So we've had reports of issues early in the morning (EST) of issues, and today's issues aren't exactly related, but we are aware of the cause and are working on fixing them now.

Several of the distributions now contain a way to encrypt a hard disk so that it can't be mounted until you put in a password, it really depends on what OS your using. More information about the software installed, like OS, kernel version, etc. would be helpful.

/etc/ssh should be where the system config is held, and .ssh can contain a lot of things including a copy of anything that can be placed in /etc/ssh, but with local user overrides.

Your going to get a better resolution with most pc monitors when you get above 22" than you will with a TV of the same size. as long as you keep it <30" though, it shouldn't be that noticeable.

The 'water' thing isn't only when there are problems, a lot of people become used to their 'local' water sources, and can get rather sick if it changes. Usually bottled water is a good idea whenever you go somewhere outside of your comfort zone (for most people, it's a city, …

There are converters, but a simple google search could tell you that, which, you apparently know because you were able to spot the mis-information in the next post. Can this be marked solved?

Most games make little to no use of multi-core processors, so having the higher clock speed is better than upgrading from a dual-quad core computing. Vista is *very* resource intensive, but personally, I like a lot of the features it gives. I wouldn't use it on my gaming PC, because …

Based on that google search: * CPU: AMD 64 3200+ / Intel Pentium 4 3.0GHz + * Memory: 512MB (XP) or 1GB (Vista) * HD Space: 8GB * Graphical Card: Nvidia 6600GT/ATI Radeon 1600XT or higher (Shader 3.0 or better) with 256MB memory That means it only requires a single …

This is default behavior for many FTP daemons, which allows for unique ports to be opened for file transfers, to keep port 20/21 open to allow new connections. You can configure a 'port range' in the vsftpd.conf then add the entire range to iptables to be allowed. The other option, …

It can also be caused by running out of hard drive space and/or corrupt cache. Check to see if clearing the cache works.

Those of you running vista know what I'm talking about. Mine is currently 3.6 but that is because my video card doesn't have drivers, I expect it to goto at least 5.6 once I get those installed (as that is the next lowest number on the page) :cheesy:

Most linux distrobutions use the AMD64 installer for all 64bit processors (regardless of AMD/Intel) You can find Ubuntu's 64bit installers here: http://mirror.cc.columbia.edu/pub/linux/ubuntu/releases/edgy/

I think that the issue occurs here: " C 28-233405.982000 b78 Unable to set TCP_NODELAY: Invalid argument" Vista did quite a bit of changing (network wise) with their new OS, and it probably caused some issues with the application your attempting to run. What version of the Yahoo! software are …

Processors generate heat. It is a very simple concept, with the newer processors, they are more 'energy efficient' which means they *will* perform less work, and thus generate less heat when you are doing nothing on the computer. Unless you are running one of the original Pentium series processors, you …

Personally, I've used firefox, since... well, at least the last 3 years. I find myself using the new IE more these days, just for basic compatability reasons. The new IE now offers the features I loved about firefox, so I don't really see a need to use firefox on a …

The underscore words were a preventative measure against a user that was abusing them. That has been removed. The ban was because you were flat out abusing the system, you would think after 6 kicks you would get the idea you weren't supposed to do something.

If the windows machine has the internet, you'll need to enable internet connection sharing in windows. This should automatically set the Windows machine's ip to 192.168.0.1 and enable DHCPd, which will automatically issue ip addresses. Just set the NIC on the Linux machine to DHCP, and it should do the …

For those that like Total Annihilation (I loved it), you'll be happy to know, the maker pretty much made a new game based on the same concept, game, etc. but with newer graphics: http://www.supremecommander.com/ It is a pretty heavy resource intensive game, but I love it!

If you can elaborate on the grub error that would be helpful. ntldr can work with linux/windows dual boot, except it is slightly more difficult to setup than grub. If you can also provide your default OS entry from your grub.conf that would help in troubleshooting the error message.

Yes, NTP is installed by default, and the MAN pages on the configuration file explain how to use USB capable devices (In this case, I assume the GPS has a USB connection to the computer) to control the time.

This sounds almost like a linux fan club post, but I'll bite. My Vista install boots faster than my RHEL5 (Redhat) install, in about 30 seconds. Your getting that due to the horrid java scripts that these people have in place to pop up advertisements etc. While it may not actually be a 'virus' if you don't have ad-blocker, you may want to be warned of malware.

Just wanted to add a little note, I work with people and personally have a Linux box that plays World Of Warcraft, Counterstrike source, and several other popular games by using Cedega from 'http://www.transgaming.com/' This does have additional monthly costs, however in my personal opinion well worth it.

While we don't recommend breaking your workplace rules, since it could get you fired, it is rather easy to bypass DNS. Each system has a 'hosts' file located in the c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\ folder, you would place an entry like this into that file: 216.178.38.131 www.myspace.com myspace.com This will allow your system …
