This may sound like a dumb question but I was wondering if my mouse and keyboard functions (and other built in functions like wireless) will be functional after I upgrade the hard drive without any data transfer from the old hard drive and then installing a new OS. Or would I HAVE to use the recovery disks that came with the laptop in order for those internal functions to work?

What OS id it running now ,if its xp and you want to change to win7 you will need to check if there are drivers for win7,if you don't want to use the recover disk its ok ,you then go to the laptops makers web site search for drivers for your model .if you want/need you can post your exact model [usually on a sticker on the bottom of laptop ]here i can find correct downloads for you .what OS are you planning on install ,

if you are using winxp and want to go to win7 then check if it will have issues with win7 ,

Well, in my opinion Win Xp is much better than Win 7, because it faster and more reliable than Win 7.

i know you a signature spammer ,but why cant you at least say something use full ,xp is not and i repeat NOT faster than win7.....period

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

a quick answer is 64 bit is better tan 32bit ,the amount of ram it can use is the main reason in my opinion ,but there are plenty more reason just google "why 64bit is better " and find out more

In most situations (internet servers, cloud computing, scientific computing, super-computing) Linux has a commanding market share lead over Microsoft. The ONLY area where MS is dominant is on the desktop.

that's what i said ,desktops = general users ,when cows fly = never

My computer is doing the same thing.....I had a breaker in the house to trip...The computer made a popping noise when I flipped the breaker back on...Now the power button on the front of the tower part is flashing orange and wont do anything.... Please help

hi, the popping noise isn't good for sure ,it may have toasted the motherboard, but that only a guess from a distance ,start by testing the power supply ,unplug power cord ,open tower and remove all addin cards and try turning it on,a fried network adapter or other card could stop it from booting .
testing a power supply ,i suggest using a piece of covered wire and not a paper clip or at least put some electrical tape on the paper clip

By the way caperjack,my bad hard drive is samsung not seagate is seatool still works on my samsung hdd?

yes

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

after the reinstall did you install latest device drivers and run windows updates .was the reinstall from dvd or from a recovery partition .
maybe some info on what type of computer you are using will help ,brand name and model ,what version of windows ,desktop or laptop ,ect ect

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

you could downlkoad seatools for windows instead of the DOS one ,and install it on your desktop and run it and it will locate the 2 harddrive in the computer , tell it to scan the slaved laptop drive

@caperjack: I agree about the improt, but depending what we are talking about here the answer could either be a macro, or an ODBC pointing to a txt file and a datasource for that ODBC or a macro with OLEDB or whatever.

ok,sounds good ,so poster need to look at creating macro i assume ,[http://www.homeandlearn.co.uk/mw/s10p2.html]maybe something more in-depth to created one to do what poster want to do , thats a part of Word i know nothing about .maybe i learn it in that link to.

if i knew a way i would have told you in the first post ,to the best of my knowledge there is no quick way without affecting all other .htm files on the computer

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

if you change these pages .htm files into .txt files all you will get is the code used to create the page

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

the way the question is asked ,it means more that just opening the file in Word .I asks "How can I import data of a text file into a ms word file" to me this means ,im working on a word file and i want to add some text form another source to the word file ,i do use MS Word ,and have imported text from another source into a document, but i'am no expert ,and i don't think there is any quick way of doing this , how unorganized would the file actually end up being .
so having said that you likely mean you want to change the .txt files into .docx files .not going to be quick and easy either ,at best you would have to open each one in Word and ten save as word file.me thinks

hi, its my experience that once a hard drive does what your is doing its not fixable ,you should run seatools to test the drive ,download and burn to cdrom the seatools for DOS in this like ,boot the computer to the CD and run the full test to see if the drive is bad .if its bad seatools will tell you for sure .check on how to use it on this site also

That's the reason why I am discourage of HP Laptops, because based from the experience of my classmate, she also had the same problem. That's she really regrets buying it. It also made her eye problem worst.

most if not all laptop makers who sell cheap laptop to the general public have inferior models

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

sorry , squat, just means they "don't know nothing "

Seagate is a good drive ,and it will not hurt to use a 5400rpm drive its just a bit slower ,its use in laptops because of heat ,it will run cooler than the 7200rpm drive..

tell the computer shop to look for this model Seagate . ST9320423AS

Seagate ST9320423AS Momentus 7200.4 Mobile Hard Drive - 320GB, 2.5", 7200 RPM, 16MB, SATA

these things are mass produced and bound to fail ,you just got a bad one in my opinion ,i have 5 or 6 of them and every now and then one of them fuggs up and i have to format it ,i usually just use disk manager within windows ,the ones that wouldn't format for i just throw them away

I have the same problem, but not with 1 machine. I have had 4 machines with the same problem. Two are still on the bench and the other two are still in customers homes. I have tried everything I could think of. All of the computers are different with different boards, CPU, RAM etc.
I have changed RAM, Hard Drives, Power supplys. I show no errors anywhere and they wiill all reboot in a random pattern.
The only thing left is MB and CPU.
I totally rebuilt 1 with new MB, RAM, CPU, HDD and PS and it has been working fine ever since. Almost 1 year now
If I had to make an educated guess, I would say change the MB and failing that change the CPU as well
That should solve the problem. Basicall you are just building a new machine.

interesting post ,but why post to a thread that's almost 5 yrs old .Really

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

wish a lot of old threads would get marked solved as fast as this one did ,to bad someone couldn't close it before it get a chance to last 10 yrs or so .
the word stupid was used in the first post ,and it has always been said in help forums that no question is stupid ,but i have to say that doesn't apply here . lol, really though what did you think the fan was on the cpu for ,if you could run the cpu without it , to boil tea ~

some pendrives have/had a little switch on them to lock them, is the case with yours maybe, likely not ,but worth a look ,also did you try it into another computer to be sure its the pendrive and not something weird in you computer causing it

Running multiple AVs on your computer will significantly decrease performance (and some won't even allow it) but you can use online tools to scan with multiple antivirus engines:
1. You can do a quick scan of your running processes and memory with 5 antivirus engines using the MD4SA demo (http://www.opswat.com/products/metadefender-for-secure-access)
2. You can upload files to scan with many antivirus engines using Metascan Online (http://www.metascan-online.com)

any multi scan tool is only as good as the virus scanning tools it uses ,and from what i just goggled and read it used 5 different tools and only one of them [the 5 used ] is a know proven tool

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

The problem's fixed now. Not really sure how, but suddenly, the loading was really fast.

its a new year, new life! ,maybe it was just running out of energy coming on the end of the year .lol
good luck

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

It can even start,

hi, i will assume you meant It can't even start ,the most likely cause is the power supply is dead ,next if its not the power supply then its a dead motherboard maybe ,to test motherboard after you rule out the power supply ,remove all add in cards and ram from board ,have only power going to board and try turning it on .

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

all things are possible when it comes to computers ,but any upgrade i have every done all programs on the computer always worked ,after ,make sure you buy the win7 upgrade and not the full version ,good luck

I'm using Toshiba satallite laptop. It is working fine. But when I turn on it a black screen with blinking cursor appears instead of chipset logo. And then boots normally.
In this situation, how can I change the first boot device for a new OS installation?

hi,you need to enter the bios/setup, when first turned on it should tell you what key to hit to enter bios/setup uually f2 or maybe f12,or even DEL , in there look for bootup ,and change first boot option there .
