Amber, As one girl to another, I just want to add my thoughts on this. If he has an addiction to porn you WILL both be fighting it your entire lives (or as long as you're with him). It might be fine while you two are relatively happy and together, …

Do the fans run when you turn it on? Do you get any beeps when you turn it on? Does anything happen at all? Any other clues to what could be causing the problem?

Hi, I have a user whose machine I am trying to clean up. I've been locked out of task manager, so I can't kill any processes. When you try to access the file system, it will open a browser window that directs you to real-av.org, however none of the real-av …

I just had a thought that might bear looking into. The power supply on Dell Dimension 8200 is only 250 watts. I really don't think that's enough power to run that level of video card and two mice + other peripherals? Also, verifying this in the system documentation http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/dim8200/specs.htm#1101572 I …

Well, before you throw all hope out the window, you might try taking your hard disk to a local computer store and pay them to do a data rescue on it. Since you haven't installed anything on it yet, it's very likely that you'll be able to recover all your …

If you want to be able to do a fresh install of windows with your programs already installed, you'll need to create an image file by using some sort of ghost program to copy your hard drive. That's how those restore disks work.

I had seen the problem you're referring to on another message board and they have a few different fixes for it. http://help.lockergnome.com/index.php?showtopic=24659 Hope it helps.

Since you seem to be out of other ideas.... here's a longshot... Is this by chance a work laptop? I know that when I had a laptop issued to me from work, I experienced something similar when the company started monitoring my internet usage. One day I could connect via …

Since it has Centrino, I'm assuming it's a laptop? Is there any chance you're dragging your hand across the touchpad or mouse keys and confusing it?

Hi there, In order to change it back to the XP, you'll need to right click on your desktop and choose properties. Under the "Themes" tab choose Windows XP and Apply. If you are using any particular wall papers you can reapply those afterward.

Have you checked to make sure all your drivers are installed? I've had a video card driver missing and had similar experiences with slowness. On the desktop icons, if you right click on the desktop, click properties, click on the "desktop" tab and then choose "Customize Desktop" it will allow you …

The first thing to check is to make sure you have all the correct drivers installed especially the motherboard drivers and the video drivers. Especially since you just re-did your computer. If it turns out that isn't the problem, next you should probably start checking for viruses/malware even though you …

Timic, Is it possible that Service Pack 2 was installed through automatic updates and this could be causing your problems? I've heard of some weird errors when SP2 was installed on existing systems (i.e. not a fresh install or close to it). -Erin

I've had quite a few problems with onboard sound cards. Quite a few times I had one particular computer that the sound would quit working on and I'd reinstall the drivers and then it'd work again. After doing that for a few weeks a couple of times a week, it …

I've had no problems with it and have it on quite a few (20+?) machines now. The only weird thing I've seen so far, is that on my machine when I sign into windows messenger in a particular way, it resets the font size on my tooltip boxes... very weird, …

You might try replacing the phone line that runs between the computer and the wall. Other than that, it looks like you might be ready for a new modem...

Have you tried uninstalling it from Add / Remove programs? Also, I think 04 - HKCU\..\Run: [MessengerPlus3] "D:\Program Files\Messenger Plus! 3\MsgPlus.exe" /WinStart might be part of the problem. I know when I installed that program it installed some serious spyware. If it's running it at every startup, it could be …

On the "via" message, you probably need to check your startup items. You should check in the startup folder on your start menu and also in msconfig (start>run>"msconfig"). Check the startup tab, and uncheck anything that looks suspicious. If you don't know what it is, do a google search on …

Have you tried hitting the function key that changes the screen mode? Usually this is a button at the top of the keyboard area, or perhaps, the function key +F4 (seems like that worked on one). Anyhow, you should have a key there that toggles the screen on and off …

Rather than running it from the command prompt, you might try right clicking on the file choosing the compatability tab and running it in compatability with win 95. Then just double click the file to run it. It's worth a shot anyway, eh?

Rather than burning an audio cd, have you tried burning a data cd and then trying it on a cd player? If you're having that much trouble converting it on your computer, it may not work, but it'd be worth a shot.

If you've put the hard drive into your computer, does it not let you copy your files so you can backup the files you need and then reinstall everything from scratch?

First thing I would check is the video card. Try uninstalling rebooting and letting the machine detect and install it.

I had a computer that had similar slowness issues and it wound up being a combination of the video driver and the mouseware driver from logitech. Since you say it doesn't do this in safe mode, I'd definitely disable all the start up items, i.e. Direct CD & Logitech Mouseware …

Go to the control panel and open up Administrative tools. Double click on "Services" and find "Messenger" Double click to view the properties. Go ahead and stop the service and choose "disabled" under the "startup type" drop down box. Click Apply. This should stop those annoying messages.

I don't use NT, so I'm not sure if it applies, but you might try opening internet explorer, and looking at Tools-->Internet Options. Click on the security tab and try changing your security levels. There should be some active X options available there.

I found this answer in another forum when I was having the same problem: Goto: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon The 'Userinit' string should read: C:\WINDOWS\system32\userinit.exe, (including the comma at the end) If "C:\WINDOWS\system32\userinit.exe," appears twice in a row, delete the repetition.

Have you tried just typing C:\boot.ini into the address bar on explorer? If it's there, it should just pop up. I know when I tried looking for it on my computer I had trouble seeing it as well.
