i think you can also install the drivers using something like Automatix of EasyUbuntu - They definately have the nVidia ones so it stands to reason that it shouldf work (also provides options for installing dvd/mp3 support etc...)

it may in fact be a trojan they are known to turn off virus scanners or a previus trojan has been killed but has left your scanner crippled or the scaner is just buggy

yeah WMP is picky about devices e.g Media player 9 and 10 and 11 beta 1 worked with my WM2003 PocketPC PDA but 11 beta 2 and 11 say its too old ( less than 4 yrs!) same goes for cd burners
