My computer uses SDRAM :)
What does that mean anyway?? (SD)

what that means is you have an old computer ,you are 3 generation behind ,there is ,sdram then ddr-sdram ,ddr2 and ddr3 ,neither of which will work in you computer ,that is unless you board was made in anticipation of the upcoming ddr ram ,and it may have slots for ddr sdram also ,but not ddr2 or 3 .

What are the different meanings for the different ram types out there and what makes one kinds better/worse than any other?

sd=singal data ,ddr =double data rate , the main difference is bus speed ! and that is listed in the numbers . like pc66,pc100 or pc133 sdram ,then the ddr went by # like ,pc1600/2100/2700/3200/4000,and corrosponding bus speed like pc166/pc266/pc333/pc400 or what ever .
ddr2 and 3 are numbered like the ddr, pc5000 and up ,all with bus speed numbers to,like the sdram , so very confusing at time ,

Would there be any problem in me trying to use system recovery disks from my own computer, a different make and with XP Home on. Could that work on a different make of computer? I would be quite happy to have XP Home installed on my wife's computer instead of 2000 professional.

nope ,not a chance ,you need to go buy xp home for it

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

what it boils do to is ,the recovery should not be asking you to delete non -dos partitons ,unless some made changes to the partitions since the last time iwin2000 was installed .like deleting the partition that most recoveries use to perform a recovery

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

above poster sounds correct ,

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

I am sorry about the reply, i mis-read the keep it simple stupid. i am new to computers and technical jargon. I thought that you were calling me stupid because i did not know how to fix a problem. a simple mis-read quote. try to be careful when sending someone technical help, people do get stressed when things are not working the way they should and it is so easy to mis-read an answer when in actual fact you are trying to help. so once again , I AM SORRY.

ha, i never even see the quote till now !
anyway did you try uninstalling and reinstalling the device

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

for internet look for a PCMCIA network adapter .like these ,http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/category/category_slc.asp?CatId=588
your laptop amy not take the 32 bit ones not sure though !

i just bought on ebay for my old ibm

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

just apply you basic knowledge , or search google.com for that model laptop manual, having said that they are hard to find as acer doesn't want you to fix you own ,but they usually come apart by prying up the bezel around the top of the keyboard like the Dell ,and removing some small screws, and maybe a screw or 2 on the back, they usually have a little keyboard symbol by them

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

Do I have a compatibility problem?

didn't you check before buying it to see it was compatible.
if this is your board . http://www.epox.com/usA/product.asp?id=EP-8HDA5plus , then yes it's a miss match the new video card is pci-e and your board has agp video slot and 5 regular pci slots only,no pci-e[express] slots

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

missmatch maybe ,but the board does support 8 gig .

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

try uninstall the mouse/mouse pad .in device manager ,rebooting and reinstalling drivers ,maybe.
if you take files from other sources and copy them to the laptop you can get viruses ,don't need to connect to the internet to get them .if that does nothing try downloading and running www.superantispyware.com tool to check for nastiest that may be causing it

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

already tried that, keeping it simple , STUPID. any other ideas ?

i hope you are calling yourself Stupid!!lol

sorry forgot i was in vista forum ,not sure if the recovery disk will do you could try it i guess .
I don't really thing it will fix you missing dll's anyway

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

also if you find any of these are using a lot of cpu resources you could do the following .
do a alt+ctrl+del and open windows task manager

SearchFilterHost.exe

SearchProtocolHost.exe

SearchFilterHost.exe

Try and disabling the .XML file extension from being indexed in the Indexing Options control panel.

http://game.amd.com/us-en/drivers_catalyst.aspx?p=xp/radeonx-xp

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

go to run in start! and type in sfc /scannow. to fix and replace missing windows files ,you will need the winxp cd in the drive to replace files , if any are missing

Quick-Study commented: I have learned, thank you +1
caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

I appreciate your help as I am simply lost on this one...

hi,only one monitor means you have incorrect drivers installed ,go here and download swi standalone , it doesn't install it runs from the exe, run it and in the left pane scroll to video click it and in the right pane it should show your video adapter info
http://www.gtopala.com/siw-download.html

also when i checked for drivers in the link in my other post ,it comes up with the same driver for all 3 v 8.10 go for option 1

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

i think it had to be chosen when you installed spybot ,

right click on the desktop go to properties /display settings / you should see 2 monitors ,one default ,right click on the #2[secondary ] one and click on attached and see what happens.
if both monitory don't show up in settings ,maybe you need latest drivers from ATI/AMD web site ,.
http://ati.amd.com/support/driver.HTML

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

It is an AMD and so does not have SSE.

it doesn't then get it some !lol

I no little or nothing about you problem or SSE ,so i search and see was created by inter in response to amd's 3dnow ,so im guessing here but did you check you 3dnow functions !maybe the game is just to much for you system to handle ,but then again you may have a 1000.00$ Quad core watasa ma callit install in a 600.00$ motherboard who knows, you didn't mention anything about you system

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

hi,it maybe software ,maybe hardware ,may be neither !
unplug power cord ,open the case and make sure its fans are not all plugged up with dust bunnies first ,
if no big dust bunnies around , remove ram stick and reset them and try again to boot up comp!

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

stupidly went messing about with system32

glad you said it first !
so i guess you didn't smartly rename the original to shell32.dll.old ,so you could just rename it back , in case something like this happened ,
my suggestion to you would be to run a repair install with your winxp cd ,and if you don't have a winxp cd ,then i cant offer any more solution's !.
repair install instructions .

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

What could be the possible problem of my p.c.? Is it the on board video graphics adapter and the AGP slot of my motherboard?

not likely

I just need some comments and advices if do i need to buy video card. If I need to buy, what should it be, PCI or AGP video card?
thank you

if you do determine it to be video ,get agp of course ,as pci is slower !

have you tried removing ram and booting computer .maybe 1 stick at a time

File Association for web pages could be wrong

With all files on your system Windows needs to know which application to run to open the file. For example the ".doc" file extension would open Microsoft Word if you had Word installed on your PC. The same is with web pages, Windows needs to know that for certain pages it needs to open your browser. To change this follow these steps:

1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Accessories, and then click Windows Explorer.

2. Click Tools, click Folder Options, and then click File Types.

3. In the Registered File Types box, click URL:File Transfer Protocol, and then click Advanced.

4. In the Actions box, click Open, and then click Advanced.

5. The Application Used To Perform Action box may display the path to your Web browser as a short file name or as an incorrect path. Type the path to your Web browser with the full file name. For example, the following path may appear in the Application Used To Perform Action box.
c:\progra~1\intern~1\iexplore.exe
Change the path to the following path:
"c:\program files\internet explorer\iexplore.exe" (including the quotation marks).

6. Click OK, and then click Close.

7. Repeat …
