Would someone please tell me what the "Windows Outreach Team"
is?
They seem to be posting a lot, and often with bad advice.

"You can do anything you can with windows just more reliable. "
I'm with TechTJ on this.
So far, you don't need to worry about AV and spyware apps, which is an enormous advantage. Mac hardware is very reliable, if a bit more expensive and limited.
Those who think Mac has any software advantage are just fanboys kidding themselves.
I prefer windows also, but I think those who just surf the web and email are better off with Mac or Linux.

Change the boot options in the BIOS (Boot from CD/DVD)

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

So you do have nuclear secrets?
If your data is that important or likely to start a world war or land you in jail, the only safe thing is to destroy the drive.
A full format is just fine in the vast majority of cases. There's just too much paranoia about this subject.

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

Format is fine for most cases, unless you have nuclear secrets or the formula for coke.

Dynamic IPs are not shared with anyone. Your ISP only has so many, so they change them as needed. No affect on you at all.
I've been assuming you have a router (The Gateway), but maybe I'm wrong about that. What's the exact configuration-the modem connects directly to the computer?
No router? Get one, with as many ports as you need.

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

Your ports are shown in the manual as SATA 1 Primary, Secondary) and the same for SATA 2(P,S).
Again, the manual isn't clear, but I'd assume these ports are adjacent.
I should also mention that you may be able to set up a single disk RAID as I have on my board. It's usually called RAID 0 + 1.
Set one pair to RAID and use the RAID setup to designate it.
For "Optimized Defaults", open the BIOS, press F7. These are the fail safe defaults that reset any changes you may have made.

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

The manual just isn't clear about this.
Try connecting both HDs to:
The same channel.
Different channels.
How are they connected now?
It's possible you need a BIOS update.

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

Look in the BIOS under "Integrated Peripherals" and make sure the SATA secondaries are enabled.

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

Is there a RAID setup involved? What's the BIOS setting for these ports?
My board has 4 SATA ports, but doesn't support SATA Optical drives.
I can't tell from your manual whether yours does or not.

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

I'm far from an expert, but something looks wrong here.
I don't see any need for the fixed IP addresses.
The 88.23.110.7 IP is the IP of your modem, and that's as it should be. The DHCP server would then hand out the 192.x.x.x addresses to the computers on your LAN. As far as it staynig the same, that's pretty common nowadays, but, eventually, it will change (See "lease Time").
So, with my limited knowledge:
Forget the fixed addresses.
Disable the DHCP server on the gateway.
Use the addresses handed out by the Modem.
I'm not a server guy, but I used this procedure to set up my second router (On the same network), and I think you'll find that's the right track.
Good luck.

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

That's up to you.
Your tax info wouldn't be of any use to anyone but a crook, and a thorough defrag would make it very difficult to get.
Delete your user account and files, everything in docs and settings, all cookies and temp files and you're basically good to go.
The alternative is to make him buy a copy of Windows, or install a free OS like Ubuntu.

If you want to use a hub, you'll need ICS.:

It's much easier to use a router.

Tell us more about the hardware setup.
In general:
Connect the modem to the WAN or internet port on the router (What router?)
Connect the router ports (Via ethernet) to the computers in question.

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

I agree.
It's easiest to pull the PS and get it checked, or check it yourself. I've seen PS testers at Office Depot for $15.00.

Power Supply.
You're probably right about the HD-clicking is a sure sign of problems.
Can you boot to the CD and remain stable?

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

It doesn't matter hiow you connect the new drive as long as you can identify it.
You'll boot to the Data Lifeguard disk and do a 'From:To" operation which is pretty automatic-just be sure the drives are properly identified.
No formatting or partitioning, except as done by the software.
Piece of cake.

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

What installation disk?

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

I haven't used the command line option, but think Exact Audio Copy will do what you want:

See the "Links" section for tutorials.

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

What installation disk?
The CD must have boot files to load at startup.

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

This is not a driver issue. Maybe faulty memory, bad PS or some such.
Why did the HD crash?
Check all your connections, reseat the memory, etc.

Get the appropriate Data Lifeguard software from WD and clone the drive.

I did an upgrade install of x64 from within Windows, but you needa clean install, of course.
My best guess is that you're somehow choosing the wrong partition. Do all the parameters of the selected install partition match the K partition shown?
What's the 87.8 Mb of data shown on K?

Half of the voters fell for the republicans scare tactics or voted for social causes that are not relevant to America's future.
The democrats failed to put up a decent candidate, so even a moron like Bush was able to flimflam the public, twice.

From MS:
"The Beta will stop working on August 1, 2009. To continue using your PC, please be prepared to reinstall a prior version of Windows or a subsequent release of Windows 7 before the expiration date. You won't be able to upgrade from the Beta to the final retail version of Windows 7. "
64 bit is here to stay. I've read that many, if not most, new computers come with 64 bit CPUs. As for drivers, the situation has improved a great deal in the last few years. I had a lot of problems with Vista x64, but none with Windows 7 on the same hardware.
In short, if you have a 64 bit CPU, go for it.

Minimum recommended specs call for:
1 GHz 32-bit or 64-bit processor
1 GB of system memory
16 GB of available disk space
Support for DirectX 9 graphics with 128 MB memory (to enable the Aero theme)
DVD-R/W Drive
Internet access (to download the Beta and get updates)
And yes, like anything tech-related, these specs could change.

I don't see what else you can do. This sounds like a major hardware failure-motherboard, disk controller or something.

hughv 104 Veteran Poster

Have you tried booting with an OS disk or your recovery disks?

Hello everyone,

Currently my Toshiba Tecra M4 tablet PC shows the initial startup Power On Self Test (POST) screen with the Toshiba logo. It then freezes. There is no beeping, and I cannot enter the BIOS (nothing happens when I press Esc or F1).

The laptop did not have any physical trauma before this freeze-up started (literally sat on a desk between working and non-working as I will describe below). I hope it's not a hardware problem, but since I can't even get into the BIOS, I don't have my hopes up.

Here is what happened immediately before this symptom began to happen: I had the computer on (and it was working perfectly) and it went into stand-by mode on its own. When I tried to revive it, the screen stayed blank. After waiting around for a few minutes, I held down the power switch to force it to shut off. I then turned it on and there was a message saying "Resume failure" and it froze. After waiting for a few minutes (the Toshiba POST screen never shows up) I turned it off again.

After that, every time I turn it on now, the system hangs at the initial Toshiba screen and does not respond to any keyboard commands. After I press Esc or any other key 15 times (in an effort to get to the BIOS) the computer starts beeping anytime I press a key. …
