The ISP Typically has a DHCP Lease setup for your location, which reads your modems MAC Address. These are typically set to 7 days, or 24 hours (depends on the ISP). If you get a new modem, or you leave your exsisting modem off for the length of the DHCP …

Game development would definately bring a different crowd than Playing games. Personally, starting up a gaming section of this website (could) be good, however most people that 'play' games would most likely violate the rules more than the average poster. The trick would be keeping the 'kiddies' out of the …

That really doesn't answer her question, but keep in mind this is game development, not the typical 'Gamer' forum :D

I noticed this ad for real estate when I was looking in the windows forums, and noticed a few interesting things. 1. Who wants to rent from someone named Leeat Hacker .... 2. The prices of NYC aparements rent are almost 4-5 times what a Mortgage payment is here …

Unfortunately, the only legal way to get a key is from microsoft. Noone here will be able to provide you one without breaking their Terms Of Service (ToS).

Vista is going to be rather expensive, it will be $300 for the Ultimate upgrade last I checked here in the states. This is expensive for an upgrade, but next to the $600 PS3, I'm sure people will find Vista is more useful.

The obvious choice is to use the XP Backup Wizard. Microsoft actually has a very detailed article on how to use this wizard: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/setup/learnmore/bott_03july14.mspx

Well, you state it is DDR memory, is it DDR or DDR2? Do you know if it's ECC Registered? A general rule of thumb (to avoid issues) is to always update your RAM with 2 sticks at a time. Most of the newer motherboards require ECC memory, which requires you …

Several, however I don't really think it's the kernel that is really the issue. 2.6 actually has far better driver support than 2.4 for the regular user, what exactly isn't working for you?

Once the monitor shows the login screen, does it work if you reboot the system? My wife had an issue with her ATI video card, where her monitor was connected to a DVI slot (her monitor supports multiple connections), but it doesn't ever showing the booting process, only the screen …

This really isn't true, I have benchmarks from my personal PC (which are on a disconnected HD) which showed that some of my games actualy played 'better' on vista. Specifically, the ones in beta, which are coded to take advantage of DX10. Granted, you do have to have a pretty …

The public beta is over, it is no longer downloadable to the general public. You will need to have an MSDN subscription, or become an OEM provider to get it before January 30th.

I would assume he is aware of that, seeing as how the disk 'works fine' on an older DVD drive. My assumption is that it was either 1. burned in the wrong format, 2. wasn't finalized, or 3. The DVD Read lasers inside the drive are not functioning correctly. 3 …

Depending on what OS you are running, some versions of windows have issues connecting with others. One thing to check is if the windows firewall is enabled, because by default, this will block the required ports for file/printer sharing. You may try to get the ip address of each device, …

If the drive is a CD/DVD burner, personally I use Nero for burning both. In order to get the DVD to play, you'll need a DVD player application. If you arn't looking to 'buy' any software for this, Windows Media Player 'may' work with all of the correct codecs/updates. Personally, …

Some of the new security features with IE7 prevent downloading files with .exe or .zip extensions. For the end user, this provides a little more security, but a big hassle in terms of getting things done. One thing I would recommend is resetting the internet security setting to 'Medium' in …

Windows XP still has the msconfig utility, I would recommend using this utility to try to set which services are on boot. One other thing I would recommend is checking the event viewer for any logs that might indicate that something is changing these settings. In a very rare case, …

First thing I would attempt is (at the same menu he mentioned before) at the F8 screen, goto 'Last Known Good Configuration'. Typically if a machine is booting fine one minute, then isn't the next, something got updated on your system. This will effectivly roll back any changes to the …

"XOAL-UAS-MB authentication failed." This typically means that the authentication settings arn't set correctly. For the record, XP 64bit wasn't as popular a few months back (when this was created), it has just really started to take off in the recent months. What settings do you have for the e-mail connection …

The only legal place to download it would be Microsoft's MSDN. And no, it won't install on Virtual PC (at all), but it does 'somewhat' install on VMware. Read my post here however: http://www.daniweb.com/techtalkforums/thread60569-2.html

For the record, yes, SSL is a great way to ensure that your customers and users are at the site they expect, and not lured to some other site with fake content. I do recommend that every place that *sells* anything get one :)

This is a Microsoft application called "Active Content Wizard", which was probably installed on your system with another application, or via windows updates. On most systems, it shouldn't really affect performance.

I used to get this on my old laptop, but it seemed to fix itself when I installed vista. When I re-formated with XP (about a month later), I didn't have the problem again, I think it's because of the video card drivers :)

Well, if the alternate keyboard didn't work, I would go out on a limb to say that you lost power to the ps2 port. (assuming you are using ps2 to connect your keyboard). One thing you may try to do is 1. get a USB Keybord, or a PS/2 to …

Unless you are planning to buy an 8800 GTX, you should be ok. From personal experience the GTX takes about 175 watts of my 750 Watt power supply, with my other accessories, this pretty much drains about 600 watts :(

On XP, you have to have 1 administrator account that is not 'Administrator' if you want seperate accounts. Once you create the first user with 'Administrator' privledges, then you can create 'limited' accounts. The 'Administrator' user will no longer show up on the login screen either. depending on the specs of the computer, I seriously doubt this is a hardware issue (unless it's maybe a failing hard disk), but more than likely is an IRQ conflict between the drive controller and maybe one of the items in a PCI slot. First thing I would do is …

Are you talking about your hostname? localhost is the default entry for the loopback address. if you are talking about this:
[linux@localhost.localdomain linux]$
You can change this using the 'hostname' command:
hostname new.hostname.here
Then change your network config file to specify your new hostname. In Redhat this is typically located …
