When ever I open the task manager on my machine, it shows the CPU usage at least 46%. However, when I look at the processes, the idle process is at 96, meaning the other processes are only taking 4%. I have a dual 2.4GHZ running XP SP 3 with 2GB of RAM. I re-imaged this machine from Vista to XP. I installed all the drivers from dell (all though my device manager still shows a ? for a PCI Device.) I am curious if it does not recognize the second process? What could be eating up the CPU but not show in the process list?

The reason this is a problem is because I am trying to play a game that is going slow. When ever I look at the cpu usage at that point it is pushing 99%. My thinking is, if I find what is eating up the cpu and stop it, it would help. I have a second laptop that is almost the identical setup, but 3GB of ram. My CPU on this machine sits around 4% when idle.

Any advice?

this program will help identify the pci device .

no need to apologize ,the link was just to give you a little something to read ,,to gather a little knowledge about what it is you want to do >
there is know way i could take you through it step by step !

go back to my first response ,,do you have a winxp cd to install xp, if your WIN ME is working so bad why would you want to leave it on the computer.

before i leaned so much about computer i paid a computer tech fix my serious problems ,and i learned what i know [what ever that is ]now by reading links like the one i posted above !

so if you want to run both ME and XP ,you would be best off to reinstall ME start new ! ,then install XP ,always install oldest OS, first .but if it were me i would forget ME all tougher.

one more link that is a must read for a first time installer of winxp ,.

ASCF which then went on to find 9000 odd problems!

those were likely just minor registry errors ,and it also removed important file ,so actually it was more the cause of you problem then a fix !wasn't it.

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

you should always back up your file [if they mean anything to you ]regardless if you plan on reload windows or not ,some day out of the blue you harddrive could fail completely ,Yes you will have to reinstall all program and drivers if you format and reinstall win2000 ,ASC was over kill for trying to remove malware ,most of it is a registry cleaner i thing .should have tried malwarebytes ,or superantispyware .

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

maybe and only maybe ,but i think if you go to control panel /add and remove programs ,look on the left for add windows components ,you should find messenger in there ,mind you i haven't used winxp for a yr now but if memory serves me it should be there

nor sure if you can create a disk with vist and its 2 service pack combined ,i know i use to do it with winxp using nlite program ,but its only for xp 2000 and server 2003, they made vlite for vista ,but it looks like its buggy

any you could just install vista and then download sp1 and sp2 and install them.

sp1= http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/bb738089.aspx

sp2 = http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/dd262148.aspx

try entering set up and disable bios cache or shadowing.

the setup this is referring to is actually the BIOS ,usually accessed by hitting f1 or DEL keys .

Message goes on saying, " If I recently installed any programs to delete them and restart your computer."
If I delete these programs how will I be able to install them again?

if you recently installed them then you would have the install file for them would you not

There is a virus that can rename or even delete system files this will cause the computer to boot in safe mode but not in Normal Mode. All files are not required for a safe boot up. You can try running a program in safe mode that is called "ReImage" it will most of the time repair your system with new files that are missing or damaged due to this virus. I am not associated with this ReImage program in no way, but I have seen it work. Good Luck!

Reimage ,it only got one review on download .com and it wasn't a good one .http://download.cnet.com/Reimage-Repair/3000-18512_4-10907808.html

My 7 year old Intel 32 bit motherboard passed away. I'l like to replace it with a 64 bit motherboard, processor and memory and still run my Xp Pro hard drive and DXD/CD. Here's the big question: will Xp boot up on the 64 bit hardware? I'm assuming I'll have to load some 64 bit drivers for the printer, etc.

Thanks,
Speedy

first no problem using you harddrive and dvd rom ,but you will [most] likely have to reinstall winxp ,you won't need to run 64 bit drivers if you are using a 32 bit winxp ,you will need to use 32 bit drivers for everything ,no advantage to having a 64 bit motherboard unless you install a 64 bit windows OS

1)my desk top switches on as soon as i plug to power supply, eventhough i did not use push button

this is normal[with most computer brands ] ,its because you are not shutting it down correctly .

2) when i touch metal part of cpu i get minor shock

this is certnly not normal, maybe be bad power supply,or bad ground .

3) it require frequent booting, due primery ide slave gets disabled
and also secondery ide slave gets disabled

also not normal ,could be releated to the bad power connection/short.what ever .

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

i was actually going to suggest that as something to try.

did you try disabling the firewall just to try it

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

so I had to use a work around which isn't exactly stable.

and ,is as you know, likely the sole cause of your problems

the more details should have taken you to adobe web site.
do you use windows firewall or a third party firewall by chance ,try disabling the firewall you use ,and then try connecting to adobe or r updating a plug in JRiver Media Center

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

ok, i now agree ,but don't have an answer ,in both those examples it should be just trying going to a website ,do you by chance have a problem with links in emails ,if you use outlook xpress or outlook email program,
also do you have adobe reader on you computer ,if yes open it go to help/improve program option ,click on the more details link do it go to adobe site
