all good advice from fresh, but i beleive that the hard drive is dying. you need to run a disk utility that can check the drive sectors. each time the drive tries to copy to that sector it cannot. and when you do a format is does not reall repair the HDD. but it's best if you use a normal format option. DO NOT USE THE QUICK FORMAT.

are u using windows media player to configure the sound. if so, use the software that comes with the card and check the properties of the card.

bobbyraw 16 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

you have to make sure the game sound itself can transmit in surround sound or digital. no because you have surround sound you are going to get all speakers working for every sound that comes out of your PC.

if what you are talking is recalling a message you sent. thats impossible . that only work on a MS exchange server. but if it's a message you delete and want to get it back. the easiest way would be to get it from your sent items. if not call the comapny and hope u get a excellent tech that would be willing to help you. the next step is if you are geting your road runner mail throught a 3rd party mail program, say outlook express or microsoft outlook. all you have to do is delete the email account. and all offline/backup file associated with the account. then recreate the account, it will re download all your message sent, received, draft, deleted since you last did a send and receive.

you can use the recovery disk that came with your laptop do a clean install . it will remove all data and reinstall the operating system and any other software that came with the laptop when you got it. if you are woried about someone scannig your hard disk for old information even after you format it you can give it a military wipe, find this software dban on the internet and use it to wipe the HDD. then you can restore the computer with the restore disk.

bobbyraw 16 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

if your windows boot up and you can acces the drive from a usb or even from your internal attachment. use a program name easy recovery to recover your files. then you can format the hard disk. i use this program to recover a sid that was giving a I/o error when i try to acccess it from windows.

Norton ghost is pretty straight forward and easy to use. you can install all the programs and software then ghost the pc, as Jb said hard ware must be the same to a great extent and u must use a XP profesional with Volume license.

as for the server side, i suggest you work with some thing u are more familiar with, and not so expensive. you need to also let this person know it is not going to be a cheap task, in terms of software and hard ware that will be required to make this possible. as for the 2 computer going on the internet you can 1 either setup a proxy server on the server or just block port 80 for the computer that do not need to go online.

you are running a firewall and antivirus this would be a normal operation for the hdd. the virus program scan any files accessed by any processes or application. for example the pc goes to hibernation the virus program will scan and u will see a little flicker, even when you are not doing anything on the pc the hard drive will always be accessed.

bobbyraw 16 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

start the pc in safe mode, browse to the c drive you will see a directory will some strange character &$m delete it then open the registry and remove any reboot option that is listed in HKLM run section and HKLU run section. then do a new repair.

Ok here goes,

I have been working with this computer for like 2 weeks now, every time i go to install windows it will go through formatting then when it goes to the installing the files needed at the boot screen sometimes it will go thought the whole process and restart and it will just keep restarting and other times it will not read a file. I though it was the hard drive but that was not the case but now i am leaning more to the Optical drive. I just wanted to make sure that that might me the issue. What do you think? One more thing i have tried multiple windows installation cd, and dvd,s.

your answer is in the last line. your otical drive is having some issues. However here are a few things you could try to guarantee if it's you HDD or optical. uses fdisk (easier to use from a bootable win 98 cd) to partition you HDD, if you have a manufacturer cd that comes with the HDD use that to test and diagnose the HDD then set it up for use with an operating syste, Next clean the lens in the CD drive, if you dont ahve a can of air, remove the drive open the top cover and use a lint free cloth to clean the laser lens. if the drive is a sata chage the cable or the port which ever is easier. if it's IDE and it share the cable …

I want to completely erase all data using DBAN. I have a few questions about how I should go about reinstalling Windows afterwards:

1. Will Windows installer start as usuall - that is just by insterting the CD?
Yes, as long as the bios is set to boot from the cd first. and you have a bootable CD
2. Can BIOS be accessed after the process?
Yes the bios can be access after the wipe. the bios is not stored on the area to be wipe
(I'll be using a floppy disk to run DBAN. Since they say that the BIOS should be set to boot from the floppy drive first, before starting DBAN, I wondered whether it is possible to access BIOS again after the process to set the boot order to boot from the CD-rom first?) after the wipe change the bios back to boot from the cd first.

I have reinstalled Windows XP many times, but I've never done this before, so I am a bit nervous. Hope that you tech guys can help me.

to be honest you don't need to use Dban to wipe the disk, when you run windows setup it will detect the partitions on you pc. the best thing to do is delete the partition then create a new one then format all this can be done in widows setup.
Dban is mainly when you want to throw out a old pc or give it to some …

if you can slave the drive save your stuff and format it then reinstall XP. while the drive is slaved see if there is a second partition. if there is then you should be able to run the recovery option for your PC. i also notice the other poster told you to change your bios boot order and you have not responded if you did.

Hi, I work from home and with a wireless router had my g/fs and my own personal computer connected wirelessly and with my work computer connected into the router via Ethernet cable. I then used Win Xp VPN to connect to the company network.

Now they have sent me a 2nd router, which is not wireless. I now wire router #1 (the one they sent) to the modem and the work computer connects to router #1. Router #2 (wireless) also connects to router #1 and the personal computers connect to router #2. They set up a VPN ipsec tunnel to the company network integrated into router #1.

My question is: Can they pick up traffic from my personal computers which are wirelessly connected to router #2? I notice I can type in one of the company server local IP addresses (i.e., 192.XXX) on my personal computer and get the page that would be otherwise inaccessible.

yes they will be able to see what you do base on the config you have, all traffic are going throught the first router connected to the modem,

Open Control Panel, In the Control Panel double click System. then go the system Properties window, click on the Advanced tab. Locate the Startup and Recovery area and click on the Settings button.
In the Startup and Recovery window, locate and uncheck the check box next to Automatically restart.
clcik k twice. now when the system shuts down you will get a BSOD it will tell you the error. However, if you are getting the message in this picture then you have a trojan/virus/malware

if you have set up your router yourself you would have to log in to the router. to find the key. if your router is manage by your ISp you would have to call them to get it.

right click on mycomputer icon. chose manage then select disk management. right click on the drive you want to partition. select shrink. follow the steps to shrink the disk or you can set you own size but be careful. when the shrink is done format the new partiton that will be name unallocated. give it a name and whatnot. you now have a second drive.

set the bios to boot from the cd, ensure you have a bootable cd. you also want to ensure the Hard drive jumpers are set properly. and the data cable for the hard drive is securely connected.

bobbyraw 16 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

have you check the cd drive cable. maybe power is connected bit not the data cable, or it could be bad. Also are you certain that the CD is bootable., when you say it works on another pc do you mean that is boots up from the cd drive.

bobbyraw 16 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

why are you using RW disk to save directly from works. why not save to the hard drive, and when do backup on the RW therefore, save every day on the hard drive and every 3 days back up to the RW or use a flash drive as my fellow poster suggest. microsoft programs are only going to read the disk file as read only if you open the file from the cd. although the cd is RW.

you can use active directory to manage all the user and set password restriction such as reset or expires after a few months, weeks or days. this would mean you would get calls to the IT department for password reset. there is no way around that if you use AD. as for the public account i am assuming it is not password protected. so any student can log on. there is no way around this either because each user can set the desktop the way they want. the only option for this is to lock out certain features that when the user sign on they cannot change. here you can set restriction throught the domain controller ( AD) or on each individual computer. ( you can use a bat file or script to accomplish this).
