Thanks for the response. I do use zone alarm and prefer to continue.

The problem does not occur when using xp, on on vista laptop which would indicate problem is with Vista.

Best,
Neil

ok, so you use zone alarm and wish to continue!
what about the extensions and java mentioned it post #2.
have you tried disabling them

I have Win XP Prof which unfortunately has turned out to be a counterfeit copy. I am experiencing losing my Broadband internet connection and am also unable to download all of Microsofts security updates.

Would my counterfeot software account for my problems.

Brent

it is my opinion that the copy of xp has nothing to do with your losing the internet connection ,more likely a bad nic card or modem/router,even a bad cat45 cable

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

Couldn't figure out where else to post this -

How long should Norton Disk Doctor take? I've had it running for like 2 days (??)... it can't possibly take this long can it? It was read Drive C: 85% but then later it's showing 28%? Also Pass 3 of 8 (so maybe it switched to another pass?). I have no clue what it's doing. It seemingly would run forever....(or at least a week!).

it will keep runing ,if it not finding any errors on the disk just stop it !

>So I'm just wondering are these questions a little bit too complicated for
>some people to answer of are everyone looking just for answers as well.
It's a combination of not knowing the answer, or not feeling compelled to answer. I could answer lot of the questions in the forums I frequent, but I choose not to because of time constraints or I'm simply not interested enough in the topic to spend time on it.

On the other hand, the number of members with questions greatly outweighs the number of members with answers. You'll see that on pretty much every forum, there's a small number of regulars who answer questions consistently and rarely ask them. It goes without saying that this situation can easily result in questions not getting answered because the few people answering questions are overwhelmed by the mass of questions.

so in short ,you are not so much here to help others, but for the community camaraderie!
i like helping and come here solely for that purpose ,wish i knew more ,wish i could say I could answer most questions asked but chose not to! we all have out reasons !

Hi. I have the blue screen problem, too but I'm unable to log onto the computer at all. I've tried getting on safe mode, but the blue screen pops up then as well. Is there any way for me to fix this?

you need the winxp cd ,to boot to the recovery console ,to run a command like , chkdsk /f

like this one , http://www.daniweb.com/forums/thread156947.html , is this a question or a lesson ! post one reads like English as a second language, and post 6 reads totally different, and original poster knows the answer to his first post

I just joined this site and I notice that most of the questions asked by members are either viewed alot and left unanswered or answered by one or two persons. So I'm just wondering are these questions a little bit too complicated for some people to answer of are everyone looking just for answers as well.. :icon_question:

.............................
I just don't wanna exist, I wanna live to change the world

a bit yes and no as far as I'm concerned, not complicated so much ,as a lot of post just make no scene to me , or like sillyboy said the person just doesn't search and try a find out the answer by reading what other's have found to work for them ,they want us to do it for them !

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (http://www.malwarebytes.org/) to your desktop.

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* At the end, be sure to checkmark the Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.

yeah, its called a firewall .lol
you should be able to configure zonealarm to do that ,don't ask me how, because i don't use it !

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

I understood the poster already tried sfc /scannow but the command prompt disappeared without any message?

i realize that ,it quickly disappears sometimes because it not run from cmd ,just the run command ,happens with regedit and other commands ! humor me and try it before you reinstall vista

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

I use task manager and type in command to do my works.

type in CMD and then ,sfc /scannow , to see if it will keep running sfc,you will need you winxp cd to replace missing of corrupt system files,

No i do not have this file. I use Vista 64 if this helps.

Thank you

that means little to me .
what is the actual error on the screen when you get the blue screen error !

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

My system restores don't go 2 months back, for some reason, so that option is definitely out.

ok,then if its really important that you run 16 bit programs then maybe reinstall fresh copy of winxp and don't install windows latest updates ,if you think thats what caused the problem .,sorry cant answer you question as to what Microsoft is up to with causing this problem

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

I am closing this thread and opening a new one about the 16 bit engine not working anymore. Maybe I'll get a better idea of what has happened?

i don't see how closing this one and starting a new on about the same problem is going to change the response you get ,i would suggest a system restore back to before the 18th when it last worked ,

So I already started looking around for RAM up to 533Mhz and I found this one:

Kingston Memory/ValueRam 1GB 533MHz DDR2 non ECC CL4
Productcode: KVR533D2N4/1G

If I buy 2 of these, will these be compatible with my system?

More info (in dutch, but understandable): http://www.techdepot.nl/ArtikelDetails.aspx?ArticleCode=KVR533D2N4-1G&Source=Vergelijk

Thanks in advance for any help!

correct ,but if money is an issue, and you already have 1 gig of 400, ,i would go with the 400mhz as i wouldn't notice the difference between the two!,now from 400 to 667 you would have noticed a difference

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

Thank you both for your quick responses and great answers, yet I have one more question: How would I go about finding out whether or not my motherboard is compatible with the 667 ones?

usually by going to the web site of the board maker ,if you know the make and model # post it here and we could help you look for that info

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

correction if anyone read what i first posted
. it means pc800 and pc1600 and may not be compatible with the board .
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RDRAM

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

Ok... So, is there any significant increase in performance if I buy two of the 667MHz and replace the 444MHz, or could I just as well just buy 1 more 444MHz and save me some money?

sure there would be an increase in performance ,the price difference will be little or none !.but you do have to make sure that the board takes the 667

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

i guess you will have to download the programs on another computer and use a usb thumb drive to get them to your computer and install them,if they will not install ,just change the name of the file ,be sure not to change the extension, and try installing again

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague
caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

Ok. I will format the HDDs, reinstall OS, and re-create the RAID. I will get back to you how this goes, if the hang is fixed or not. I will begin backup of data now.

I don't have any spare drives so I can't do your idea.

if you have a lot of data ,and new data all the time, a raid -0 is really not recommended for you !if raid fails you will lose all data on both drives ! or something like that !

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

you don't say what you tried, so!!!did you try the detect and repair option in Help on the toolbar in either program.
also in outlook tools/options/ spelling and check that it using English .you may nee the office disk if it set to french and need to be changed

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

My PC Repair store owner and I differ about this method he reformat and charged the job out.

I to like to fix the problem ,my own ,,but for the store owner its not cost effective to try and fix the problem anymore as it can take days ,as shown by how long its taking you to fix this one .imagine if the store owner did this with the many computers he get to fix ,there would not be enough time in his week to fix them all ,so format is the most efficient way to fix it !

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

ok ,now you need the one marked chipset for motherboard drivers ,and the network one for you network adapter ,the broadcom driver .and there are 2 different wireless one so you will have to check with the laptop documentation, should have come with the laptop .or written on the box it came in , to find what one you have . or you will not be able to connect to the internet
