NO........he will have to get a Eth Card so that the computer can connect through the router... or disconnect the router and reconnect the modem directly to the computer........I know this because i work Time Warner Level 3 Help deks.. here is what you have a moden that give out ONE IP address, to any devices that attached to it...in your case the router then the router can give out as much as four IP (for Time warner) NOW if the PC does not have a eth connection it will not be able to connect to the router. therfore you need to get a eth card or return to the prious connection you had with the computer and the modam.

you might be installing the wrong drivers. did you get a driver cd with the IBM....before you down load from the wed site you must make sure it;s the correct driver for example is it blue tooth wireless or plain network wireless.

bobbyraw 16 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

Just to iterate when you did the clean install, was the HDD formated or you left the file system in place....I would just try a new clean install and ensure the HDD is formated.

now that you install the driver for the printer you can try installing the other softwares, browse the cd and double click on the setup file it will install the other software when you do use the customized option and put a check mark beside all items in the list of items to be installed.

This will install all you need to work with the printer.

bobbyraw 16 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

you need to change the boot order in the bios.....select floppy, then CD then Hard disk....or you should have an option on the bios screen to plress a key for the boot menu...press that key and choose the drive you want to boot from.....

PXE is when the PC cannot find any other boot device it try booting from a network connection....

bobbyraw 16 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

crap. :-( Is there any way to make the partition bigger without messing up the whole disk? I don't know where I kept reading about 10gb. I saw people say 5gb - that *never* would've worked... although I would've known that as I was installing XP. :(

Yes you can use Norton Partition magic to resize the drive

not sure what you mean by NB program but it is possible to put the program files folder on D:\ and do a regedit to change its destination ,but the system files \dll files that are instilled by a programed will still be install in system32 folder on c:\

NB should be followed by : meaning note well and doing a regedit to change the program location will be time consuming and you would have to move the entire directory the program is installed in to match the registry.

all my programs are being installed to D:\ right now. There are a lot of remnants of media player, netmeeting and outlook express in folders on C though.

Do you think I should repartition stuff before I reinstall the rest of my stuff?

once you remove the program through add/remove you can delete the directories... and yeah repartition you HDD before you start to add new program.

USE the program i suggested above, really quite simple....it's a matter of just dragging the sized bar...

bobbyraw 16 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

Windows Defender and Norton Internet Security whats the difference really.....as i stated in my earlier post no Single Anti virus program will give you total protection, you have to use some other variant of a virus cleener to offset some of the weakness that your main program will miss....

Take for example i once had Norton Corporate edition and AVG free non detected a Trojan i had on my pc until i installed Mcafee Enterprise.

XP SP2 - I partitioned my new hd (seagate barracuda 220) last week, set it up as per some common setups mentioned here. I have my XP OS on C:, all my programs on D: - they automatically install there. I have my data on E:. Workspace on F:.

From what I read, 10Gb was plenty for the OS.... but I'm getting worried, I only have 1.5GB left. The only program I actually intentionally installed was ERUNT for registry backups.

I see Messenger, MovieMaker, Netmeeting in there... which I don't need, but don't know how to delete. It doesn't seem they are even installed. I don't need Outlook Express either. Can Windows Media player be installed elsewhere? None of these things seem to be taking up that much space. the Windows folder is the culprit - but there's still only 3.3 gb in there. Tons of the $NTUninstalls. None of the folders seem to have much in them, but the partition has 8.25 gb used. Any ideas? Did I mess this up? I read in multiple places that 10GB was more than enough for the OS. I don't know how to repartition :(

Everything else is working well, my docs is on D, programs are installing correctly. I'm just concerned about that OS partition filling up so fast. Thanks for any advice.

Gina

step 1
Go to control panl>add Remove> click on Add/remove windows components, when the window comes up scroll through the list remove outlook express, net meeting, …

Hey Everyone
There seens to be a problem with my pc and i cant find any reason for it, it was working fine just the day before and now it has slowed to a point where i cant even watch vids WMP take a long time to load up and then the vids cant run smoothly at all.
I have ran registry checks, spyware and antivirus checks, but i have not defrag the machine yet something which i am about to do. However i am just wondering where anyone knows why or where the problem is coming from.
If anyone can please tell me what you need to know to help

Specs
AMD Athlon 64 x2 4800+
2GB ram
Geforce 7600GT
320 GB hard drive
all drive up to date

thanks

Did you defrag and what program did you use....you probable need to defrag the registry too. a good program is registry first aid... you should also click on Ctrl+Alt+Del, take a look at the processes running,(sort by mem usage.) look at what program is using up all the mem.....

what were you doing when this happened. is the vista or XP

bobbyraw 16 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

any file that you down load WILL automatically bring up the extension that is associated with the file,,,Example if you down load a ***.zip file the file of type box will have the .zip extension. same applies for any file you download.

Please a bit more specific as to what you want to do.......

if windows explorer is corrupted you will not be able to do much in windows, thats is a core file for windows to work properly,,try doing a repair installation this delete all system files and reinstall them, you will not loose you installed application.

bobbyraw 16 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

nero will mount he image on the disk, it will be bootable too......so you have nothing else to do but pop in a cd or is it a dvd sized, so long since i have downloaded it myself.

bobbyraw 16 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

I had a similar problem recently, i ended up with a new Mother board and HDD. to verify that this is no your mother board you have to test the hard drive in another pc.

PS if you have any other HDD disconnect them you will also note that if you unplug your mouse or key board you loose power on the PC... this will tell you that the mother board is at fault.

bobbyraw 16 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

then in that case i would not suggest using the icon change, you would have to do it for every single file,,,,but if you want to change all at the same time...use the program you want to be the default program for certain files. for example see attachments .......one image file is open by quick time and the other is windows picture and fax viewer...now is you want all to be open by windows picture and fax viewer you would right click on the file and choose open with,, choose the program and check the box always use this program to open file of this type...... then all image files icon would be change

bobbyraw 16 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

>>>but specific file types IE. FLV files.<< you want to change the icon for FLV file type???

bobbyraw 16 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

what did you use to defrag...... chkdsk is not as effective as diskeeper, diskeeper actually move all file to the correct sector on the hard drive, frequently used file to the front of the HDD for faster access, and all program files in the same or close sectors.....while chkdsk basically check the cluster and sectors for error and move a file if it's in damage or so to be damage sector........it would not be a CPU issue CPU signs and symptom are frozen screens and mouse pointer......CPU would not make the HDD hot the CPU would be hot..

i have been working with microsoft product from the DOS days to win 3.11 up to longhorn beta NOw, i did not see a number that match the amount of times i had to reinstall windows .....countless,,

Personally i do my system over every year most of the time just for the heck of it....i love to test, break and fix...thats why i Adore VM ware so much, now i dont have to use my real machine any more, but i love reinstalling XP

bobbyraw 16 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

HArd drive MUSt be dying, not accessing file efficiently,,,use diskeeper 2008 to defrag the drive.

bobbyraw 16 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

in widows explorer right click on a file
open with command for individual files. or go to control panel and choose default programs. here you will find setting for set your default programs and associate a file type with a program. or just click on all programs you will see default programs at the top or on the side menu

bobbyraw 16 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

i am cool with that. I have GREAT confidence in you Dani Queen...do your stuff it's look good already

bobbyraw 16 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

i see , but wouldnt it be better if i romove each wire individually from the base of the board ?
thanks

what do you mean by this

If the wire are twisted tight and insulated properly from each other then you should not have a problem. I say tight be cause you don't want these wires loose and cause a short,,,Best case solder and use shrink sleeves to protect wires Will be more secure and neater.

bobbyraw 16 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

you are right Surunson...or use a parallel cable,,,not use thats been used in a long time any where. but the wireless routers is the way to go

Be very mindful of the fact that vista and XP might take some tweaking to communicate effectively, but its doable.

bobbyraw 16 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

i was not referring to the configurations of the cisco box i was talking about Mail marshal....and i did state i don't know the person budget so they would have to do research...

bobbyraw 16 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

Looks good Dani....But instead of opening a psge why not have a drop down menu to select exactly what you want from each main topic,

PS after the page open some people would still be lost......Just a suggestion

bobbyraw 16 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

can you see the BIOS load, and then press F8 to get the boot menu? if possible, use the last known good configuration.

bobbyraw 16 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

Yeah you definetely need a firewall and not the sotware you need like a cisco firewall box, then a program to manage mails we use mail marshal, can configure to block any and all attachment and blank subject line, even if the mail are sent internal very configurable.

but i don't know your budget so you would have to do research and find a cheap efficient alternative

bobbyraw 16 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

you can run 2 different antivirus ( i am) it all depends on the programs, if you are installing one and it detect the other and advised you to remove it, it would not be a good idea to continue with the installation UNLESS you allow the new install to remove the old Av that was there already.

Personally i have run Mcafee Enterprise and Norton Corporate NEVER had a conflict. Presently i am running MCafee Enterprices with AVG Free and spyware terminator with Clamshield..no
problems
\

JUST a personal note ther is no one completed Antivirus program that will detect and proteect you for EVERY SINGLE instances of virus, trojan, malware and spyware. there were the online scanner comes in use from each site once per week

bobbyraw 16 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

your codec might be corrupted. i had a similar issue recently i had great videos and they started playing choppy and horrible sound, i removed all the codec i had installed, then down load new ones and installed them ....BAM and it's good give that a try. and you might want to not run a lot of things if you are going to watch videos.

bobbyraw 16 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

>>>Do I need to take out the hard drive, format it, and start over? Or is there a fix that I can do where it is at?<<<<
the hard drive is not initializing because windows cannot open the boot sector...if you have another computer you can put it in and format and run chkdsk on it to find out if the drive is going bad.

bobbyraw 16 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

you stated that this has been happening since the past 2.5 months. was the pc being used for regular stuff, what i am getting at is 3 month ago you obly turn the pc on for maybe checking a few email then power down but now you are running it longer doing other stuff,,,,,being hot is not a problem with the HDD that normal,,However, if it is hot to the point where it would burn to touch then it's a proble,,,,,,,,,,is that the type of heat you are talking about.

bobbyraw 16 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

according to this you would own the world if you had all the money in the world,,,but i know what mallard is getting at......you mean rich like warren buffet or the sheik in Saudi. then definitely pay for a lot of the kids who are suffer from hunger and malnutrition, then contribute to the cure for breast cancer, build houses for all my family & friend and get then any thing they want, i would give dani all the money she would ever need to keep this going,,,,

In Firefox the save link as... is the same as save target as... in IE. Firefox simple let you know you are saving a LINK while IE is not specific. the Save as extension is dependent on what language/code is used to create the web page or link.

By the way IE 7 will save any link to .HTM while Firefox will save in the code that the link /page was written

what capacity of the HDD is free.

bobbyraw 16 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

you might need to enable the USB port from in the bios,

PS do you have the latest SP running on the machine.

bobbyraw 16 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

Has this issue been recent, for example has it started to happened are addition of any hard ware or software. Like a video card, second hard drive,,,,what i am leaning to wards here is the PSU is not sufficient to handle those listed devices. as for software it would be something running a service/process in the back ground and burning up the HDD.....NOW if nothing was added try defraging the HDD. click start run type chkdsk /f you will get a message saying this will run when the pc reboot.....reboot let chkdsk run then when you are log on run the windows GUI version of chkdsk, ( right click on HDD choose properties then the tools tab and defrag.
