when you tried your buddies ,did you remove your existing ram and just try his , or just try you new ram with out your old installed .

sound to me like the Acer had a bad hard drive too

could be a heating problem have you ever cleaned the dust off the fans and heatsinc. using a can of compressed air

after the restore ,did it boot for you and then stop booting ,or after the restore it just hasn't boot completely yet . if no to last / ,did you try and do the restore again ,as something obviously went wrong

hi, try this go to Start/control panel /region and language ,location, might fix it for you . you might have to put control panel in classic view to find it quickly

its an asus board made for HP, and made cheaply ,so im with above poster ,likely only has on board video .and no pci-e or agp .

some dells have f11 or f12 to choose boot device ,maybe

this is what i do ,i find it best to create a folder[call it aadownloads so its first in the list, easier to find ] in the mydocuments folder ,create a shortcut on the desktop to it !
edit firefox to download to the aadownloads folder .simple as that .
to edit firefox just go tools/options/main/ in download area ,browse and direct it to the aadownloads folder in mydocs .

you don't say what the battery life is ,to say its to low is not enough , you also don't say what you are doing on battery and what power settings you have for when you are on battery , what did dell say the battery life would be,it would have been in the laptop specifications

did you google[search the net ] for partition programs

the desktop is only a file[desktop.ini] created to store each users identity and shortcut icons ,preference/settings ,and i had mine become corrupt once and was luck i didn't store file there .and there are viruse and other nasties that can affect the desktop.ini file and also something in regards ti the size the file can get ! or something like that

This is horrible, I insert the only disc I have that my boss gave me and it is actually a recovery disc!

It erase all the data in the computer and what most horrible is that the accounts records are all gone! Is there anyway for me to recall the data?

sorry to hear that ,I only told you what disk is was looking for ,not to do a recovery ,had a few other things for you to try first [too late now],and any office computer should be backed up daily .there are data recovery options ,but you will need to take the computer to a good computer repair shop to try and get you data

The files in your desktop can be accessed by other users with admin accounts.

just as a tip ,you should never store files on your desktop ,reason ,if the desktop file becomes corrupt you will lose all the files

improper shutdown,windows didn't save some settings ,you could try booting to the winxp cd ,hit "R" for recovery console and type in "chkdsk /p/f " with out the quotes and there is a space between k and /

did you shut it down properly ,by using the start /shutdown ,or did you do it via the power switch

this means that the computer is not seeing you harddrive any more ,could be a corrupt windows install or a bad harddrive ,are you in a small or big office ,do you have an IT department .
this disk its looking for is your windows install disk!

update to IE7 and use tab browsing ,or download and use Firefox tab browsing

It was a doosie and it took me a few to figure it out, but none the less I figured it out for my pc and problem. As the rest of you did I as well recieved the same message. I went to the manufacturer website (for me it was dell) and went to the support section clicked on driver downloads and looked for the audio drivers. Luckily there was only 2 of them. I clicked on the first one and it did not work, but I then went back after trying everything else in this string of replies and clicked on the second one and wala it worked. Now I have sound as though I had never lost it. I would suggest trying the same if you have proprietary equipment, otherwise you should go to the website of the manufacturer of the sound card that you have. Also if you have a motherboard with onboard audio and you are trying to use an added soundcard then you might want to try to disable the onboard audio. Anyway hope this helps someone.

glad that worked for you ,but most here had a different problem as installing correct drivers did not fix it ,i even changed sound devices and it still didn't fix it for me!

perhaps because the 4 pin is shorting out the board or there is a short in the board

make sure that the heatsinc is firmly connected to the cpu

well it is hardware,and i don't think you will find anyway of changing it as it is built into the motherboard.did a search and find you asking this in 2 more fourms and getting the same answers !

Yes , Superantispyware and malwarebytes.. link to both in my signature and also spywareblaster ,it doesn't do a scan but adds bad sites to IE and Firefox security sections ,so install it and keep it upto date .

Thank you. But I want to increase the video memory, not the RAM memory. The video memory is currently 2 MB and I need at least 4MB to run an application.

THe video card is NeoMagic MagicMedia 256AV. But I do not know how to access the video card and also if the memory for the video card can be upgraded

of course you do ,sorry i misread that ! only thing i can say is maybe there is a place in the bios to change it to 4 meg ,its not likely you will be able to change it on the motherboard

hi on the back of the laptop is a nd cover ,covering the ram chip remove it ,usually one or two screws ,inside you will see the memory chip ,get the info off the sticker and get exact replacement ram ,the laptop will only go to 256 meg ,so depending on what is in it now [it could be 2, 64meg for a total of 128meg ,]if that is the case you will need to ger 2, 128 meg chips to get it to 256meg.

Hey, Currently my computer has one 40GB hard drive in it, and my friend has an old computer that he never uses with an 80GB hard drive. Is it possible just to take that hard drive and plug it into one of the connectors in my computer?

sure it possible ,but if you plan on using it as the main hdd,and run the windows that might be install on it that won't happen ,it will need a fresh install of winxp or what ever ,but if you plan on just using it for storage should be no problem just some jumper setting on the drive to use it as a slave drive

can you hit the del key it [may be another key ] to enter the bios and set the defaults and save changes and reboot see what happens .
I have seen this with computers that have been unplugged from power source and have a dead bios battery ,
