!just to add ,an AMD [and a intel to i think]cpu can over heat and fry in a second if you remove the heatsinc and fan .mine did older 1 gig chip

windows xp manages the page file ,it can be a different size every time you look, i think , do i think you should upgrade you processor t o 1 gig ,no, waste of money in my opinion and a 500 that you have now running xp and 128 meg ram ,is just totally nuts !,get something bigger computer are cheap now . unless you are running a AMD processor you will need to get a new motherboard to go from 500 ,to 1 gig anyway

many here ,make sure you get one that says 2x-4x ,not 8x i don't think 8x will work for you ,its ok if its says 2x4x 8x ,that means it will run as all 3 speeds .

its the best way though. An image like ghost etc... wont work if the motherboard gets swapped

it will if you uninstall chips set drives and remove IDE channel or something like that before you create it,it doesent detect the mothereboard or harddrives untill after it runs the first time .! ., i have a chost of winxp someone made and gave me a few years ago , with open office and free antivir and winzip trial,and some other software install and it had never failed me when i used it to install xp on different computers,so it can be done

no that not what that means ,i wasn't talking to you ! your case may be different .you can do what you want to do, but you need to use boot manager software ,but if the drive have been in other different computers you will most likely need to do a fresh install !

locked you say, might just mean the options are not there because the board is not overclockable because it just a low end computer and the tower isn't really big enough to handle the extra cooling devices needed for most overclocking .

i have used norton ghost years ago ,you can install all you program and what ever and then install and used ghost to creat an image of hte drive ,

try google and search overclocking ,just because it can take a can be 3.2 . doesn't mean the motherboard has overclocking ability's,specially low end computers

Would not having a CMOS battery actually cause any problems? I was thinking that the computer would just be slow to boot up as it has to rescan the hardware every time it is booted. And the time may have to be reset. Besides that I'm not sure that there would be any problems. Unless the manufacturer of the motherboard made it so it will not run without a CMOS battery.

no,as long as its[computer ] kept plugged in to the power outlet ,the bios info is saved ,if you have a removed or dead battery and you unplug the towwer the info will go back to defaults

It depends what the data is worth to you !

and if it fell out when you were changing ram ,you are far to rough on your computer when working on it , as for removing power cable before removing the battery you should be more concerned that you did that when changing your ram, that could cause far more problem that removing you battery with the power plugged in !

and you only need to do one or the other ,remove battery or used the bios jumper ,not both

solid plan!

what shows on the disk in windows explorer ,hit the windows key +e [windows key on the lower left of keyboard between alt and ctry ]and open explorer and click on the cdrom drive containing the file ,you could then use edit and select all and copy and copy them to a new folder .

yeah, you can hook to his computer and format it .i do that all the time .just right click on the drive when it shows up in mycomputer ,chose format

not sure what you mean by clicked out,assume you mean it mad a clicking sound and shutdown.
if it was the power supply it would shutdown in safe mode as well in my opinion ,could be something like video card overheating ,safe mode runs in vga mode and doesn't load you video drivers

i have never seen it before ,maxtors maxblast does low leve format ,but if the mxtor software you tried didn't see the drive then you may be just dealing with a dead drive ,and nothing is going to see it!

You can't ,I repeat Can't load a hadrive from another computer with window on it already ,unless it has the exact same motherboard or at leat the same chipset installed on the drive !, it will not boot!period

Not likely ,even if you took it out you should still be able to boot to cdrom and try and install winxp ,it would just tell you no hard drive found .
