slow ,its only a Celeron CPU ,with 512 meg ram ,when is it slow ,what are you doing at the time ,what internet browser do you use ,include version ,you should try to fix the problem of the c:\ drive being almost full ,if it were mine i would remove the partition on C:\ and make it one and reformat and reinstall winxp

first thing i would try is set bios /setup to defaults and unplugging and reconnecting the sata cables ,

remove the hardrive from laptop ,take it to a computer repair shop and see if they can retrieve you data

for security ans support alone you should update to sp3 , don't need to keep wmp 11 after the update ,you can remove it and reinstall wmp 9 or 10 .you should be able to go to add and remove programs ,and in the left pane go to add windows components and uninstall it from there i think ,if it not in add and remove programs .im using win7 for over a year now and cant remember all the winxp features for sure !

So I guess now my only option is to upgrade to SP3 and run the utility that caperjack suggested to see if it will repair itself!! I can't do the registry edit as suggested by one poster because I can't uninstall the drives in device manager because they are not showing up there. The last option of course would be a clean install of XP.

sp3 is not the poison it was when it first came out ,it should cause no problems on you computer now !

I meant to add to the above post that sometimes I've wondered if the problem was with Power DVD that I use to watch DVD's. Given that both drives will play CD's but not DVD's..??

try playing the dvd with windows media player ,

i agree ,a raid is 2 or more harddrives and doesn't involve dvds' should beable to disable it in bios setup

i have a vista based system,
i had recently downloaded a corel draw software with a keygen.
and made the mistake of opening the keygen with internet explorer, now all my .exe files are opening with internet explorer accomnpnied with a download window,

regedit is not opening and i cannot open any file on the computer,

one way i solve this for me when it happens is a go to start and log of user ,and when it logs off i log back in and try closing the usb then

ok, so its any disk not just the recovery disk as stated in first post ,what happens if you go to mycomputer and click on the cdrom icron with the disk installed .

are you meaning it won't boot to the recovery ,dose the computer still work ,will it still boot to winxp , the toshiba disk will wipe harddrive and put it back to day one when you first bought it ,loss of all data .
if you need to boot to the recovery disk ,you may need to go into the bios setup to change the boot order to cdrom

not quite what the poster needs to do,that link is about doing a doing upgrade of media center over winxp ,with out removing xp pro or home ,they have windows media center key but no cd ,so they have no way of installing winxp ,and then installing media cent over it,you need to have both wintows media center cd and winxp or home cd to do what that links is all about .

hi,sounds really old ,but im thinking maybe on e-bay ,the power supply sounds like AT, the socket type ,is not enough to go by as they all were refered to as socket type ,then a number like socket "A", socket 5,socket 7,super7 and so on .
you would need to take the cpu out to see the type written on the socket .my humble opinion is i know you mean well but it seems like a wast of time and money to try and fix the broken ones ,hope you didn't pay much for them,

have you tried going to device manager and uninstalling the drives and reboot to reinstall them ,just a thought

it depends on how many updates and what the update was for and of course the size of the update ,you said you waited 15 min,has to be until it finished ,you are not suppose to interrupt ,so you just need to let it finish

i waited for at least 15 minutes but it is still configuring

15 min is not a long time ,you need to wait till it finishes ,really ,unless it appears after many hrs that it not going to finish

usually you can tell by how hot its getting on the bottom of the laptop ,and is it getting hot and shutting down on you after using it for awhile .

download speccy this program when run will show temps of some of the harware of the laptop .run laptop for awhile to let it heat up a bit ,then run the program let it analyze the laptop ,then go to file and click on publish snapshot ,and click copy to clipboard and post the link here so we can see
