its been my experience that you don't get as far as Invazn got if it was a SATA drive and you didn't hit f6 to install the drivers for it .
I would follow the instruction and try again !!

I found what I think is the RAM. From what I know I think it might by DDR. Clicky

I also found the Pentium 2 Processor. It was screwed into the motherboard. It wouldn't be too hard for me to remove it cleanly... i wouldn't have to remove all of the seperate parts, just unscrew it and keep it in a box somewhere.

screwed into the board??? cpu are plugged into the board ,

if the chip is backward compatible it should work and fit ,make sure you are putting it in the slot correctly, note the pins and the different amount of pins from the gap in the chip and how it is off center just a few pins ,this is the likely reason its not clipping in for you ,

to change a p2 to a p4 would require so many upgrades that you would have all the p2 parts on the floor, case included and a new p4 on the table.
giving that its a p2 i would venture a quess that the ram is SDRAM,either pc66 or pc100 .
my opinion as a retailer of used computers you are wasting your time with the p2 ,as i throw them in the dump all the time because there is NO demand for them, as there is not much left that they can do with to-days software .remember that the internet is run by todays newest software .

The auction said it was backwards compatible though its a noname brand. I had overlooked the part where it said it won't work on Intel based systems (I have a Pentium 4) as I didn't know processor brands were a factor in computability. Here's the RAM I purchased. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=ADME:L:LCA:US:31&item=150124299561

first it has nothing to do with the processor[p4]its you motherboard that it may not be compatible with , it wasn't compatible with the sellers board either.
Reading a little further in the ebay sale ,it says its not compatible with lintel based boards ,that is what your Compaq has in it.intel 845G chip set .

from ebay site
SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS

* System must be able to use 1GB DDR Modules
* System/board must not be an Intel based board, Asus board, or an Nvidia chipset
* Compatible with most AMD systems (check with manufacturer before bidding) including IBM, Microstar, Gigabyte, Abit, DFI, ECS, Biostar, PCCHIPS, EPOX, Chaintech, and more.

RueB, I get the feeling that you I are not talking about the same thing. What I'm referring to is the problem that occurs when you introduce a hdd to a different motherboard chip set. This usually will at best cause stability problems in the OS, it can also corrupt the OS to the point that it will need to be reinstalled.

Agree!
did you go to control panel ,admin tools ,event viewer /system ,and check for an errors

Hi Caperjack

I don have a winXP pro CD...
So how do i create 1? and what exactly is Boot-Disk.. does it ha somethin 2 do with BIOS ?

Thanks
Anand

no it does not have anything to do with the BIOS,it is for booting you computer when you have problems ,so you can troubleshoot the problem,or reinstall winxp, how to create one is another story .you can get files to make a 6 set of floppy boot disk for winxp pro at www.bootdisk.com

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

if you have the winxp pro cd ,then you have a boot disk ,as it is one!

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

it is piracy if the version installed on the laptop was an OEM copy (most likely) and therefore tied to the hardware.

i guess im a pirate then

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

yes, i know it may work but the reason it most likely bluescrened is that the dell cd will have installed the dell motherboard/chipset drivers, which will not be compatible with the proline machine and crash it.

i don't think in my case there are 2 dell disk ,one has the drivers

And im pretty sure that constitutes software piracy, so tread carefully.

maybe ,but i bought the laptop and the OS so its mine to use in my opinion.maybe not Bills .

Could I run applications using just the Program Files from another computer, without actually installing the program with a formal installer? Thing is, I recently had to reinstall Windows and all my applications, and am wondering what disadvantages there are to not installing the program and just using the Program Files transfered from another computer. Would all applications be able to run this way? What type of errors could I get? Basically, I just really want to be able to copy one big folder to a hard drive and have all the applications there, without having to go through so many installers. =)

simple answer is NO!

caperjack 875 I hate 20 Questions Team Colleague

Proline?

The reason it wont work is because Dell cd's only work on Dell machines.

just for the record ,i have a dell recovery cd ,for a dell 3400 or something like that [made a backup copy from a customers of mine ],i have used it to load winxp home on a clone computer I built ,the winxp key i used was from a old IBM laptop i had kicking around ,the person i sold the clone to is still using the computer ,no reported problems yet .
