in you first post you said that the cdrom/dvd makes a noise so it must be tuning on somewhat,there is a monitor plug on the back ,blue plug ,and using the [function] FN key along with the f5 key will switch between the 2 screens,if there is any video

sounds like you need to hook it up to an external monitor to see if there is any video

did you try the "fixmbr" command at the repair prompt.

usually a laptop fan runs at bootup until the os loads and then shuts down until the temp goes up

to get at the fan in most laptops means complete removal of the top part of the laptop,i do not recommend you try this without a manual showing full instructions on how to do this

so if the specs of the ram are correct for you computer ,then you have to suspect its a bad stick of ram .

sounds like you need the power jack/socket resoldered to the motherboard,
had to take my friends A70 , to shop and have it resoldered

connect the dialup ,then go to start /run/type in CMD ,then type in ping www.google.com note the space between ping and www.
if it shows no packets lost then you are connected and problem is with ie6 ,type in www.google.com in ie6 address bar hit enter will it go to google ,if so search for and download firefox browser and try using it .

only boards[asus] i've seen with duel pci video card had a 2 sided[pins] chip the size of laptop memorey between the 2 pci slots and were clearly marked to swithch from 1 to 2 cards

sound like the cpu fan isn't working at all

i can't imaging a little fan on a video card sounding like a jet engine, i have a 10,000 rpm scsi harddrive drive that boots like one though ,i thing you may have a bad cpu fan though

Hey, maybe this is the wrong forum, but you people probably know way more than I do about this stuff. To the point. Windows XP, suddenly it begins to run slow. I try everything to fix it but nothing works. It's not connected to the internet but I download Norton 360 at school and install it on my computer. Against all odds, it finds spyware called spyware007.spy and "fixes" it. I turn off my computer and reboot but now when it powers up but nothing happens - it just turns off after about 5 seconds. HELP! Anyone know how to deal with this? Again, sorry if this is the wrong place to post this! Nick

hitting the f8 key on bootup go to safe mode and uninstall norton 360 and try booting windows again.
Also did you download norton from norton ,or cracked version from p2p

explore the games cd, right click on the .EXE file you need to click on the install the game and choose compatiability/then check use win98 mode ,then clcik on the exe file to install program ,after install you may need to do the same to the run exe for the game but not likely ,

maybe something wrong with the ram,did you try it alone or with anther stick of ram in the computer

I had forgotten about CWPUID, good program. I did try your link and couldn't get either or the programs to download from there. I was able to download it from Major Geeks.

When you mentioned Crucial you said that you would need to know what the motherboard is, that is only one to the two ways you can search there. You can also search by entering the make and model of your computer. You can also use a utility like SIW (System Information for Windows) to find out what you have for RAM, the capacity, and the number of expansion slots.

looks like a nice program ,will it actually tell the capacity of ram my board will take .never mind ,i downloaded it and ran it i guess it does,it says cap is 512 ,i assume it means per slot .as i have 768 installed in 2 slots

maybe you have onboard video sharing the ram ,and the amount of ram to use for video is set in the bios and maybe the bios got reset to defaults and the default amount setting was lower than a custom setting amount !!
Also maybe you have onboard shared video and you added a pci or agp video card ,tell us more !!

Ok so I have a Toshiba A105 s4284 that I just bought from a friend that bought it in january and it was working fine until just recently, all of a sudden the screen just goes completly black when I'm in the middle of something, I mean the computer doesn't shut off at all its just the screen. I've looked around on all the other forums trying to see if anyone else was having the same problem i was and I couldn't find anything. It doesn't just fade, it goes completly black, I've tried the fn + F5 key and that didnt work, I've jiggled the hinges to see if that was the problem and still nothing. When I shut the laptop it doesn't even go into stand by mode like it should its like the laptop froze. I've tried to run a virus scan on it and it gets to a certain number then the computer restarts or it goes black again. I'm good with computers but not that good so I have no idea as what to do, any help would be so much appreciated. Thanks in advance :)

have you tried hooking it to a external computer monitor and see if it goes black to .could be a bad .lcd

Ok for one I know that a "Program like this" could "damage my registry beyond repair". Secondly, I know how to deal with registry. Thirdly this Isn't registry this Is a startup list, not registry.

take it complete out of the tower completely and hook it all up just lying on a tabel top,[wood ] to eliminate any contact to the metal tower . you can jump the 2 psw pins with a screwdriver to start it as im sure you know allready.anyway worth a try,

Since this copy does everything a legal copy does, is it possible to just purchase a product key from a certified microsoft retailer or should go ad get a full version and reload it?

You could try a program caleed ccleaner it has a add and remove feature but im not sure if it works when the windows control panel is not functioning ..the ccleaner uninstall function is in the tools section ,ccleaner is a very safe program i use it all the time for about 2 yrs now .

hi ,i would go to my motherboard manufacturers site and get hard drive utility program ,[maxtors is called maxblast it will work with segate also..]most have them ,boot computer with it and format the drive ,then reload winxp

I guess it was a ram problem ,I swapped out the ram and now it works!!!!

you may/will need to reload windows because of the conflict with the old boards drivers ,
you maybe able to install over winxp by doing this ,put the winxp disk in the drive, boot to it ,when it asks do you want to install windows or do a repair ,say install, ,on the next screen choose the R for repair instead of enter to install ,this will trigger a overlay of winxp and install the new mother board drivers ,microsofts versions ,if this works ,you can then use the boards driver disk of the manufacturers web site to install there drivers .

I reread you post and if you put the old board and cpu back in and it works then you can uninstall the old boards chipset drivers and shut down and then change to the new and windows should load the new boards chipset drivers on boot up.

bottom line is, your winxp install doesnt recognize you new hardware !

Hell ,i a new mac owner and know very little as to fixing problems with it .
I bought a used I-mac G3 /OS 9.2 /400mhz/256 ram/dvd rom. heres the problem when i boot it up the message says ,sorry a system error occurred ,error type 114 ,then it says to reboot hold the shift key to disable extensions ,doing this the computer boots to the desktop but nothing works because all extensions are off ,how do i fix the system error !!
i do not have an OS disk .
my wife was playing some demo games and courageously looking around ,clicking on things in the tool bar along the bottom of the screen.
