For your 'script error' try this: With IE open, click on Tools, click on Internet Options, and then click on the Advanced tab. You should see a heading that says Browsing, and under that, one that says Disable script debugging. If there is not a checkmark at this, put one there.

For your HJT, close all windows, scan with hjt, and have it fix the following entries:
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {029CA12C-89C1-46a7-A3C7-82F2F98635CB} - (no file)
O9 - Extra button: Help - {1EDF7E86-71C9-4A9C-BD7A-36BE465AEAFF} - http://www.btopenworld.com/helpbb (file missing) (HKCU)
O18 - Protocol: aim - {3050F406-98B5-11CF-BB82-00AA00BDCE0B} - %SystemRoot%\system32\mshtml.dll (file missing)
O18 - Protocol: shell - {3050F406-98B5-11CF-BB82-00AA00BDCE0B} - %SystemRoot%\system32\mshtml.dll (file missing)

This will just clean up your log a bit. Post another log as I'm sure there are more things that should be addressed by one of the pro's. When you post the new log, include whether or not you still get the script error.

Could be overheating, have you cleaned inside the case recently? Be careful when you do this, use a ground strap to avoid damage via static electricity.

You may also have a failing video card or RAM.

After you reinstalled your OS, did you reinstall the motherboard drivers and the drivers for all other devices?

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

Is all that good?It really means nuttin to me...lol

It's all 'good' as long as you aren't planning on doing some extreme gaming or anything.

The only way to know if this is a good price would be to check comparable systems in your area, or online where Canadian currency is used.

If you're planning on using a dial-up connection, you may need to install a modem as there is no mention of one in the specs you listed.

A CD burner would be a good upgrade to this if you can afford it and there is an available bay to put it in.

If you start saving a lot of large files (like videos), you may need either an additional hard drive or a bigger one eventually.

United States citizens who are worried about the Draft being reinstated should read this.

As you may or may not know, nearly two years ago (Jan. 2003), Democrat Charles Rangel introduced a bill to reinstate the Draft. It would have required all citizens between the ages of 18 and 26 to serve (male and female) for two years.

On 10/05/04, a roll-call vote was held. The bill was defeated by a count of 402 to 2, with Rangel himself voting against it.

So, if you were worried about the Draft being reinstated, don't be. There are no plans in the forseeable future to reinstate it.

The G.W. Bush Virus – Causes your computer to keep looking for viruses of mass destruction.

The John Kerry Virus – Stores data on both sides of the disk and causes little purple hearts to appear on screen.

The Ronald Reagan Virus – Saves your data, but forgets where it is stored.

The Clinton Virus – Gives you a permanent hard drive with NO memory.

The Al Gore Virus – Creates 100% CPU usage by causing your computer to keep counting and re-counting.

The Bob Dole (aka Viagra) Virus – Makes a new hard drive out of an old floppy.

The Lewinsky Virus – Sucks all the data out of your computer, and then e-mails everyone about what it did.

The Arnold Schwarzenegger Virus – Terminates some files, leaves, but will be back.

The Mike Tyson Virus – Quits after two bytes.

The Oprah Winfrey Virus – Your 200 GB hard drive shrinks to 100 GB, and then slowly expands to re-stabilize around 250 GB.

The Ellen Degenerate Virus – Disks can no longer be inserted.

The Prozac Virus – Totally screws up your RAM, but your CPU doesn't care.

The Michael Jackson Virus – Only attacks minor files.

The Lorena Bobbitt Virus – Turns your hard drive into a 3.5" floppy -- then discards it through Windows.

The MaryK virus – Continually accesses the same minor file, despite firewalls and other protective measures.

Hi Matt, you need to update your version of HJT, there is an Update feature within it you can use or go here:
http://www.softpedia.com/progDownload/x-Download-5034.html
Also, you're running it from your desktop, it should be put into it's own folder so backups can be stored safely (like c:\hjt\hijackthis.exe).

After you do that, close all windows, scan with hjt, and post a new log.

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

Hi Mary, what happened to your Hijackthis? Your first scan showed you were using the latest version, 1.98.2, but this latest one shows an older version, 1.97.7 (and it's now running from your desktop). Put the newer version of HJT into it's own permanent folder before having it fix anything so that the backups it creates cannot be deleted by accident (like c:\hjt\hijackthis.exe). After you do that, post a new log using 1.98.2.

Did this problem start when you upgraded to SP2? If so, there is an update that may help:

What BIOS do u have? You can try doing a search for 'beep codes' for your particular BIOS and see what that code means.

You might find it here:

You can get hijackthis from here:
http://www.softpedia.com/progDownload/x-Download-5034.html

XoftSpy is not any good, you can read about it here:
http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm
Put this in your favorites list so you can check on anything you have a question about.
(I got duped into buying that one myself before I knew any better)

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

There are two things you need to do before fixing anything with hijackthis. First, you need to update it; there is an Update feature within it, or you can get it from here:
http://www.softpedia.com/progDownload/x-Download-5034.html

Next, you need to put it in a permanent folder (not a temp one like you have it now), like c:\hjt\hijackthis.exe.

After you've done that, close all windows, scan with hjt, and have it fix the following entries:
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cus...rch/search.html
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cus...//www.yahoo.com
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cus...rch/search.html
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cus...//www.yahoo.com
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WebRebates0] "C:\Program Files\Web_Rebates\WebRebates0.exe"
O8 - Extra context menu item: Web Rebates - file://C:\Program Files\Web_Rebates\Sy1150\Tp1150\scri1150a.htm

Reboot into Safe Mode, go to C:\Program Files and delete the Web_Rebates folder.

Reboot normally, close all windows, scan with hjt and post the new log as there is more to do yet, which will better be handled by the pro's.

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

Just a couple of suggestions. After you've done as jorgensen suggested, put HJT in it's own folder -- right now you're running it from your desktop -- it should be in a folder like c:\hjt\hijackthis.exe. Also, before scanning with HJT, close all browser windows (you had Firefox open). Next time you scan with HJT, have it fix all entries that have (no file). Scan again and post a new log.

...An hour later, my computer was taken over by pop ups, if I tried to x them out my computer froze...

Just a tip, whenever getting popups, it's better not to 'X' them as sometimes this will cause them to 'execute' which can create more popups (or worse!). It is better to either right-click on them and select close, or use ctrl-alt-del to close each instance or, better yet, close Internet Explorer and clear all temp files and history.

When you unzip hijackthis, put it in it's own folder (like c:\hjt\hijackthis.exe).

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

You are also running HJT from a temp folder, please put it into a permanent folder (like c:\hjt\hijackthis.exe).

The additional RAM should surely help; I have Norton also, but have recently found recommendations for System Mechanic (www.iolo.com), which I am planning on trying. But it doesn't have an antivirus program with it. I believe there are good, free AV programs available (TrendMicro?).

Hope this helps a bit; you'll probably get more recommendations shortly.

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

What bios do u have? You can try doing a search for 'beep codes' for your bios. It sounds like it's a problem with your memory/RAM. Did you just install this memory card? If so, it could be incompatible with your system. If not, your RAM could be failing, and should probably be replaced.

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

I went to that web site and it is for windows98 second edition. I have the firsr edition so I don't think that will work. Are there any other suggestions?

That basically just leads you to the Windows Update site, go there and get all your Critical Updates and see if there is one that says Shutdown Patch.

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

Start here and see if things get any better:

Am madly copying all the files from D:\to C:\. Haven't turned the comp off for 2 days in case I can't see D:\ again. :D

Good idea! :) Is there a reason you still have Windows 95 on your computer? If not, after you get all your data copied, you could format it (use FAT32) and use it to store all your data -- away from your C drive (which is more likely to be attacked by intruders). You should still have backups somewhere else though!

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

is there any possible way to recover SOME of the files at least?

After you get another hard drive, install this old one as a slave and see if you can access the files. If not, try the restoration utility suggested earlier. But if the drive stops running entirely, it won't work. If the drive does stop working completely, do a search here for 'freezer' for a possible solution.

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

Sorry about the msconfig thing, I didn't notice you were using Win2K.

Close all windows, scan with HJT, and have it fix the following entries:
O2 - BHO: gcdexrfd - {0450EACE-ED6A-B9C6-A288-FEDCE78D21DE} - C:\WINNT\system32\gcdexrfd.dll (file missing)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WindUpdates] C:\Program Files\WindUpdates\WinUpdt.exe
O18 - Filter: text/html - {4F7681E5-6CAF-478D-9CB8-4CA593BEE7FB} - (no file)

Reboot into Safe Mode, go to C:\Program Files, and delete the folder WindUpdates.

Reboot normally, close all windows, scan with HJT, and post a new log.

To help prevent reinfection, get SpywareBlaster:
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
and keep it updated!

Thanks for reminding folks of that -- If you're running any cleaning progams and they don't seem to be getting 'everything,' try running them in Safe Mode! It's also a good idea to keep all temporary files emptied because some 'intruders' like to hang out in these.

...He worked 4 hours and cleaned my system for viruses and spyware for a substantial fee...
...PS. If I would have to re-install Windows and install all my back- up files I wonder if the problem I am having might persist due to a file that might cause this problem. Anyhow, reinstalling Windows 2K will my very last step to solve the problem...

Hi annelise, it's unfortunate that you had to spend money getting your system cleaned as we could have helped you do that yourself for free.

It is very unlikely that if you reinstall Windows the problem would persist. Hopefully you won't need to do that though. Do as Dark_Omen suggested and post your hijackthis log in the Security forum. Before you do that though, make sure you have version 1.98.2; if not, you can update it from the Update feature within hijackthis, or from here:
http://www.softpedia.com/progDownload/x-Download-5034.html
Also, make sure HJT is not running from a temporary folder or from your desktop, it should be in it's own folder similiar to this: c:\hjt\hijackthis.exe

P.S. Before you purchase anything, ask for opinons here; there most likely will be a free alternative, or possibly better options.

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

It sounds to me like your drive is dying. You could try to put it in a system as a slave drive and see if you have access to your data. If that doesn't work, you could try this utility:
