Hello And Welcome To Daniweb :)
This is really strange.
Your HDD is fine, so it's not that, RAM at 1 Gb is sufficient to run Vista, You don't have any nasties in your system. mmm indeed.
How old is this laptop? Is it still in warranty?
Maybe.....
But congrats Bennet, i don't really see how Dani can trust you of all people as Mod :D , but there ya go. It's not my decision :P
Short Aardvarks Vex Even Salamanders :P
Which ones are you concerned about?
The top AVG entry is concerning my slightly taking up 92Mb of your 512Mb RAM. Also 50% of your CPU speed at that time the printscreen was taken up by another AVG component. Are you able to configure your AVG to stop taking up so much of your resources, by disabling certain parts of it. Like scanning when booting, and other options.
After looking at your printscreen i have calculated that you are using ~449Mb of 512Mb limit! Did you have any programs running when you looked at your Task Manager? Or was Task Manager the only program running?
If this is a work laptop, does the company that you work for have a IT department? Most likely seeing as you are just the user of the laptop, there is likely to be someone in your company who has admin rights on every machine. I would be tempted to contact your works IT department and find someone who is your administrator.
A thing to look for:
Goto Control Panel -> Sounds & Audio Devices -> select the 'Hardware' tab.
Is there anything written in the Hardware box? If there is click on it and press troubleshoot. Then follow the help wizard. The process may be slightly different because you have vista. ATi Graphics only relates to your graphics card, so is not sound related. Also if you have any headphones, try plugging them into the laptop to see if sound is coming out through them.
Might be an idea doing a system restore if neither of the above options help you. But that is a last case scenario. I would as both Odie and Boblarson suggested is too check all your drivers for your sound card if you have one, and make sure you have the drivers installed. Another option could be to simply remove your sound card and reseat it into its slot again, it may not have been far enough in.
Hello and Welcome to Daniweb Mithun!
Take a look at our Software Development forum:

All you need to know is in there.
Hello and Welcome to Daniweb
Seems that your hard-drive looks to be the problem.
I would advise doing the following as this website shows:
http://www.pcstats.com/articleview.cfm?articleid=1583&page=5
If anything on that website is not clear then please post back here again. I would recommend the second option using command prompt.
What is your Internet Speed? Dial Up, Broadband, Cable Broadband? If you have the speed of the connection, such as 2.2Mbps, that could be helpful. Are you running Windows Vista or XP?
When you hit ctrl+alt+del are you looking under the processes tab? This is where it shows all of the current tasks. Look for the tasks which are draining heavily on the Mem usage bar.
Hi Spawner :)
Right what you could try is adding bf2stats.nl to the trusted websites area of IE7. This is done by the following:
Click on Tools -> Internet Options -> Security -> Then Click on Trusted Websites, and add http://www.bf2stats.nl to that list of trusted sites.
This might work.
Right that error message relates to the following article:
"A problem occurred within NTFS.SYS, the driver file that allows the system to read and write to NTFS file system drives. There may be a physical problem with the disk, or an Interrupt Request Packet (IRP) may be corrupted. Other common causes include heavy hard drive fragmentation, heavy file I/O, problems with some types of drive-mirroring software, or some antivirus software. I suggest running ChkDsk or ScanDisk as a first step; then disable all file system filters such as virus scanners, firewall software, or backup utilities. Check the file properties of NTFS.SYS to ensure it matches the current OS or SP version. Update all disk, tape backup, CD-ROM, or removable device drivers to the most current versions."
In plain and simple terms, something is wrong with your hard-drive. Either it has too many fragmented parts (bits where there is no data are scattered through where there is data) or a part of your Hard-drive has become corrupt. The first thing i would now suggest doing is to run a disc defragment. This is done like this:
Go to Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> Disc Defragmenter. First close all other open running programs, then click the analyse button. Once it has analysed your system, press the defragment button to start the process. This will take a long time depending on how much of your Hard-drive you are using. Also if you use a Screen Saver, …
Hijack this log details are shown here:
http://www.daniweb.com/forums/thread83821.html
That is the latest version of hijack this. Download it and run it, you should get a text document at the end of it, with a complete list of various things in it. Please post the entire contents of the log into to a post and post it here.
If you are unsure about how to run hijack this post back to this thread, and I'll see if i can get crunchie to give you a hand with how to run it.
mmm
Those error codes arn't ones that i am familiar with. Were there any codes that looked like the following:
"0x000000XX" (X meaning any number or a letter)
Or
"0xX0000XXX (X meaning any number or a letter)
Those are the parts that i can diagnose. If you are also able to perform a HiJackthis Log of your system, this can help people like CaperJack and Crunchie to see if any spyware/malware/virus is causing your BSOD. Just as a side thought, have you got the latest drivers for all the hardware in your system? Such as graphics cards, other PCI devices or USB devices.
Have you had the blue screen since? If you do get it again, please note down or take a picture with a camera of the error message that starts with "0x000....". Are you able to boot into Safe Mode? Press F8 continuously at startup. I would uninstall the Iplayer if you can get into the computer. Do this either through their uninstaller, or use Add/remove programs in control panel.
Open up your case and look where your gfx (graphics) card plugs into your motherboard. On the side of the slot it will say "PCI-E x16" if it is a modern PCI-E slot. If you do have AGP, you still can buy high end graphics cards, but they will cost you slightly more than a PCI-E card.
I don't really like Football/Soccer to be honest, i mean i watch the international matches, but i really don't care much. Basketball, now there's a proper sport :P Action all the way!
Go Guildford Heat! :)
How much RAM does your laptop have? Are you running any other programs while you are browsing online?
Also how do you connect to the internet? Wireless, or wired connection?
You get food poisoning
I put a grilled cheese sandwich
Yes, in a way....
Do you like Norton Anti-Virus
->My answer would of course be NO :D
D, is a name if you add 'ee' to the end.
What type of Speed Wireless Router are you using? G, G+, N ?
The X1600XT ~ Got it for £40 :P
Boy am I good at bartering....
I meant take a picture with a camera :P A BSOD is just a way of your computer telling you something is wrong and then it shuts down your system. If you could get the code that would look like "0x000..." if you can get that line code, your problem can be diagnosed.
I used Netscape way back at my old school, didn't like it very much :D
Welcome To Daniweb!
Looks like Daniweb is going to suit you :)
Welcome To Daniweb Sean.
I've been here since march last year, and i like Dream Theater best :)
The Red hot chillies are also a very good band in my view.

Glad you could join us!
If you can take a note of the BSOD (blue screen of death) message, take a picture would be the easiest option in your case. Home Basic is not the best version of Vista in my opinion, so well done for moving upwards! Also as caperjack said earlier, i would recommend getting some more RAM for you laptop; check out this link to find out what your Laptop supports:
http://www.crucial.com/systemscanner/loader.aspx?Agree=Yes
Download the scanner and run it from your desktop and the crucial website will tell you what RAM your laptop supports, and if you like you can buy them from crucials website or take their information and use it elsewhere.
If you press ctrl+alt+del when it is not frozen, what are the processes running on your system?
Go to the 'Processes' tab and make the task manager box quite big then do a print-screen of what it shows. Also to make it easier for us, could you press the column marked 'CPU' and arrange it so the most memory draining applications are shown at the top ~ the largest percentage. Please have nothing else running on your system apart from the task manager.
Have you done a Microsoft update since you reformatted it back from XP to Vista?
Try Microsoft Update rather than Windows update, you might get some more options available. Just to make sure you don't have anything in your system virus/spyware wise, i would download and install the free version of AVG anti-virus from here and also install and run their anti-spyware tool from here
These can be uninstalled once the scans have been completed. Please update the products first before you run the scans.
