This device will certainly do the job, using JBOD:
http://www.datoptic.com/cgi-bin/web.cgi?product=eBOX-U&detail=yes
On the other hand, $265.00 is a lot of money to me.
At any given time I have at least 8-10 HDs lying around that I use for storage, or to replace HDs in dead machines.
Large drives are so cheap that it just plain isn't worth it to me to have these things hooked up all the time.
I have a USB/SATA/IDE/2.5" adapter that I can use to connect any of these drives at any time, and two external cases that I leave connected for current file storage.
You won't be able to use any of the software on these drives,as programs must be installed, and it's easy enough to wipe a drive if security is your concern.

You need to figure out what's causing the Freezing/Rebooting first.
Check for dust/dirt, fans not working, bad PSU.
If you're using Windows, you have to pay Mr. Gates, or switch to Linux for a free solution.

You can find out about Beep Codes here:

It seems likely you've installed the wrong RAM, or inserted it incorrectly:Be sure it's properly seated.

Have you reset the router to defaults?
You are going to get exactly nowhere until you can access the router configuration.

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

Do you get the same problem in Safe mode?
If not, this could be a driver issue.

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

Windows is just weird sometimes.
Try turning off the firewall and then turning it back on.

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

What are the power settings?
Maybe:
HD off
Monitor off
Standby
It just took a while to respond.

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

This is a DSL modem, so you need to set up a DSL connection on the router.
The manual or CD will help you with this, but I'd suggest you start by re-setting the router to defaults first.

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

The driver you need is here:
http://support.gateway.com/support/drivers/getFile.asp?id=20453&dscr=Gateway%20Notebook%20Intel%20SATA%20Support%20DriverVersion:%205.0.0.1032&uid=191255200
I assume the file will tell you how to install it.
That said I, think you're wasting your time if these files are important.
My fear is that if you install this driver you'll wipe your drive.
Take it to someone who knows what he's doing.

It sounds as though your parents have abdicated their responsibility for raising their child.
A restricted account is the right answer, but old fashioned discipline will work as well. (No computer access for x days, etc.).

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

Reset the router to defaults and try again.
If you still can't enter the page, the router is faulty or your firewall is blocking you.

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

Lots of possibilities.
Boot to the Windows CD and try system repair.

Is this the same type of connection and the same broadband provider?
One common solution is to power down everything (Remove the power cord from the router and the modem, turn off the PCs).
Turn on the Modem, wait, router, wait, PCs.
You may need to reset the router to defaults or contact your ISP.

It does no harm to create a new drive (Probably D: )
It would be considerably easier to just move some files to the other partition.
My Docs, for example, can be moved with Tweakui, and a disk cleanup would help.
Install new programs on D.

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

Boot to Safe Mode and try system restore.

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

"both options will not work. "
Be more specific about this. What, exactly, happens?

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

There is no need to install any software anywhere. The router needs to be properly configured, and you need a connection set up on each computer, but all the software you need is native to windows.

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

You can get some help with ICS here:
http://www.homenethelp.com/ics/ics-install-arch.asp
This would be significantly easier with a router.

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

Take a look at the View/Customize menu.
Try changing the folder type to documents.

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

E:\qw.exe sounds like as CD drive. This is probably where your backup files are located.
Typically, Quicken is installed on C:, and usually in Program Files. I think it might be in the Intuit Folder, but I don't have a way to check right now.
All is not lost. Use the search feature to find qw.exe, or just explore the Program files folder.
Once you find it, right click to create s a shortcut, then copy and paste that shortcut to your desktop or wherever you want it.

If it says "HP only", I'd believe it.
I use this file for all the SP2 installs I do, and it works:

There must be something really wrong with this machine.
If you want to select consecutive files, you click the first, then the last while holding the Shift key.. For non-consecutive files, use the control key.
I suspect further study of the Windows file system would benefit you (As it would many people).

'Stop telling me to change my file usage, and FIND HOW TO FIX THE ICONS!'

Heavens! I think you're finding this problem frustrating.
Still, you're no fun to work with, so, the best of luck to you.

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

The power connector shouldn't matter.
Are you saying that the SATA options in Figure 3 /Advanced don't show in your BIOS?
Some SATA mobo connectors are known for failing-try another connector or another cable.

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

This is the kind of crazy project I've tried in the past. I,m sure you realize there are many better ways to get this drive working, like spending $20.00 on an external case, or installing the drive internally.
That said, I believe you are correct about the controller being the issue.

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

I think the only issue here is the swap file.
Windows needs approximately 15% free space to function efficiently.
This issue confuses many people, but as far as I can tell, you are correct:Installed programs don't affect performance unless they have some memory resident component.

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

I was referring to the maker of the software.
"Fool" and "Stupidly" are your words.

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

You have a SATA drive, and it's no longer recognized by the OS.
If your files are really important, take it somewhere to recover them or follow the procedure I outlined above.

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

At this point, I would just remove it manually.
A good lesson about poorly managed software.
After you remove the folders, you may have to edit the registry, but let's wait and see for that.

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

Bobbyraw is correct. It's quite common to have both connections enabled.

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

It sounds as though these two share some files.
Reinstall the first version, then remove the second.

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

Is this a Gateway keyboard?
Try a standard keyboard, or a PS 2 keyboard.

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

A legit PC will have a label posted on the machine with the key .
There are several key finders here:
http://pcsupport.about.com/od/tipstricks/ht/findxpkey.htm

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

I would imagine it's clearly labeled.
In most cases, you can re-set the password by removing the battery for a few minutes.

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

This has to be changed in the router configuration page.
See page 25 of the manual, and change the default Lan IP address.
The manual is here:
http://www.edimax.com/images/Image/manual/Wire/BR-6104K/BR-6104K_M.pdf
After this change, the gateway should show as whatever you select, such as 192.168.1.1

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

There are several possibilities for the cause, but the solution seems pretty straightforward if the files are critically important.
There are several ways to access a disk without an operating system, and in my experience and your situation, I would remove the disk and attach it to another machine as described above..
A device like this one is all you need:
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2477926&Sku=V13-1113
Most laptops HDs are easy to remove, but give us your model number if you need help with this.

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

I'm an ex-army officer, and leery of getting in between two senior NCOs.
I would try System Restore.

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

Recovery console will not erase any files unless you tell it to.
That said, I'm not sure there is anything in Recovery console that will help, as you indicate the HD cannot be found.
There are some very convoluted techniques to run System Repair from recovery console, but I'm not sure I'd try that:
http://searchwincomputing.techtarget.com/tip/0,289483,sid68_gci1167895,00.html
What you can do is:
Remove the HD from the laptop.
Get a USB adapter and connect this HD to another computer to copy the relevant files.
Replace the HD and reinstall Windows.
I believe you were overzealous in your file deletion, and removed some files necessary to boot the computer.

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

Sounds good
can you tell me how to get my default gateway back??

Uninstall the security program, which may be blocking the gateway.

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

Make sure the video card is properly seated. Remove it and replace it, if necessary. This card may have a tab you have to push aside to remove it, so look at it carefully.
It could be that the card is bad, but that's quite a coincidence. Make sure the fan on this card is turning.

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

Start/Run
ipconfig /all
Press enter to copy.
Paste in message window.
Once you post this info, we'll be better able to advise you.

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

Are you using ethernet or USB to connect to the modem?
I have never heard of an ISP charging to check basic connectivity problems.
Post ipconfig /all.

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

It's likely that you're right.
Any security suite that's this unfriendly should be uninstalled.
Most of these programs have settings for allowing network connections, and you're welcome to poke around until you figure it out, but I think these programs are serious overkill for most home users.

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

My laptop works fine on this line, but the desktop still can't connect to the web. Could a NIC still allow me to ping and release/ renew, yet be damaged so as not connect to the internet?

Thanks

I wouldn't think so, but crazier things have happened.
Post ipconfig /all from this machine.

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

Good advice, but this is a simple job that any moderately talented person can do quickly and well at home.
If you hadn't cleaned it, you'd eventually get some overheating problems, which could cause any number of problems from shutting down to burning out components.

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

Remove the HD and use a USB adapter to copy the files to another computer.
You could also try a repair install.

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

Sure. Just install another OS like Ubuntu or buy a copy of your favorite OS.
Why do you want to do this?
Fees are quite variable, but $50.00-$100.00 an hour is close.
