue. the only way to tell is to try.

on second hand computers NEVER BUY A SECOND HAND COMPUTER. EVER!!!! why spend $400 on something that is years old and out of date when you can buy a new one with a year warranty for $400 i sell computers at a major retail chain and im not going to sit here and try to sell you one but you will thank yourself for not wasting your money. also you said your not an expert 99% of people who sell second hand computers love people like you, again so do 99% of new computer sellers but at least then when they lie through there teeth you can still call the manufacturer and get help.

Hi ,i sell and repair and service secondhand computers ,and if my customer has a problem they can call me ,not the manufactor .
as for buying a used computer for 400$ when you can buy a new one for 400$ would make no sence at all .
Im in canada ,the local new computer store sell new for 750$ bottom of the line ,I sell used for 200-400$ [ older well built computers ]or less …

The read and write permissions weren't an issue. If you read my post you will see that i said i had set them properly. Not hard to figure that one out, i don't need a tutorial to tell me how to do that. :P

you don't need a player to load music on a mp3 player ,you need mp3 files on you computer either from a download or ripp them from a cd,you can use Audiograbber to rip them from a cd and make mp3 then all you need to do is copy them to the player through windows explorer .

I installed advant browser just to have a look ,uninstall it ,one look was enough .after uninstall my IE desktop icon became a shortcut to the printer options,and if you clicked it it would print the content of my home page ,i fixed that by deleting and putting a new icon on the desktop with desktop customising in desktop properties ,the problem now is ,if i tey to create a short cut of any webpages they all become IE shortcut icons,but all they do is print the page when you click on them never taking you to the website .also this is the same on both useers[admins] that are setup on this computer thanks

sorry ,never heard of bios guardian ,a jumper is a little plastic,metal inside device[usually black or blue, about 1/8"in size ] use to open and close a group of pins on the board .
You nee the mothernoard manual ,if you don't have one ,try finding the manfactor and model of you board ,and search there site for one

Yeah, the Linux method is pretty handy in situations where Windows-based tools just don't work. In terms of grabbing the data off of a hosed drive, the Knoppix package does also have burning programs, so if you've got another CD-ROM in the system you could burn the data to discs locally.

Thats good to know ,will knoppix recognize a USB Burner if there isn't a internal burner .

When I got to the client's site I stuck in the Knoppix CD, booted from it, and it automagically detected the crippled Windows hard drive. It also auto-detected and configured his network card, so I just set up file/folder sharing with another healthy Windows computer on his network and did a network copy of the data on the crippled system's drive to a folder on the good computer. No muss, no fuss, all data saved.

So ,Im gessing that along with the knoppix cd [witch i have ]]you need a good drive to copy to ,right ,like if the computer is not on a network ,you would need to add another drive to the computer to copy the data to , right .
Don't meant to butt in ,just trying to learn how to do this in case i need too backup for someone .someday .thanks

you need to get into the bios/setup ,on boot up hit del key or maybe the f1 or f2 keys usually for del .it usuall tells you on bootup screen .when in there do a auto detect harddrive ,save changes ans exit .if noting un plug computer ,open case and remove cables from hdd and motherboard ,and then reinstall to both and check around for anyother loose conections

A rather annoying problem has developed on bootup. Occasionally, the system freezes just before the AVG icon ususally appears in the system tray. I'm running Windows 98. Could anyone help with simple straightforward instructions?

uninstall zone alarm ,get windows updates to sp2 if you don't all ready have it ,and use sp2s' firewall ,also get a good virus scan program ,i haven't use zone alarm for years ,didn't know it was a virus detector!

did you get a cd with mp3 player ,if so did you load drivers first ,also what is the brand name

did you try booting into safe mode ,hit f8 on bootup

try this ,at the a:\ type in "sys c" with out the "" and hit enter ,reboot computer and see if it boots into winme

at the a:\ type in fdisk ,then yes ,then 4 and check the status of the drive ,if fdisk doesn't open then there is something wrong with the drive

Without knowing just what the status of the drive is ,if its still recognized by the bios,and dos ,this porgram is a good one .
