ok, i usually set mine to download the update but let me decide when to install ,then i look through them and and install only the critical ones

wiggle ,wiggle made it but now its broke ,so the original reason the wiggle worked needs fixing ,re-solder wires perhaps
I know, i've sent it to repair center
The small battery for time (on the motherboard) is still the same.
the small battery is for far more important things than just keep time ,its to put power to the cmos chip that holds the bios info for you computer ,a dead one can cause the computer not to boot ,did for me once anyway, but the fact that your shutdown suddenly it more like a power supply or motherboard issue
how about the Windows XP Windows Update...? Should you update it monthly?
set it to auto update ,chose a time you know the computer will be turned on.
how to configure windows updates

explain you situation a little better or why not just create a new acct make it a admin acc and then delete the x employees acct.
to create a acct or delete an acct go to start ,control panel, users
did you check the microsoft link in my last post .
als do you have a network setup ,or are you just trying to see how many people might be connected to your internet network
was going to say im sure its a good program ,but then i ran it ,and first they want money from you to download drivers you can get from the maker of the devices on you motherboard ,for FREE
so i ran it and it said i have 16 bad drivers ,2 or three mentioned were for my harddrive controller ,my router ,my wireless device ,all working just fine ,all drivers were for devices that work just fine on my computer ,thinking they just see drivers that they think are outdated ,
my opinion to the original poster is you only need updated drive if you are having problem with a specific device ,and the updated drive will fix it .
just figured out why mine has so many bad/out dated drivers ,im using a Dell ,not compatible with win7 and it doesn't have drivers for win7 on the Dell site xp/vista only ,
but it works just fine
right click on a flash game then click settings go to the first thing there (a blue screen) and enable hardware acceleration
hi,this is a very inactive thread over 3 yrs old
hig follow some or all suggestion in this Microsoft link ,good luck .
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/318378
I could go on and on .but i won't ,well maybe just a little ,lol, never had an issues bad enough or within warranted time frame to call any of the makers of my laptops,so customer service was never an issue
If you are looking to know the best computer brand don't worry.Dell provide the best computer in different configuration, you can choose it according to your need. This is the best for you because 2-years ago i purchase new laptop of Dell i am very happy them no problem comes on my computer system till now.
that's the way i speak of our almost 3 yr old Toshiba still running of the original install of Vista, but people who get lemons of either Dell or Toshiba or any brand computer cuss them to hell
if you are looking to replace a desktop maybe ,and use the laptop only at home as you have said ,i would go with the 17.3" as you will really come to enjoy the extra screen size, my opinion, you will not notice the small difference in the hardware ,enjoy
hitting f8 on startup and got to safe mode with networking and see if it happens there
Download 'Driver Agent'. It automatically checks your system and recommends if there are any updates available for any of the hardware. Installing the drivers or not, is upto you.

Step 4: Update your BIOS.
Most newer PCs have a fairly easy BIOS update procedure: Just download the .exe file from your PC manufacturer's Website, quit all open programs, run the .exe, and let it handle the patch; then reboot. If your PC suddenly shuts down in the middle of the BIOS update, you won't be able to boot up, so make sure you're not running off a laptop battery. Ideally, you're plugged into an uninterruptible power supply (UPS), especially if you're in an area prone to blackouts.
that was copied from this site ,
[ http://www.pcworld.com/article/187437/how_to_update_your_bios.html } its just a general assumption, also i assume you would have to use a floppy or usb if the computer wasn't booting into windows and needed a bios update .
my answer to you question ,or a new computer witch ever is cheapest
3. load certain drivers at install
to me this is the only one that make any sense .
it would be to load drivers for SATA drive ,winxp doesn't have them built in ,but i think most new bios have a setting to emulate ide or someting like that ,i think you'd have to google that one ,most,if the boards bios doesnt you could download the proper drive for the new board and use a program called Nlite to slipstream the divers into a new copy of your winxp cd , if not all, most motherboard have the ability to update bios from with in windows i do believe ,i haven't used a floppy in a few years ,and i have from time to time repaired or build computer, and load winxp using nlite
nlite .

here is a feature of win vista and win7 i used for a laptop i first used win7 on .it only had 1.5 gig of ram so i used a 4gig thumbdrive and redyboost ,its built into win7 .when i plugged in the usb thumbdrive first time it asked if i wanted to use it to speed up computer and you just chose yes ,it made a noticeable difference in the laptop
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-CA/windows7/products/features/readyboost
its may wel ltake the 4 gig of ram ,but if you are using a 32bit windows install it will not recognize the extra 1 gig until you start using the 64bit windows install ,but if you already have 64 bit then it will work ,as long as the board can handle the 4gig and.
right click on [my]computer go properties and it will show there what your windows install is 32-64.
this is from asus site about the ram .its likely shop told you 3gig max because the windows installed is only 32bit
2 x DIMM, max. 4GB, DDR2 667/533 MHz, non-ECC, un-buffered memory
Dual channel memory architecture
* Refer to www.asus.com or user manual for Memory QVL (Qualify Vendor List)
**When installing total memory of 4GB capacity or more, WindowsR 32-bit operation system may only recognize less than 3GB. Hence, a total installed memory of less than 3GB is recommended.
Mine's been on 1% for like an hour. Starting to get impatient. I thought the whole thing would take about an hour, but apparently I'll have to let it format for over four days straight? Damn....
it maybe that the harddrive is bad ,it should not take more than a few minutes to maybe and hr. to format the drive
Solved it with this: http://www.softpedia.com/progDownload/3r1c-Volume-Control-Download-34050.html
good news ,thanks for posting back
go to start /control panel /users ,and create a new non admin acct ,with limitations, and while in there put a password onto your acct
The computer will boot to normal screen with bootable windows disk.
boot to the winxp cd and choose "R" to get to the recover console and run
"chkdsk /r" with out the "" ,and a space between the k and /
Actually it depend on your base. I think if you spend $1,500 for a desktop that will provide your need.:)
its got nothing to do with total price ,its all about whats in the box ,what graphics card what harddrive what ram,not whether it cost 1500 dollars
hi,i dont use any of those features but can supply a Microsoft link that will be helpful .but security setting should be used with caution ,it all about remembering what you did !

also google search results .

and someone else here may offer hands on directions for you
hi, i don't know a whole lot about networking ,only the basics at best ,but if you have a network setup shouldn't you already know who's on it .
maybe also post you question in the daniweb networking section ,maybe someone there that doesn't check the windows forum ,might have and answer for you
http://www.daniweb.com/hardware-and-software/networking/13
just found this with google search of the error #.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/139910
Opinion comming up .! you never should have bought it .
something spilled on it likely got into the motherboard and fried it also.
hi, if you compare the cost of your upgrade[you say 250.00] to a new one,Dell says starting at 419.00 [with the 4gig ram ],i say new one
http://www.dell.com/us/business/p/vostro-1540/fs
Sorry, I was not sure what you were asking? Is that on the right track or am I far off?
check original poster name ,not the same as the last poster ,and this thread is old but not really old ,but original poster has not posted since November of last year
Q: does Toshiba program this to make us want to buy a new one? please help.
yup,you figured it out ,not many do they just keep trying tho fix the old one , if you need help finding a great price on the new one just ask .
lol
I can not switch on my computer
hi, hard to say why with such little info from you to go on, but i will say 2 thing broken off/on button ,or bad power source
The Memtest86 apparently was into the Asus sys. I did not install it or even know it was there until the computer acted up.
ok, didn't ever see that in any computer before
Need to know the hardware on your system to choose the right driver?
http://global-download.gateway.com/FilesDownload/HWID/HWVendorDetection.exe
there is no NV7310u listedoo the usa site, any chance it was purchased in another country , post both logs please
i used memtest86 for years ,but did not know you could install it on a computer ,only ever see it for making a boot cd ,how did you get it installed to run at bootup .
did you check you power supply ,it could be acting up .when you have the case open did you look around for swollen/leaky capacitors on the motherboard they look like this .

I imagine CTRL+F11 will allow me to burn the recovery partition manually. I'll try this after the GMER Rootkit scanner does its thing. Thanks!
nope it will allow you reinstall your windows and make things right with the computer ,you will be going back to factory settings in doing this
,and then you may be able to make the recovers ,
Tried creating back-up discs (yes, I know I should've done this a long time ago), but it locks up just as it's about to finalize the second of two discs at 98%.
were you going to burn dvd recovers to reload windows ,if so try this [Ctrl+F11]on bootup to access the recovery partition
I just found an old IBM thinkpad I used to use. I want to give it to my grandson to use, but I can't remember the password. Is there a way to reset it or recover it?
check the post above by jbennet
what is the exact model number of the laptop .should be on back on a sticker .
did you scan computer with any malware/trojan remover tools ,a good one is found at www.malwarebytes.com ,download the trial version ,do a full scan, when done click show results /fix selected ,it will create a log ,you can copy & paste the log back here if you wish we can have a look see .
Well. Never mind. . .
But what if i try to tinker the flash ROM inside?
Is that a bad idea since it may tamper my warranty?
not sure what you plan on tinkering with ,if you mean formatting it ,it shouldn't hurt any warranty ,not sure what else you could do to it ,what exactly did you have in mind when you say tinker with it.
I have about 6 usb thumbdrive ,all work just fine ,not all of them show there original name ,as i formatted and even changed the file system on them ,turned some into boot able devices and such
when in f8 where you go to safe mode ,do you have a option to run a repair.antagonistic,if so try that
I've tried both updating and removing and reinstalling drivers, and still get the same errors
how did you update the drivers ,did you go to Gateway web site and search your model and download the drivers from there
problem with the ubuntu cd is it is bootable ,but also installable ,seem like you made the mistake of installing it ,and it wiped out your windows and all the file on it ,and changed the file system to linux ,and now it not recognizable ,in windows ,i think you need to hook back in the computer and look for linux software to recover files ,good luck
memtest86 ,download the iso file and burn it to disk ,it will create a bootable disk and you just put it into the cddrive and reboot ,let it run the full scan ,may take a few hrs .
http://www.memtest86.com/
if need a iso burning software get free isoburn .

Hi caperjack,
Thank you for the quick response...okay i will just do this few gig at a time,by the way can i ask something? if i have 3.0 external hdd can this be compatible with the 2.0 on the p.c?Thank you again.
yes a 3.0 will plug into the same port as the 2.0 but will only be as fast as the 2.0
when it comes to 3.0 and 2.0 ,internal connection of the 3.0 plug, will not plug into where the 2.0 plugs on the motherboard ,the motherboard must be 3.0 compatible and have connection for it ..
must be something wrong somewhere ,have scanned for virus/trojans lately .i would suggest www.malwarebytes.org ,free version ,run the full scan, after scan ends view results and fix suggested .it will create a log ,copy and past the log results back here if you wish
none i know of except new hardware ,file transfer speed is controlled by the speed of the computers CPU and harddrive and and the speed of the connection between the computer and the external device ,the external device[usually usb 2.0] being the one that slows it all down . excample =High-Speed USB 2.0, which operates at 480 Mbps. and the new usb3=SuperSpeed USB 3.0 operates at 5 Gbps, only found on newer motherboard .
I assume you have multiple file adding up to 20 gig ,so might i suggest you separate them and only move a few gigs [2-3 gig ]at a time copy
no expert ,but what are you planning on using the computer for after its built .
you did notice the board uses a Intel Xeon CPU right ,which if im right would make it a good video editing and Cad type workstation ,not a gaming cpu .unless it has become one ?
i have a older xeon based computer and its a Dell Workstation ,not a gamer
from Wikipedia =The Xeon is a brand of multiprocessing- or multi-socket-capable x86 microprocessors from Intel Corporation targeted at the non-consumer server, workstation and embedded system markets.
