Re: I've heard a lot of knowledgeable people say this, but I've never found a performance problem that can't solved by a combination of the ideas found here (There are many such pages). http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/setup/expert/northrup_restoreperf.mspx Check especially the autostart programs entry. Do you really need all those services running all the time?
Re: What is it you're trying to do? I wouldn't expect a reboot with a system disk inserted. You should get something like, "Press any key to boot from CD".
Re: There's a series of suggestions here: http://pcsupport.about.com/od/findbyerrormessage/a/missinghaldll.htm Why did you reformat? This is important. I'd seriously consider a reinstall, but start with #4 if you want to try to fix this.
Re: Have you installed the drivers?
Re: I'm not sure what you're asking, but this is almost certainly the wrong forum. You're right about bandwidth and upload, but that's easy. You may need a web designer and/or database services, so post this in web design.
Re: I would try using the recovery CD first. Are you changing the motherboard or just the CPU? If that fails, your next choice is a new copy of XP, or switch to Linux.
Re: Take a look at this page, especially the "Top 10 Vista Hacks": http://www.computerworld.com/action/article.do?command=viewArticleBasic&articleId=9004871 They aren't really hacks, just ways to tweak the system so it's more responsive. There's a lot of other Vista info here as well. Mostly, though, spend some time learning the differences between Vista and XP. Vista's …
Re: Have you tried chkdsk /f? In a run box, type the command followed by the drive letter: chkdsk /f d: for example.
Re: In addition: Does anything appear on the monitor? Have you checked the monitor connections?
Re: Run Ipconfig /all for the XP machine and post the result. Start/Run cmd ipconfig /all Access the router web page at 192.168.1.1 and verify that the XP machine is connected.
Re: You will find this MS KB article very helpful in editing boot.ini: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/289022
Re: As far as I know, you can't install AVG in safe mode-some services cannot start. Did you do a full format on the correct partition? I agree with you-this should not be a problem with RAM or MOBO. I've installed with missing files before, and it might be worth trying.
Re: What's the make and model of your computer? Most manufacturers offer all these drivers at their sites. If you get the ethernet driver first, you'll be able to connect and download the rest directly to your PC.
Re: Take a look at Control Panel/AdminTools/Event viewer for System or App errors that occur at the time of the reboot and tell us what shows up. Did you really replace the HD, or just the DVD?
Re: Take a look in Event Viewer. Control Panel/AdminTools/Event viewer Look under System and Application for red entries. These can be cryptic, but are often helpful.
Re: It sounds as thought he Dell Tech was trying a reinstall instead of a repair install and you're out of luck. It would be nice to know what the error was. I'd go ahead with the reinstall, which is pretty straightforward. You could do this without their help. You may …
Re: Paste the following in your address bar and see if you get the site: http://208.101.6.106/
Re: Given that you've checked everything, I think you're right: the HD is dead or non-bootable. Does it spin up? You can probably tell by touching it as you boot. If you know how to transfer this drive to another computer, it's worth trying, but it's far easier to get a …
Re: The beep codes have meaning, so please tell us the exact sequence of longs and/or shorts. Some beep codes are listed here: http://www.computerhope.com/beep.htm "while keep on for a whole night it can even distroy your electronic circuits in side..." I didn't know that. My computers stay on for weeks at …
Re: Recovery console does what you tell it to, so don't use the "Format" command and you'll be OK. You may be better off using system Restore or some other procedure, so tell us more about the problem.
Re: What is "Leaf"? Does either computer connect by itself? What kind of connection do you have? ICS is tricky-you'd be much better off with a router, and they're cheap enough nowadays.
Re: If you have an XP CD you could try the Recovery console-Fixboot or Fixmbr may help. Otherwise you could try a repair install. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314058 http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm
Re: Is the proper printer selected in the File/Print dialog? Can you uninstall the printer? Do so, if possible, then reinstall it. Use safe mode if necessary to remove the printer.
Re: So, where are the moderators? Rules: Keep It Legal Keep it clean and do not post pornographic material or link to it. In addition, do not post anything warez related or related to other illegal acts. This includes tech support troubleshooting pirated software or P2P programs (i.e. Gnutella, Kazaa) used …
Re: You don't need ICS with a router. Read bobbyraws's post about Control Panel and follow his directions, which will solve the problem, or at least give us the info we need to help.
Re: It looks as though you've got the right drivers (Soft ModemAMR). How did you go about the install, and what were the results, especially error messages? I see the driver file has a setup.exe-did you use that?
Re: What OS do you have now? Is this spyware affecting you in some way? I fond no reference to this file in Google, which maks me think it's not a big deal, or you've given a wrong file name. Not all computers will run Vista, and those that will may …
Re: What was the issue, and how did you fix it? This sounds like a spyware/virus issue-do you have updated programs, and have you run a complete scan?
Re: I think you mean "cycling". I have this image of a computer going 'round in circles like a dog lying down. This sort of thing could have several causes, like heat, power supply memory, etc, so give us more info.
Re: This may help, but sometimes there's no helping the helpless. Create a new account (Danette1?). Move the relevant files in C:/Docs and settings/Danette to Danette1. Alternatively, just create the new account and re-create the settings.
Re: The difference seems to be that the cold boot loads the SATA drivers and the warm boot does not. What is the boot order in your BIOS?
Re: What's in boot.ini? That seems like an awfully time-consuming method to check for a virus. Did you try Safe Mode or System Restore? How about a repair install?
Re: Try a System restore from DOS. Starting System Restore Tool from Command Prompt: 1. Start your computer to Safe Mode with Command Prompt. Re: Have you installed the ethernet drivers? What do you see in Device Manager? I find it ironic that you're in English class.
Re: You really need to see this error message. In the past, I have done this by holding my finger over the "pause" key and pressing it quickly when the message appears. If it's really quick, you need to anticipate its appearance. This will work if you're patient enough. If you …
Re: What does the screen say? Have you tried booting from the install CD? System restore or a repair install may help.
Re: A very interesting question. You may be able to set up a DOS/XP network. See here: http://www.duxcw.com/faq/network/dosclient.htm and here: http://www.duxcw.com/faq/network/dosclient.htm
Re: That's a Norton System Works file. My guess is the program hasn't been installed properly since the System restore. Try re-installing it. I really don't like System Works at all, so my second suggestion is to just uninstall it and Use AVG Free. You may need the Norton removal tool …
Re: I signed up with Project Honey Pot, which sends me a weekly monitor report. http://www.projecthoneypot.org/
Re: Have you tried system restore? I'd consider a repair install also. Love that Smitfraud fix-it worked wonders on a friend's PC.
Re: Set up a network (Network setup Wizard). Be sure to enable file and printer sharing on both. On the laptop, use the Add Printer wizard to set up a network printer.
Re: Is this printer connected to a computer? If so, you must enable file and printer sharing on that machine and the laptop. Use the "Add printer" dialog to add a networked printer. If it's not connected to a computer, you'll need some kind of wireless print server.
Re: This sounds like some kind of spyware scam. A link to "update my registry" is very suspicious. Try booting on Safe mode. System Restore may help, and a Hijack this log file may be in order.
Re: Insert the XP disk and try the repair option. Details are here: http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm Are you getting any Beep codes or error messages?
Re: I'm not sure what you're seeing-Does the image fill the entire screen, or is there a border between the image and the screen? Have you checked to see if the video driver is installed? Have you looked for an uodated driver?
Re: It sounds as though the Hard drive is not being found. This could be due to a failure, a loose connection, or a bad boot setting. (In the BIOS, make sure it's set to boot from the HD). In some laptops, this is a fairly easy repair-just open the HD …
Re: See here for several possible solutions: http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000465.htm I suspect you're not actually booting from the CD, or the CD is damaged. |
The End.
