With regard to dells, some dells have a recovery partition and no OS media. Installing/upgrading the OS will destroy it. However you are able to make or send off for a CD.

No ,it would have 2 partitions,Vista + the recovery ,you could format the 1st partition and make 2 partions in it, ending up with two partition + the recovery partition.load xp on the first partition and the recovery of vista on the second partition .
Guy i know bought a new Dell with vista ,he hated it ,most of his software didn't work with vista,so he wanted to buy xp pro ,remove vista and install xp ,Dell told him it would void his warranty

reformat and reload ,what everyone who buys a Dell should do to get rid of all the demo s--it on them .

and if its a Dell you better check with them about if it will affect you warranty .

Good morning ,I just turned on the laptop ,running on battery power ,no lines but a little shake ,plug it in and i get more shake and the lines appear.

Hello all,working on a gateway laptop,the lcd jumps and has small white horizontal lines that don't go all the way across, but come from both sides,all over the screen ,like static interference,laptop would eventually lock up .but will work and keep running when hooked to my desktop computers monitor.I have been running scans and uninstalling programs for about 3or4 hrs now with it hooked to monitor,switched over to laptop and with in 2 min freezes for awhile and comes back ,right now i use fn/f4 to switch back to laptop ,it stays for about 30 sec,and switches back on its own.when i first go to laptop lcd shows dim ,gets brighter then starts to bounce/flicker ,takes about 15 seconds,thanks

why not just load the bare winxp and move it over ,then load norton and the updates after the move .
make sure both drives formated the same either fat32 or ntfs ,i suggest ntfs,load the small drive with xp then install the big drive as master and small drive as slave ,using the hardrive software copy the partition from the small to the big .

if you are looking to create a lot of the same dvd ,there are dvd duplicators ,although expensive .
It is time consuming ,just last nite i use Nero to convert and burn 5 file about 1 gig in total .im not sure of the total time but would say close to 2 3/4 hrs.there are programs like DVD clone,dvd shrink,dvd decripter and on and on just google search for dvd software.5 hrs is quite long ,but it all depends on speed, like the CPU speed and total ram in you friends computer, and the speed of the disks and the dvd burner you used .

Its only about 18 months old, and it doesn't get used extensively so it shouldn't really be a faulty hard drive.

from what i can find in a google search ,that file belongs to Symantec Eraser Control,or Norton ,did or do you you have Norton antivirus installed . if you recently uninstalled it it may have left that file behind ,i suggest norton removal tool to clean all nortons from you computer ,Or,If you have Norton install then i suggest you uninstall with the tool,and reinstall Noton to fix that file

Sorry, I think I just understood your post caperjack. Will this not just loose all my data,? because thats what my local shop said. If it helps, when I press repair having booted from the cd, and it asks which drive to I want to use, there is no windows option (i.e. no C:\WINDOWS). The only selection available is E:\MINIT, which I'm guessing is the CD. I'm thoroughly confused :(

That's so odd you say that cause I got it from File Hippo it was version 3.25 full. Maybe it's not compatible with my rig? I don't know I'd like to try something else but I don't want to keep trying things causing the restart to happen again and again. Will these restarts cause any damage to my system?

I would try 3.01 full ,I don't think the restarts will cause any physical damage,could corrupt you registry maybe, .thing is you system should not restart just because you click on a exe file

there is a bios battery in a laptop that you will need to unplug ,no jumpers,depends on you laptop brand as to where the battery is, inside definitely, under the hood! ,

if you have a regular winxp cd and not a recovery cd,you can reinstall windows over top of existing windows ,here's how .
boot to the cd,don't choose the R for repair ,choose to reinstall windows when asked ,then you will be giving the option to install or R for reapair the second time ,choose R and it will copy over existing winxp install .

try a different version maybe where did you download it from .try here maybe don't get the latest ,try a slightly older version maybe .

doesent sould to me like you flashed the bios,after you booted to the floppy did you run the flash utility from the floppy to copy the ned bios info to the cmos chip.if not then its not likeyly you did flash the bios.did you remove the floppy from the laptop !!

turn on the computer to get into the bios.the compaq boot screen is after the bios also try hitting tab key to remove the compaq screen

What might cause my Dell Inspiron 600m to flash to a blue screen (of death) for a split second then turn off? I'm guessing because it gets like overheated from playing games or something, but it's happened like 4 or 5 times recently and never before that so I'm just wondering if there's some obvious reason for it.

It will help if can ger the bsod error message.,turn off aouto shutdown ,
right click on mycpmuter/properties/advanced/start up and recovery ,settings, uncheck auto restart in system failure section. the next time you get bsod you should get the error message right it down and post it back here .

Hello ,ripping means to remove files from a cd or dvd to harddrive for burning .
Any dvd burning software will rip a disk to the harddrive before burning it to a disk .you can also ripp to harddrive for storage ,windows media player will ripp songs from music cd and save them to the hdd,then you can do as you please with them .

could be power supply ,you should be able to take the case apart and get a general idea of where the smell is coming from by sniffing around ,you may even be able to see the burnt item!!

Darren is right, this computer has a BIOS password.. and may be the keyboard on the laptop has a stuck key (possibly the Del or F2 key which helps in getting in to the BIOS as the case may be)..

because all this while the user did not have trouble logging in to windows, out of the blue this problem seems to have come.. I would suggest to check for any stuck key by manually pressing and releasing each and every key.. this might help.. let us know after trying..

only thing you can do is buy a dvd burner that is made for your model laptop.expensive!!

ok ,that means it burns CD-R and playes DVD's ,it does not burn DVD's ,that why it doesn't read the blank dvd.

its usually on the front of the drive tray .look for DVD-RW or DVD multi recorder

to my knowledge ie6 does not have a popup blocker of its own ,i don't use it ,so is it google popup blocker thats blocking it ,if so disable google toolbar when you want to do banking or get a real browser and download FIREFOX

and it will not unless its a dvd-rw,just because it plays movies doesn't make it a dvd-rw.it has to be a dvd burner to recognize blank dvd's ,a lot of laptops have cd-rw/dvd player combos,so they only play dvd and burn CD's
