The entire DaniWeb style is very custom, including the idea of having the post in a little speech bubble. Of course, we're using vBulletin's postbit template (introduced in vBulletin 3.0) instead of postbit_legacy template (popular in vBulletin 2.x series), which has the username and everything on the left instead of …

I'm sorry to hear all of that. Are you sure you didn't accidentally infect yourself with some type of virus or trojan which just started acting up now?

I am also confused what the incentive is. It seems that it would be really hard for the system to grow to any scale that would deliver a relatively substantial number of visitors to any of the websites. Or am I just missing something?

Same here. I always use the www and encourage anyone who links to DaniWeb to do the same. Check out phpAdsNew - it's a free ad management system. I don't know of any that primarily deal with bidding and cost-per-click campaigns - most are for banner campaigns, in which case, payment is usually made in advance.

I'm also getting an error with attachments, so I will look into that in a few minutes. I really don't think it's too dangerous of an option because you're not really deleting anything serious ... just your listing of people you want quick access to know when they're online. It's …

I'm an IE 6 user. However, I have FireFox installed but mainly use it just to test out DaniWeb and make sure it's 100% cross-browser compatible.

I think certifications, as well as a degree to some point, will only give you book knowledge. You actually need to go out and DO to get the experience, and that's what jobs are looking for more than anything. Now myself, I'm sorry to say I hold no certifications :( …

Sorry, I fail to see the unethical aspect to search engine indexing and crawling. The way that I see it, Google provides you with a service. They send you free traffic. You have the option of not receiving this free traffic by using a robots.txt file. However, if you enjoy …

Aside from backlinks, they're really good for viral marketing, because blog entries and press releases and the sort get syndicated throughout the web.

Better late than never! :) While our C and C++ forum is more popular, our .NET forums just need a bit more care from people who are knowledgeable enough to help. For example, the VB.NET forum has some recently posted threads that are still unanswered. *hint hint*

Yes, that's fine. If you're sending an e-newsletter via a server-side script, be sure to set the doctype of the page to HTML. You don't want people to receive plain text emails that are full of html code that is unparsed.

100% on an ad campaign on DaniWeb :) Seriously, it would really have to do with your business model. Is it a content based site where revenue is earned from selling advertising? Do you sell a product or service? If I were selling an eCommerce product, for example, I would …

Increasing your cost per click will drastically increase the number of clicks you get. However, it may cause you to use up your budget but get less bang for your buck. What I recommend doing is increasing your cost per click for a short while, while making full use of …

I would not suggest trying this unless there is a really good core community there. I also think that doing this won't work with all communities. A good first step is to start with a paid sponsorship which, say, eliminates all advertising on the site. See how much interest there …

You don't need to be a programmer to set up a forum. :) You just need to know how to install web-based software (but don't worry, it comes with instructions.)

I often frequent conventions and seminars where I hand out these spiffy looking business cards. In addition, I recently purchased and sent a handful of business cards - with their names on them - to both tgreer and kc0arf to hand out in person, as well.

How about offering some type of "reward" in exchange for submitting new sites? For example ... list the latest five sites added to your homepage. Webmasters might submit their own sites in exchange for some temporary fame on your homepage. Or, perhaps you can run a "special" where members who …

I'm not sure about any particular SEO products, but odds are that no matter what you use, the search engines can figure out it's something automated, and might shy against that. Since you brought up Aaron, check out his tools.seobook.com for some really good free tools that often come in …

I disagree :) I like domain names that are unique words because those are most brandable and you can actually coin your own word. Think about the biggest e-companies in the world: eBay, Google, Amazon, Alexa, Yahoo!, Mozilla, Overture ... None of these words had a meaning before - and …
