that is a security feature in explorer to throw off key loggers. so if you enter a 4 character password it will fill the password box. While this is use to thwart hacker sand key logger programs IE stores the correct password so when you visit the site and enter your user name the correct password will come up in the box (althought it will like like it's filled in the entire password box the correct password is behind those dots you see. NOW when you change the password IE will not know the new password UNLESS you log in on the web page and it detect that the password is different from thats in the cache. it will ask if you want to replace the password.

Modem/router is this a single device or 2 separate devices. Most ISP provide business with static IP so if it's 2 separate devices you would have to call the company and let them know you want to set the static IP on you router ( might be an issue with the company) but give it a shot.

On ping to google it gives the msg..Ping request cud nt find host www.google.com. Plz check the name n try again.

Ipconfig give the foll IP add wen i connected the sys to the router via USB cable..
Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
IP Address............................... : 192.168.1.5
Subnet Mask............................ : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway....................... 192.168.1.1

In IPConfig /All, there was this Windows COnfig which mite be of some use..
Host name............................... : abhishek
Primary DNS suffix................... :
Node Type............................... : Unknown

VINS Proxy Enabled................. : No

this ip and default gate you are show is for a router. if you are directly connected to the modem you should be getting an IP address designated by your ISP.

ok basically you will have to remove linux to install windows. if you can get a bootable XP cd you will be able to install windows after you delete the partition for linux if you have access to another compuer downlaod this program Killdisk you can use the cd Image or a floppy image which ever is easier to create

use it to deletes the linux installation then pop the windows XP cd in (ensure your computer is set to boot from the CD drive) this can be done from in the bios

easier yet if you have a windows 98SE cd you can run fdisk from the command prompt and remove the linux partition.

Hi all, I'm trying to install IIS on my Vista 32 Business and when I select anything in the Turn Windows Features on or off dialog it acts like it's doing stuff, then it just stops. I looked in windows logs and there are a bunch of "failed to complete the process of setting up the package XXX" errors. Any help is greatly appreciated. thanks, d

when you say windows box are you referring to the add/remove windows components in control panel?
if IIS will not install check what version of the .NET framework you are running.

Port forward allows inbound connection through your router. If you are using P2P program like limeware, kazaa, emule, bearshare you would want other to have access to your shared files. It can also be used if you need to have external access to you computer from outside.

AND NO port forwarding will not make your connection faster

Ok...I am in desperate need of help!
I have lived in my apt for the last year, we have always had comcast internet and a linksys router. My roommate with the linksys router moved away so I went out and bought a new
WRT54GS to hook up with comcast. (I don't know if you need this info, but the account was in her name, so I created a NEW account with them). I went through the linksys set up cd and it set up the network perfectly. However when I try to go wireless all I get is "page cannot be displayed" even though it's says "connected".
I have been on Linksys support chat, and I've called their support line, I've gotten no help. They take me through the same things I've done countless times. I've tried to call comcast and they say they have no information for me, that Linksys is the only one that can help...no one is helping me! The internet works perfectly when I hook my modem up directly to my computer, so I know there are no problems with the network. My computer also can communicate with the router fine, I've entered the IP address in IE and gone in and done some things that Linksys said might work (though they didn't).

I've tried powering down, resetting the router, cloning the mac address....I don't know what is wrong. And everyone wants to charge me $200 to come out and help me...

@ forumdude - He got the magic wand to wave any post off the site.

but why overclok when you can get top speed overclocking works best when you have a supercool system lots of fan with cool dry air flowing through the system
Overclocking generates almost twice the heat the unit is rated at.
Also if you are going to overclock ALWAYS use the manufacturer software then come with your board.
Another note overclocking works best for some things and will crash your system when running some programs. stuff like games will demand more from the processor and will cause it to heat faster thereby creating the potential for greater damage.

if you want to set a bios password a word of caution.

Don't forget the password
and the password can be reset by anyone how have some computer knowledge..

With that said you can set 2 type of bios passwords. one to prevent access to the bios and the other to prevent someone from starting the pc. the latter would have to be entered EVERY time you start the pc before windows start.

if windows is crashing the pc its one of 2 thing
1 you are infected with any or all of these: trojan, spyware, virus or malware.

2 windows explorer might be corrupted. this can be cause from registry strings in the wrong place.

you can either do a scan or do a repair of windows.

bobbyraw 16 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

remove Hdd, CD drive, any other devices you have attached. Connect ONLY the MONITOR. BUT make sure that the power panel on the mother board is configured correctly stuff like reset and hdd light can wait then power on the pc the first thing you want to see is the CPU fan turning. if that does not happen stop and check the power panel. if after verifying EVERY connection is correct and you still not getting any power, verify PSU fan is turning.

DO NOT BYPASS THE POWER SWITCH

I've noticed many others have had the same problems... I'm one of those guys that has to take things apart to see what makes them work, knowing only a little and always getting myself in over my head. Yesterday the computer decided to quit while sitting there quietly running. It does not power up. The little green light on the board is on. I swapped out power supplies, same thing, no response. I jumped the green power feed on the harness to the board with a ground and the fan on the power supply comes on. I disconnected the power switch to the MB and jumped the terminals on the board, nothing. I disconnected all the flotsam and jetsam from the MB and then tried to power up, no beeps, no fan on the cpu, nothing except that evil green light. I disconnected the power cord, pulled the bios battery out, jumped the bios terminals to clear it, then put everything back, no difference. This is an intel d865gvhz MB which I replaced just a year ago, to fix a seabreeze MB that did the same thing! Any thoughts for a backyard wanabe?

The green light you are seeing is a warning light (safety feature) to let you know the mother board has power. what's with all this shorting and jumper you are moving around on the board. are you doing this will power to the board. If so you might have just killed the board. For a person who …
